So, we all know it's coming. Contentions over rumors and speculation aside, the idea of a crossover Mario Kart has been dreamt of for decades, and the simple notion that it may soon come to pass is tantalizing to the imagination.

The first question that comes to anyone's mind is simple: what characters would be playable in such a game? I've spent an embarrassing chunk of time drafting three distinct responses to this prompt, which has made me curious about what the community thinks.

You can go big, be realistic, or anything in between. I'll share my "realistic" approach after we get a couple responses. Think it over for a bit if you'd like; this can be more challenging to balance than you'd think.

What I want most from a Switch-era Mario Kart would be additions of new Switch-era characters.

  • Spring Man and Min-Min
  • Byleth M and Byleth F
  • Rabbids from Mario + Rabbids (seriously just let them in, they're hilarious)
  • Rex (Pyra and Mythra are busy in Smash)
  • Kirby, of course, since he's a Nintendo staple

Okay scratch all that, I just want to see my boy Rex having a blast in a go kart.

I am going to predict Cappy as a racer. He won't be in the driver seat. Instead, he possesses whatever vehicle you select.

I'm going to get a couple excel sheets going and work on this tomorrow while I should actually be working.

I’d love if the roster was basically a copy and paste with Smash Bros Ultimate. Like I’d love to race as Shulk and have him say “I’M REALLY FEELING IT!!” every time he does a trick.

I do think if it happens though, they don’t tend to add that many characters so even just hitting the Smash 64 lineup, Kirby, Samus, Fox, Pikachu, Captain Falcon, etc. (maybe Marth too) that’d be enough to make me happy for the first one. I’m excited to see the tracks for the currently unrepped series like a Kirby track or a Metroid track. By the second Nintendo Kart, then you can hit your deeper cuts like Shulk or whatever.

The real question is how much of the roster will be from non-Mario franchises? I'm assuming they'll still keep at least 50% Mario characters.

I just looked it up and was surprised read that Mario Kart 8 had 42 characters - Way more than I remembered! If you get rid of the Koopalings, that's a lot of space for new characters. I typically use medium size characters, so hopefully they don't make Samus too big!

I've seen the idea of "Smash Kart" thrown around a lot over the years, and I don't really like it. There can be some characters from other Nintendo IPs (I feel MK8D already strikes an ideal balance in this regard), but it would be a shame if the series lost part of its identity by going all in on crossovers.

The problem with the roster in Mario Kart 8 is that there were a lot of filler characters when there is still a lot of potential with other characters from the Mario universe.

alright everybody, here's my least-outlandish roster idea, attractively organized in 8 rows of 7
This is what I'm thinking will happen. Mostly Mario characters, with a good mix of main characters from Nintendo's biggest franchises. I don't think we'll see a crazy Smash Ultimate style roster. DLC packs will probably happen, but new characters won't hold the same weight as a Smash fighter reveal.

Here's my dream roster:

Mario
Luigi
Captain Falcon
Dr. Stewart
Pico
Samurai Goroh
Jody Summer
Mighty Gazelle
Baba
Octoman
Dr. Clash
Mr. EAD
Bio Rex
Billy
Silver Neelsen
Gomar & Shioh
John Tanaka
Mrs. Arrow
Blood Falcon
Jack Levin
James McCloud
Zoda
Michael Chain
Super Arrow
Kate Alen
Roger Buster
Leon
Draq
Beastman
Antonio Guster
Black Shadow
The Skull

I wonder if a new F-ZERO (lmao) would feature Mr. EPD
That would be an amazing easter egg. He is an android overall, so a revision would make sense. F-Zero has such a massive, hilarious roster of characters with incredible potential. Too bad we'll never see it expanded on.

I'm not super interested in the idea of Nintendo Kart; i'd much prefer to see the roster lean into more wild/obscure Mario picks like Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled did for that series.

