StarTopic Donkey Kong Community |ST| No Country For Old Kongs

I was listening to a Mario music cover compilation the other day on YouTube, and like several minutes in they go right into Jungle Groove from DKC - and like, I appreciate it, but my brain started to hurt…my heart and soul still separates Super Mario and Donkey Kong Country.

To be fair, I believe it's appeared in more Mario spinoffs than there are Donkey Kong Country games. It's in Mario Party 1 and 10, Mario Kart 7 and 8, Mario Power Tennis and Tennis Open, Mario Golf World Tour, Mario & Sonic Rio 2016, Mario Strikers Battle League, Mario Super Sluggers and Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. Also most of the MvsDK games and the Kingdom Battle DK Adventure DLC but I feel like those are much more expected due to DK being in the title.

Shamelessly using this to point out some of the really great remixes it's gotten in Mario games.

Oh for sure! I kind of thought that too, I was just cleaning while the playlist was on was like “Awhuu?” At first when it played haha. These are all great remixes though I totally agree!

Bless the Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games series for keeping the imagery of Donkey Kong having a crocodile rival all these years when the Kremlings and K. Rool were absent on his own series

Also, this has two layers... since Donkey Kong Country came out in November 18th 1994 and the SEGA 32X (where Vector would eventually debut) in November 21st 1994.

"It's okay that there hasn't been a new DK game in ten years. The Mario vs. Donkey Kong remake will be used to advertise the Super Nintendo World DKC expansion!"

Meanwhile, the Japanese commercial for the game doesn't even show Donkey Kong.

I really want Nintendo to give DK the BoTW treatment. Meaning, I want them to look at DK with fresh eyes and make it into a powerhouse IP. I remember being over the moon when I got DKC3 for Christmas as a kid. I need a DK Christmas Nintendo.

Best case scenario, the DKC park opens up next month around the same time the Switch 2 gets revealed, and the next DK is part of the reveal trailer like how Mario Odyssey and Mario Kart 8 were for the Switch. I don't think that's very likely, but it would at least give the park some kind of new game to tie into.

Been following the whole "DK EPD" rumors since April 2021, I believe and...wow. Going to have to agree with every fan out there into saying that waiting for this new game has felt like a wasteland to get through, especially as someone with hyperfixations on stuff like this. Since those DK rumors started hitting the mainstream, I've started going through a bunch of DK games for the then 40th anniversary of the series, of which I am at ten games in. I've also started going to DK Vine for the first time (as the reports were how I discovered them). I do have some belief though that 2025 in the latest will be when this new game will be released as the Switch 2 will be a fresh start for Nintendo and their franchises like it has always been. The company after all can't just pull a Tropical Freeze and port it or Returns to the new system again (I hope). As for when I think the new game will be announced, I like to think that it will be in the Summer Direct when Nintendo will be talking about their long-term plans for the Switch 2. Perhaps we will even see the game next month during the console announcement video, although I have a feeling that will not happen. To all of the DK fandom that are reading through this, stay in there. We will make it, soon. I feel like something is in the air, tonight.💚❤️

It’s undeniable that DK is very important to Nintendo. BUT I’m beginning to believe that DK as a character is more important than DK as a franchise. They seem to have gone all in on portraying DK as a goofball that has a rivalry with Mario above all else. I think DK as a franchise is an afterthought now guys. I think we’ll get 1 new game a gen and have DK folded into the Mario franchise. Think of the DK series like Luigi’s Mansion. It’s still its own series but just a Mario spinoff. That’ll probably be the fate of DK moving forward.

Yeah, I pretty much agree with all of this, although at this rate my hopes are dwindling that we're even going to get a new game this gen. I'd love to see it proven otherwise, though.

At least we'd get a game every 6 years, it's better than nothing for a decade, lmao.

I was implying that Tropical Freeze is the “new game this gen” even though it’s not. But it ticks a box to corporate Nintendo of having a DK game on their current platform just like how the 3DS version of Returns ticked that box even though it’s also just a port. It’s pretty fucking sad but I think this is how Nintendo views it.

What broke me is that the KremlingKampaigner on Twitter who I’ve always admired has given up on this franchise and that account definitely knows more about what’s going on behind the scenes than I do.

no they fucking don't lmao
every post I've seen of them is just careful observation or blindly chasing leakers

I also second that, from actually talking to the guy regularly on Twitter, KremlingKampaigner is in the dark like a lot of us are.

I'm gonna stay positive for at least until this year is over. We still have all those EPD DK rumors from a few years ago, I'm really hoping Nintendo has something cooking for DK on Switch 2.

At least the Mini-Marios sound like Lanky Kong.

Oddly, the rumor of Switch 2 in 2025, makes me more hopeful for a DK this year as the holiday game and swan song for the Switch. 🦢 🎵

If by that you mean open world, then I do too. The issue is that I believe monolithsoft helped a lot in creating the world in botw and totk. Would Nintendo take monolithsoft away from zelda and xenoblade to instead work on a donkey kong game?

So supposedly the Switch 2 reveal is getting pushed to June. Makes sense given the rumors of the console itself now coming out in March of next year.

What's also rumored is an April direct might be happening. If this isn't another Partner Direct, I wonder what Nintendo would be showing off here?

