If you're interested in some arcade racing goodness, NFS Hot Pursuit Remastered and Burnout Paradise Remastered are both fantastic games, and you can grab both for a combined $21, which is a steal.

I couldn‘t resist buying some more digital Switch games, all of them discounted due to the European eShop sale:
— Into the Breach
— Fell Seal
— Wuppo (if I remember correctly, a Famiboards member once recommended it, and it did only cost 1.99 €)
— WHAT THE GOLF?

Looking forward to playing them! Isn‘t it incredible how many great games there are on Switch!?
That was most likely me. I hope you enjoy Wuppo!

I'm living in the past right now. I bought a bunch of 3DS rpgs during the Sega/Atlus sale and also discovered that I never got around to buying Picross e8 (I see it came out after the Switch released, which explains why), so I grabbed that too. I just started SMT Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers and have been chipping away at Picross e8 here and there. It's been fun! I love the Switch, but the 3DS is still pretty awesome.

Into the Breach is amazing, is almost like chess with mechs and aliens. Gameplay is a master class in tactic games and the port is just perfect.

Just finished my playthrough of Spiritfarer with 100% requests finished. For the most part, I really liked it. It's a sad, but hopeful game. There were some QoL things I took issue with which could have streamlined certain aspects of the game, but overall I think they did a good job of making everything work. Really great and emotional soundtrack, wonderful characters, and great character art and animations too. I liked how the characters were all fairly different personality wise, and I can definitely see people having different favorites. I definitely need to follow this up with a "lighter" game though lol

Any idea how either of these two perform? I hear Cross Code is a stable 60 docked.

And thank you for the new thread friends!
Just wanted to add on to what others said, I started Huntdown tonight, seems good...switchup also had a review last year if you wanna check out. I'm playing the physical I bought it last month from Amazon.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts I would like to start it up next month. I bought it physical...I know it's the eshop thread but sometimes for indies I wait for the physical if i figure it's gonna have one. I waited a while for Huntdown and a little while for Spiritfarer.

How long did it take you to 100%? I think I saw just beating the game regularly it's around 20 hours.

My Switch time says about 35 hours. I would say you can definitely get to the credits a lot sooner, but that would likely involve missing/avoiding some of the spirits and their requests. One thing that makes 100% completion more annoying is that you can't see your collection (fish you've caught, dishes you've made) without going to a particular island. There were a few recipes I had gotten that I hadn't actually cooked, so I didn't realize that I had missed those (I ended up just taking screenshots of the collection screen). To be honest though, I don't know whether that counts towards your % completion, I just did it anyway. The way the game phrases it is "requests completed," so it may just be spirit (and other NPC) requests.

Another thing that probably would have saved some time is realizing sooner that you can have duplicates of some of the buildings (field, garden, orchard, etc). A lot of building improvements and requests require specific items, so there's a lot of gathering and growing you have to do lol. Some of the crafting stuff is a little slow too.

Ok that's good to know...these are the buildings on your boat, right? I'm not gonna go for 100% but I don't want to miss spirits and I'll feel bad if I didn't fulfill all of their requests...haha

Yeah, so on your boat you have a grid, and you can only place buildings on the grid (they stack on top of each other). As you progress in the game, you can make your boat larger (the last two upgrades were totally unnecessary for me) to accommodate more buildings. All the spirits will have you build a specific house for them, and you can "improve" the houses with minor additions like plants, pictures, or whatever, depends on the spirit. Sometimes the improvements are optional, sometimes they'll ask you to add them. Usually once you finish up all the requests a spirit has, they'll ask you to take them to the Everdoor and they'll move on. The thing is, once they move on, their homes will still stay on the boat, so there is a bit of management involved in terms of space when you start out.

Into the Breach especially is one of the best strategy games in recent years. I love it, it’s fresh and distills a lot of ideas down into key decisions, making you accomplish the most you can with your limited assets by manipulating enemy movement and the environment as well as your own units.

I was so close to buying these on Switch, then Forza Horizon 5 came to Game Pass and took the wind out of their sails.

You're in for a treat with Into the Breach. It's one of my all time favorite games. I put so many hours into the Switch version!

Just bought The Last Campfire for $3.5 (it's $4.5 without coins). Looks like my kind of game. Time to fire the old Lite up again :)

What is the game like? I know it's considered a roguelite of some kind but I have a hard time getting a feel for the game based on impressions and I kind of want to pick it up.

It’s only a ‘rogue’ game in the sense that your losses carry over. The mechs are engaged in trying to save humanity from an invasion. The ‘rogue’ conceit is that when you fail a mission, you abandon that timeline, and shift sideways to another, taking a bit of experience with you.

In terms of gameplay, you have a team of 3 mechs on a grid, with lots of enemies and terrain tiles. Those mechs can move and attack, but you have varied objectives and need to utilise some of the secondary effects, like knocking one enemy into another to damage them both in addition to the weapon damage. Or moving both yours and the enemy troops to block holes enemy reinforcements will come out of. Or pushing the enemy to take damage from a terrain effect. Or pushing the enemy into the path of an enemy attack that is charging up with a one-turn countdown. You have all the info of what is coming up next, so every mistake is your own. It’s all about doing the most you can with a limited number of units, but the careful game design and limitations mean it’s closer to chess than any other SRPG I’ve played. There’s still room for manoeuvre, but it does leave you feeling pretty smart when you take a large enemy force apart, using them against each other.