Before getting into newcomers, though, I really do believe they may as well pull a Smash Ultimate and bring back everyone from the prior nine main series installments. Between 8 Deluxe and Tour you have usable assets for all but five unique racers (Paratroopa, Petey Piranha, R.O.B., Honey Queen and Wiggler); and at least one of those is on the way to Tour (probably all of them at this rate). So that's the roster starting at 55 racers:

H41pxo5.png

Of course, Tour is filled to the brim with alternate costumes of existing characters; and i'd want that to remain true here too. Some of those alternate forms are technically considered unique characters in that game, like Captain Toad, Ice Mario and Meowser; but for conveinence here only the Baby, Metal and Dry variety of clone get to keep their unique spot (unique weight class / stats and all that); all the others are folded into the base character. That's where Tanooki Mario, Cat Peach and Gold Mario are hanging out now too.

Alright, time for newcomers. I've got a lot of ideas, and not all of them will make it in, but i'll talk about them anyway.
  • Odyssey Newbies: Cappy, Tiara, Madame Broode, Topper, Hariet, Rango and Spewart
    • Still the newest 3D Mario title, so hey, why not include the cap siblings and Broodals. None of them have made a spin-off apperance yet, but it has to happen eventually... right?
  • Mainline Leftovers: Boom Boom, Pom Pom, Toadsworth, Lubba, Sprixie Princess, Mashiko & Yamamura
    • Major named characters from prior mainline Mario games that were passed over during their time of relevance. Sunshine, Galaxy 2, 3D World and Maker especially don't really get much of anything in spin-offs, so this is their moment. Could've picked the helper character from Maker 2 instead, Nina, but I think Mashiko (or Mary O. for you yanks) is more popular.
  • Friendly Faces: Luma, Penguin, Pianta, Tostarenan, Glydon
    • I'd like to see a few NPC series from across the 3D Mario games. I'm sure Toad is getting pretty lonely carrying this class of Mario character on their own.
  • Side-Series Bonanza: Poochy, E. Gadd, Hellen Gravely, Captain Syrup, Jimmy T., Mona, Cranky Kong, King K. Rool, Foreman Spike
    • It's about time that Yoshi, Luigi, Wario and Donkey Kong get to invite some friends (and foes) from their own series. Most are fairly self-explainatory; Poochy's been in mainline Mario now thanks to Odyssey, E. Gadd has been long overdue since he was cut from DS, K. Rool made his big return in Smash, Foreman Spike is going to appear in the Mario movie, etc. Limited the WarioWare picks to the two I felt make the most sense (even if Ashley is more popular).
  • Extra Enemies: Goomba, Ninji, Spike, Chargin' Chuck, Virus
    • Mario spin-off rosters aren't complete without some miscallaneous mooks to liven things up. Goomba doesn't have arms, but that didn't stop them from playing baseball and participating in a Mario Party!
  • Crappy Babies: Baby Donkey Kong, Baby Wario, Baby Yoshi
    • Gotta throw in some bad with the good, so here, three more babies. At least this time they're all from existing games? Horray?
  • Guests: Zelda, Kirby, Captain Falcon, Octoling, Min Min, Twintelle
    • I may not want Nintendo Kart, but i'm fine with a few more guests joining the fun. Zelda and Octoling to give their series a second racer; Min Min and Twintelle because EPD 9 deserve the opportunity to self-indulge a little; and Kirby and Captain Falcon because they're by far the two most popular requests for crossover drivers (also I like 'em). You could make an arguement for Fox and Olimar being a good fit within the Mario cast, better than the Zelda cast or Captain Falcon, but oh well.
it'd certainly be impossible for them to include that many characters (96! an unbelivable number), but I sorted them all into an even grid anyway because that's just how I am.

UHkCiVs.png

But wait! You may have noticed the extra row near the bottom! Well, those are characters (mostly from RPGs) that I want to shout-out as personal picks but would most definitely be off-limits for the Mario Kart team to actually include. Mallow and Geno are owned by Square Enix; older Paper Mario aren't referenced often anymore; Mario & Luigi doesn't have a future with AlphaDream gone; Wart and Tatanga are one-and-done retired villains; Wanda's game didn't even release outside of Japan; and Camelot's human OCs have been erased from existance.

Alright i'm done now.

I definitely carry a significant bias: I don't think Mario, its characters, or its locations are especially interesting.

While I don't think Mario Kart ought to die in the long term, doing "Nintendo Kart" would be an interesting way to distinguish the game from 8, especially if they end up sharing a platform.