Part of me hopes we'll see more ports to round out the rest of the year. Dreaming big here, but I'd love a DKCR returns port since an HD version already exists on Nvidia Shield in China. Maybe throw in that extra world from the 3DS version, and a few more playable Kongs and I'd bite immediately.

With 5 more Rare games coming to NSO, we've GOT to be getting the DK Land trilogy, DK64 and DKR coming in the near future, right?

...right?

(All else aside try Blast Corps if you have NSO it's so fun)

Damn, the Donkey Kong fandom can't catch a break. Not even Wikipedia articles are safe. How is Diddy less "notable" than Geno and Rabbid Peach?

It sucks, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the articles for those characters are being planned to get axed too. It seems like a lot of the non-main character pages are getting relegated to “Characters of series name

The idea of the potential story where DK pisses off the moon aliens after DKCR sounds like it could have been a really fun idea. I'm happy with the Snowmads but it would have been crazy if we got DKC: Alien Invasion instead of Tropical Freeze.
we could have been in the timeline where playable Xananab was Nintendos big announcement at the Spike 2013 game awards instead of Cranky 🙃

Maybe will get a third DKC from Retro one day where they revisit this idea.

They are about to drop a theme park based entirely on the DK franchise in 2 months. You don’t drop a theme park on a franchise you don’t see having a future

I’m positive the Land games and maybe the GBA Country games are coming. The question is when.

Same with DK64 and DKR.
I just wish they'd let you play the Land games in Super Game Boy colors. They're an eye strain in black/white, IMO.

Also localizing the GBC version of Land III wouldn't hurt, either...

I’ve always found it so weird that they just skipped part 2 on GBC. Not to mention the fact of why it received a Japanese only release.

Quoting my post from last night on general discussion, since it's the DK related thread ⬇️
Well, I'm torn between coming back to speedrunning Tinykin or starting Yakuza 4 very soon, and doing the two things at the same time will be impossible due to the amount of time I plan to put in these. So tonight I wanted to play a little game, and since I beat the DKC SNES trilogy for the first time this last week, I decided to give a shot at Donkey Kong Land, which was one of my childhood game (in which I saw like 5 levels at best lol). Turns out I really like it and most of the concerns I had completely vanished. Controls are... well, let's be honest, they are kinda bad, but also when you start to know how to play it, it's not so bad. Actually I read terrible things about that game and I have to disagree with a lot of these.

Currently at World 4-2, I'll finish this tomorrow. So far I consider only one level to be awfully bad (3-5, with these platforms you can change the direction by jumping on it). Everything else was really cool, even more considering it's a Game Boy game.

Just finished the game. That was sooooo so cool. What are your thoughts about on the DKL series, and especially the first one? It's the only one I played but I really loved it!

There's now 4 Rare games on N64 Switch Online and none of them are DK64. That plus a pattern of Nintendo withholding games they've had new projects for. I can't help but get my hopes up that something is going on there that isn't just an issue of janky emulation.

With Pokémon Legends Z-A coming out next year, the Switch's holiday lineup is completely empty. I think it would be poetic if Metroid Prime 4 and a new Donkey Kong game were the swan songs for the system; the last time a new DK game came out, people complained because it wasn't Metroid. To get both in one year would be a redemption story for the ages.

I say DK is the only series that has the brand power to carry a holiday, imo

Prime 4 could be this year, but I don't think it's getting released any later than October

Then you get a new Mario Party and another cheap remaster like Luigi's Mansion 2, and you have the second semester filled up.

Oh, of course, don't forget the usual Mario Kart 8 Deluxe bundle at the end of the year

The Pokémon announcements not including a 2024 game definitely continues to fuel my hope for MonkEPD as the holiday game.

I still wouldn't rule out a Pokemon BW remake being announced later, but it's certainly looking like a question mark what will be this year's big holiday game.

Getting EPD DK on Switch 1 this year only to spend the next 12 years pondering if the next DK game after that will be a late Switch 2 or early Switch 3 title is an appropriate fate for us DK fans

Personally I'd be alright with a DKCR port versus no mainline DK release at all, but the Pokémon news is some degree of hopium for the new game this year.

I personally wouldn't care about long wait between mainline games if we had at least spinoffs in the meantime to hold us over.

Big reason on why the wait since Tropical Freeze is so excruciating is because there was barely anything other than cameo games and a DK themed DLC in a Mario game.. While the gap between Jungle Beat and DKC Returns didn't feel that painful (at least for me; even though JB was far from a traditional game)

Ya'know, I feel like this long drought between DKC games could be softened if Nintendo pumped out more merchandise for Donkey Kong.

We got that Lego set last year, but it also feels like yet another product that straps DK to Mario. I won't lie, sometimes it frustrates me to see announcements from Goodsmile or Senai of new Nintendo merch because you won't find DK there (unless it's those old DK and Diddy Senai plushes).

I think it'd just be nice to have modern plushes of Dixie, Funky, and Cranky. Especially since Tropical Freeze has been the face of the DKC brand for a decade now. Maybe this is just the collector in me speaking, but I think that alone would satiate me for a bit.

More DK merch would absolutely sell well, but it's 99.99% DK and Diddy stuff. I'm kind of surprised some merch company out there hasn't bothered contacting Nintendo to do a merch line with decent effort put in
