Pre-Release Luigi's Mansion 2 HD — Pre-release Discussion Thread (UPDATE: "A rude awakening" trailer, see threadmarks)

I'm not surprised. Same thing happened with 3
Same! Definitely par for the course with Nintendo and NLG, just didn't want to get my hopes up with a 3DS port. It looks great though and gives me even more desire for a Link Between Worlds port.

The game looks like a 3DS game bumped up to a much higher resolution in the Citra emulator with better lighting.

So it looks good.

A new trailer on a Saturday?? And that's after being dated on a Sunday... I guess everything is in the cards for this year.

This game looks weird in that they brought 3DS tier geometry to Switch tier effects and image quality. Just doesn't look right at all.
Without revisiting the original, it looks to me like the models and possibly textures have likely been upgraded, though not quite to Luigi's Mansion 3 levels. However, whenever they show those large environmental shots of the world, it becomes really clear it started as a 3DS game with a conservative art style. It does look a little weird to me, too, but hopefully the actual levels look solid and cohesive.

This game being $59.99 rather than $49.99 surprises me a little. Maybe the Luigi's Mansion brand and the game quality are strong enough to get solid sales at that price.

the game is a remaster of a 3DS game with updated geometry, textures and whatnot. Not much they can do without doing a big LM3 type graphical update

here is how the intro to the original game looks like in HD, far worse than I remembered.

What I find a bit weird is that they replaced many of the character models with higher quality ones, but they still look relatively low-poly. Look at Luigi's shoes for example.

I was kinda expecting a full overhaul ngl. I mean, I'll still get it bc I'm a chump I love Luigi's Mansion... but it does make that $60 hurt a bit more.

Now that Paper Mario is about to be released, we are probably going to see more Luigi's Mansion stuff. It kind of feels like this has been under the radar.

I'm really curious to see who's behind this. I'm pretty sure it's either Grezzo or Next Level Games themselves. I'd be a little bit worried if it's Grezzo because I want them to make something Zelda soon(tho they definitely can make both a Zelda remaster and this remaster). I'd be surprised if it was NLG because it doesn't look in line with their asset quality on Switch(I mean wouldn't they reuse some models of LM3?). I'd be happy that they can make such quick turnarounds releasing games(LM3 2019, Mario Strikers 2022, LM2HD 2024, LM4 2025/26?)

I bet it's grezzo, but I doubt they worked only on that, they are a small team but they often work on one bug project alongside a smaller scale remastered like LM2

fwiw, Grezzo's president gave an interview last year while promoting Jet Dragon where he commented that the studio "tends to develop about two or three games at a time", so if LM2 is Grezzo it's probably not the only thing they've been working on

I'm a little doubtful this is Grezzo. They have so far only worked on internally developed projects, working closely with EAD/EPD.

Could absolutely change, but it's been pretty typical that Nintendo involves the original developers whenever they do a remake/remaster. Advance Wars is about the only exception I can think of where Intelligent Systems only had a supervision role. I'm thinking this will be Next Level themselves.

I still have a sealed copy of the 3ds game. I think I might dip into that instead of buying the remake. Plus since it was made with the 3ds in mind, I feel like in 3d is probably the intended first time experience. That being said, I’m glad more 3ds games are coming to Nintendos modern platforms. There are so many great games that should not be stuck on that system to die. Quite a few I would double dip on Mario 3d land, link between worlds, tomadachi life, ever oasis, samus returns, ect…

I’m still here wondering why this pretty basic port needed to be announced a full year in advance. Like big games such as Metroid Dread and Super Mario Bros Wonder were revealed and released within 4 months. Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD? Nah, 1 full year.

Reminds me of when Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story in 3DS was announced a year in advance so Nintendo could go “HEY WE’RE STILL TOTALLY SUPPORTING THE 3DS FOR ANOTHER YEAR YOU GUYS!!!”

I think they just wanted to announce as many Mario-related titles as they could at that time because of the Mario movie recently being released. It's why we had that unusual reveal for Princess Peach Showtime Princess Peach Will Star as the Main Character in a Brand New Game (temp.)

I suspect it had to do with them wanting to ride that Mario Movie hype wave as best as possible. So they sorta fired the full salvo and decided to announce as many Mario-related games as they could in one go; Luigi's Mansion 2, Untitled Peach Game, WarioWare, Mario Wonder, Mario RPG, it was a really "Mario and friends"-heavy direct all around

It's a remaster, but I imagined they announced it to add synergy with the Super Mario Bros Movie and because Luigi's Mansion 3 was the same where they announced it real early as well.

I think Grezzo would be wasted in a project like this, there's a few touch ups but it just looks like the same game in HD.

If there is no surprise Pokemon this might end up being their best selling game of the year

I remember being really hyped about it on 3DS but I had to stop playing because my L and R buttons stopped working