Yeah, but consider this.

Mario characters are goofy-looking and I like them. Also I think the next Mario Kart will end up being a Switch 2 title (at best cross-gen), so in my mind it'll only be sharing a platform with 8 Deluxe in the same way Wii shared a platform with Double Dash.

I wonder if a new F-ZERO (lmao) would feature Mr. EPD
It'd ruin part of the gag!

I really hope the idea of Nintendo Kart is just a fan made concoction. I'm not averse to a guest character and course here and there (MK8 got the balance spot on), but not every party game needs to be a full on crossover.

Just remove the babies and duplicate metal/bone/cat versions of characters and throw on other Mario Universe characters they haven't used before, or haven't used for a while.

I suppose that's fair. Like everything these days it depends on what you expect to happen with hardware. I'm not expecting a Switch 2 until 2026, and that'd be a bit longer than I'd expect

It'd ruin part of the gag!
this is why they won't make a new F-ZERO

If they did this they would stick mostly to the cartoonier characters imo. Kirby, Pikachu, Olimar, etc. Though you gotta have Samus and Captain Falcon obviously

Wwwwwwwwwwwwwwhhhhh

Dry Bones is absolutely one of the best Mario Party characters in history and deserves a honorary spot in Kart as a result. You take that back.

Hah, was mainly thinking of Dry Bowser, forgot about Bones. I'll give Bones the benefit of the doubt, they can stay

Personally, I think Nintendo Kart makes less sense. Mario characters fit the aesthetic better, some others Nintendo characters would feel out of place.

I'd rather they stick with Mario characters, but give us some deep cuts and add costumes (and don't treat them as separate characters).

They should add some characters like a Pianta, Beanish, Pauline, Cranky, Dixie, Mario Odyssey characters etc.

I'd want a "Mascot Kart" rather than a Nintendo Kart. All publishers but absolutely no creepy realistic human characters. No Anime ones either.

Nintendo: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Toad, Bowser, Bowser Jr, DK, Diddy, Dixie, Funky, Tiny, K Rool, Wario, Syrup, Mona, Jimmy T, Yoshi, Kamek, Link (chibi), Tetra, Linebeck, Tingle, Kirby, Dedede, Waddle Dee, Chibi-Robo, Starfy, Isabelle, KK, Nook.

Square: Chocobo, Moogle, Vivi, White Mage, Frog, Slime, Platypunk
Capcom: Megaman, Bass, Tron, Arthur, Amaterasu
Namco: Pac-man, Klonoa, Mappy, Taizo, Susumu
Hudson: Bomberman, Bonk, Master Higgins
Sega: Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Billy Hatcher, AiAi, Samba de Amigo
Konami: Frogger, Goemon, TwinBee

Rare DLC pack: Banjo, Tiptup, Timber, Pipsy, Drumstick, Conker

I’d rather it be Smash-lite in its approach at most. What they started with 8/DX was fun - just a few main characters from Nintendo’s top franchises.

But overall, keep it focused on Mario. There’s tons of potential for exciting characters and levels in that universe.

Counterpoint: I cannot imagine a "mascot kart" without Captain Falcon, or Zelda representation without Yakuza.

I think the ratio we have now in MK8D is perfect - 1/6 of the roster is guests, the rest is all Mario. I'm not really interested in turning Mario Kart into Smash Kart or Nintendo Kart or anything of the sort, because...
I definitely carry a significant bias: I don't think Mario, its characters, or its locations are especially interesting.