It's a turn-based strategy game where you control a team of 3 mechs who are protecting the world from a Kaiju invasion.

It's a run based game and you have to restart if you die. Your mechs are upgraded throughout a run, but you don't carry upgrades over on subsequent runs like other rogue-likes. It's not one of those games where you eventually brute force your way through because your character levels up. You can win on your first try if you know how to play.

The highlight of the game for me is how each enemy projects it's next intended action, so you can take all the time in the world to plan your ideal moves. Sometimes the best strategy is to allow an enemy to hit your own mech instead of a civilian building. And some attacks physically move enemies on the map, which can force them to attack their own team or miss their intended target on their next turn. Placement is key.

A full run includes 4 continents (~6 stages each) and a final level to beat the game. You can go straight to the final level after clearing 2 continents, but you can choose to complete all 4 if you think the reward (more potential upgrades) is worth the risk (more battles).

There are 24 mechs to choose from, so it's very replayable.

It all sounds very complicated, but I find it to be incredibly intuitive and engaging. I typically don't like overly complex tactics games. Into the Breach finds a perfect balance IMO.

Sorry for the wall of text but I love this game so much.

I fondly remember shadow man but I imagine it's janky as hell these days even if it has new levels.
I'm eagerly waiting for it. One of my all-time favorite games on the N64.

Already got it on PC, but playing it portable and on the TV beats that for me.

I just want to add something here. If upgrades carry over, it's a rogue-lite. If they don't, it's rogue-like. The difference betweet like/lite is that lite is usually seen as easier in the sense that you can upgrade your character in a perma-way.

Thanks for the clarification. I didn't realize there was a clear defining difference, since the terms get thrown around all the time.

There are 3 main things that you can know if a game is a roguelike.

A roguelike has:
  • true permadeath (die once and you need to start again from 0)
  • turn based movement
  • procedural maps

But there are more that were defined in the International Roguelike Development Conference 2008

A brand new Free to play game just came to the eShop. It is a twin stick shooter of sorts. Feels a little blah, but it is free so it is just a manner of how much time you have to give.

I was excited to download the Melty Blood DLC yesterday, but even though the patch is live so you can see the two new characters on the select screen, the listing on the eshop is not so you can’t claim them. The official site says they were delayed and will be up Monday and from what I read both characters are free now? So that’s cool.

While I was on, I did buy my first game of 2022 finally, Picross S7! It’s more Picross and that’s fine with me!

Reverie Knights Tactics - I don't know anything about it, but I like the general look.

Vagante - has very positive reviews on Steam and looks like an interesting roguelike. Reviews mention similarities to Spelunky, but with more of a combat focus. Also features 4 player co-op. Could be a nice hidden gem.

COGEN: Sword of Rewind - Looks like a Megaman / Gunvolt type game. Has a demo that might be worth checking out if that's your thing. (Seems to have some DLC tie in with Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX 2 which releases the same day)

After SRIV and RFR I wonder if we’ll see fire sales on any other THQ ports. There’s a couple I’d buy at that price

Just finished it today. Loved it. Probably my GOTY for Switch after Metroid and maybe 3D World.

I bought the Last Campfire for $5. Looks like a good, short game.
I'm looking forward to your impressions - I'm especially interested to hear if the puzzles are too repetitive or not challenging in Last Campfire. I've feel like I've read dissenting opinions about that.

I picked up Ai: The Somnium Files on this most recent sale - about six and a half hours in and I’m really enjoying it. I’m not a big visual novel guy but something about these Spike Chunsoft murder game / detective / twisty ones pushes the right buttons. It has the flowchart mechanic where you can go back to pivotal moments in the story and make different decisions to send the story off in different directions (and you have to to solve more of the mystery and get to the final ending).

I tried Last Campfire on Apple Arcade, and this is exactly how I felt about it. There was too much uninteresting story, and the puzzles didn't challenge me in a meaningful way. I dropped it quite early though, so maybe it get's better.

Thanks juuso! I think I'm going to wait till it eventually hits Game Pass then. Seems unlikely I would feel differently from you.

Just finished Cthulhu Saves Christmas last night (I know, a little late on the seasonal appropriateness). I always enjoy Zeboyd Games' short-length RPGs, and this wasn't an exception. It's a prequel to Cthulhu Saves the World, which I'm sure a lot of people have from PC bundles at this point. Picked it up for $2 a few sales ago, so hard to go wrong for that much.

It seems pretty short, looks like I’m about 1/3 done already. I like it though. There has been one fairly tough puzzle and the rest have been on the easy side, but still fun. It kind of reminds me of the puzzles in Captain Toad. The game looks cute and is pretty chill. I’m enjoying it for the $5 I spent.