While I don't think Mario Kart ought to die in the long term, doing "Nintendo Kart" would be an interesting way to distinguish the game from 8, especially if they end up sharing a platform.
...Mario Kart's locales are interesting to me because they're Mario but also not completely played straight Mario. It's not "let's take a specific location from a specific game and just...put it in the kart racer" most of the time and that's super cool. It's doesn't always work, you get the occasional Ice Ice Outpost, but you got so many iconic new locales that feel expansive on Mario's world. Just from 8 Deluxe, you got places like Sweet Sweet Canyon, Thwomp Ruins, Toad Harbor, pretty much all of the Star Cup, Cloudtop Cruise, Wild Woods, Super Bell Subway. And we can't forget older games giving us Coconut Mall, Daisy Cruiser, DK Mountain, Baby Park, the different Moo Moo farm courses, Neo Bowser City, Koopa Cape, Mushroom Bridge, Sherbet Land, the list goes on. I get not finding that appealing, but I like the whimsical expansions of the Mario world. And with having the courses be majority Mario instead of having to do courses that need to represent their franchise, we can get that depth - I fear focusing too much on crossover elements wouldn't result in bad course design, but nothing that's as out there. This isn't a popular opinion, but the Zelda track is one of my least favorite, I don't like the Excitebike course (it's faithful, I get it, but I want turns), and the Animal Crossing course is extremely cute but not one I rush to play again. On the other hand, both F-Zero courses were excellent, so perhaps they just need to go bolder with the course designs for the crossovers?

That being said, the kind of crossover we have now? That works for me. I'm going to try and keep that while also increasing the roster size.

I'm gonna go with the Raccoon approach - realistic roster, which is what I see happening, and dream roster, which is pie in the sky hopes.

The character rosters between MKWii and MK8 did not grow much - From 26 to 30. However, MK8's DLC, plus the Deluxe additions, helped to bolster what was initially seen as a weak roster, bringing our total to 42. Let's go with an increase to 54 - nothing wild, but not a bad boost, and could be increased with DLC.

If I'm here to predict characters, I say most, if not all of MK8D's cast stays. The Koopalings stay. The babies stay. The metal forms stay. Maybe the power up forms for DLC get cut? I can just as likely see them keeping them, another way to play as the most popular characters with slightly different stats. Yes, Tanooki Mario and Mario have different stats, I don't make up the rules.

Mario Kart Tour gives us a few insights into who can be added. Pauline, Nabbit, Dixie Kong, Kamek, Hammer Bros., King Bob-omb, even Peachette and Monty Mole, all great additions to the roster. You even got the return of Funky Kong, Birdo and Diddy Kong, the only three characters from MKWii not in 8. You could stop there and call it a day, even. The roster could go wilder, but man, that's already 11 characters. I think if you cut one, you cut Monty Mole, since it's a stage hazard in other courses.

So okay, already at 52 characters. Let's finish off with the guests. The Miis stay, and the returning guests would be updated to match more recent designs. The two villagers and Isabelle will get New Horizons designs, the Inklings will take their looks from Splatoon 3, and Link will default to his BotW/2 look (and will also use the BotW VA now). They'll each have updated alternate costumes too - more diverse Villagers, more Splatoon 3 looks, and alternate tunics for Link. New to the party is BotW Zelda, sporting her look from the sequel, and Min Min, complete with an ARMS-themed battle mode stage. Future DLC can add more guest stages and courses, along with some surprise Mario characters, but nothing from outside the main Mario series or EPD. No Xenoblade, no Fire Emblem, and, tragically, no Kirby.

Take or leave a few characters, I see something along those lines happening. But if I were calling the shots...

Alright, let's have some fun. I originally made a hypothetical roster, but I think it'd be much simpler to just list a bunch of characters I think would be cool to see in Mario Kart, no hard number attached and no attempt at realism. To save time I won't mention characters already in either MK8D or Tour, just throw all of them in within reason and fold what you can into costumes. Just newcomers and missing characters here, and way more Nintendo characters than I'd usually ask for. Here goes:
  • Cappy
  • Tiara
  • Pianta
  • Noki
  • Lubba
  • Boom Boom
  • Pom Pom
  • Sprixie Princesses (all of them share a slot)
  • Paratroopa
  • Wiggler
  • Petey Piranha
  • Madame Brood
  • Topper
  • Harriet
  • Spewart
  • Rango
  • Tostarenan
  • Lochlady
  • Shiverian
  • Oyaneko (the parent cat from Bowser's Fury, because it would be hilarious to see it driving a car)
  • Foreman Spike (he IS in the movie...)
  • Spike
  • Chargin' Chuck
  • Cranky Kong
  • King K. Rool
  • Captain Syrup
  • Jimmy T.
  • Mona
  • Dribble
  • Spitz
  • 9-Volt
  • 18-Volt
  • 5-Volt
  • Kat
  • Ana
  • Penny
  • Ashley
  • E. Gadd
  • Hellen Gravely
  • Gooigi
  • Lammy Koopa
  • Goombella
  • Vivian
  • Wart
  • Zelda
  • Toon Link
  • Tetra
  • Samus
  • Pit
  • Captain Falcon
  • Kirby
  • King Dedede
  • Olimar
  • Octoling (girl and boy)
  • Min Min
  • Twintelle
  • R.O.B.
  • Pac-Man (hey, wouldn't be his first Mario Kart)
  • Blinky (Bring him back, too. Have all the ghosts as costumes, why not.)
  • Ms. Pac-Man (may she one day be free from rights hell)
Can you tell that I like WarioWare? Add in tons of costumes on top of these and you're golden.

Honestly, @MondoMega killed it with their list of 96, as you can see by the number of picks we share. Give or take a few characters, I'd be highly singing the praises of their roster. We'll probably never get a roster like that, but I can imagine.

I would love all the cartoon IP. Mario, Kirby, Pokémon, Animal Crossing...

But not stuff like Metroid, Fire Emblem or Xenoblade. They would look weird in karts, I don't like that in the Sega game

Next installment will be Mario Kart Superstars.

It will contain the 5 most popular tracks from the N64 and Gamecube games and the original 8 characters from Super Mario Kart.

I would stick to the most popular Nintendo characters right now:

Samus, Pikachu, Kirby, Fox, Captain Falcon

Bonus character: Piranha Plant

0
Mario & Luigi Kart only featuring characters from the Mario & Luigi RPGs (so we can still get the baby characters from Parters in Time) and a soundtrack by Yoko Shimomura.

I agree with the keep it simples. I’d love tours current roster plus some additional extended universe characters (Mona/ E Gadd/ King K Rool for sure) and then the crossovers:

excluding the ones we already have Id love to see:

Kirby
Captain Falcon
Samus
Fox

I’d also love to see Banjo Kazooie, Sonic and Megaman and think they’d suit the game well. But honestly that’s probably it.

Also Pokemon Kart when?

I intentionally limited myself on WarioWare characters but i'd love to have even more of that cast! Thought about Noki and the Big Cat from Bowser's Fury too (plus a few Galaxy NPC series like Star Bunny, Gearmo and Whittle) but I really wanted that clean grid!

Agree with you on Mario Kart's track design for sure; there's absolutely a unique charm to them that would be lost when accounting for a grander crossover. Mario Kart was never focused on recreating iconic locations from other games as race tracks, but what's what people want Nintendo Kart to be.

whatever they do, I'm hopimg they continue to omit Diddy Kong. Please bring back Jr instead, and add Baby Donkey Kong if you must.

If they did a "Nintendo Kart" I would guess that they would have a small-ish roster (not tiny, but comparable to MK8DX) and then use DLC to fill out the rest. That could be a huge hype/sales juggernaut for them like Smash was and it could dominate the news cycle every time a new character/track got revealed.

Min Min has to be in in.

Don't even give her a kart, she equips tire arms and rolls around the place on them.

I want Fire Emblem Kart, but only the sword users. And they’re riding their swords.

I still dislike the fact that Double Dash had a character outside of Mario Universe (Diddy) and this is one the things that I strong dislike in 8/8 Deluxe.

So I hope that they put only Mario characters in the new game (and that the new Smash only have Nintendo characters as well).

Yet you’re fine with Funky in Wii

I always assumed Kongs are part of the Marioverse.

I would rather the series stay Mario Kart with some guest appearances that fit. Villager? Fits. Inkling Girl? Fits.

Link? No. He sticks out.

However, Toon Link would fit and that should have been the one they used.

If they do Nintendo Kart.... Pyra and Mithra :devilish:

The next Mario Kart will have a faction based story with the organics facing off against their metal selves (led by Metal Mario and Pink Gold Peach).

This is basically how I feel. Add on a few new “mascots” like Samus & Kirby (along with Link, Inlinkgs, and Isabelle from 8DX) but keep it mostly Mario focused for the rest of the cast/locations.
