News Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance announced for PC and consoles, coming June 14th (UPDATE: trailer #2, see threadmarks)

I was going to say after seeing that that the game felt a LOT like it was basically the team going "yeah, so you know how the story kind of loses its own plot in the back end? What if we made changing that the entire point of this game?" and then I saw that the director practically said as much.

I, for one, am quite excited.

Looks like it might be an "Apocalypse light" scenario.

The official site seems to mention you can pick two paths in the beginning:

  • Original path -> base SMT V without any changes
  • "Vengeance" path -> big changes in the middle and end parts of the game with new stuff

it does seem so by the official PR I've just received:

Two complete narrative paths await you, including a completely new story with new settings and demons

So, if the new path is accessible from the beginning and shows a different angle of the story + new settings and demons..I'm in.

OK this is much more interesting than I was thinking. Seems like somewhat of a midway point between a typical ATLUS re-release and a Apocalypse style alt scenario, with the stories seeming like they might end up pretty different from the mid game

From a gameplay side 40+ new demons and all demons having unique abilities (though thinking about it this might just be Traits from P5R?) is a pretty solid hook. Plus a new area and dungeon

So… I own SMTV but haven’t played it yet. Should I start it or wait for this version, do you think? I have plenty of other stuff to play in the meantime… If this is going to be a different experience, would the context of playing the original help? I am still kind of lost on what this is 😅

This, plus the idea of the other DLC being packed-in, is convincing me to get the game!

Will wait to see exactly what this adds to the original, but having this on PS5 is tempting.

Edit: If you can pick the new story from the start that's a definite plus

Looks like you will be able to bring three demons over from your SMT V save, in addition to some other bonuses, which makes it sound like we won't be able to get this as a DLC addon.

Some of the returning demons added in this new version:

Then I ain't buying this game then lol.

SMTV was my first Atlus game but after that all the Atlus games I bought were definitive editions such as P4G, P5R and 13 Sentinels.

I guess the true lesson is never buy Atlus games day 1. So with P3R and Metaphor skipping Switch, it may actually be in our favour if they come out on Switch 2 with all DLC/expansions.

Eh, I like SMT, and very much enjoyed the base game on release, I don’t really feel like I should have waited 2.5 years just for stuff that was left on the cutting room floor, that seems like a one-and-done mindset that isn’t how everyone approaches games. I mostly skip postgame and DLC stuff anyway. If the new scenario adds anything I’ll gladly choose that on a later second playthrough though.

It's unclear right now, but the original story isn't anything to write home about. I didn't dislike it, but a lot of people did.

I'm sure the new path won't rely on previous knowledge, it seems an alternative storyline. If it's like Persona 5 > Persona 5 Royal, then the story should be improved quite a lot.

I would wait to play Vengeance if I were you.

Wasn't sold until I heard the spotlight, an seperate 80 hour game game with QOL for navigating the world is all I needed to hear. But...same day as Shadow of Erdtree....gonna have to put it on hold >_<

Sigh...

The changes actually look pretty cool, and an altered storyline selectable from the start also sounds pretty good. I guess it has been long enough since SMT5 Vanilla for me to be able to justify this.

I'M HYPE

This looks so good

I assume the original story route is still going to get a lot of the new additions like new side quests and overworld stuff. I hope they do touch up the story for it a bit as well, but I'm all in just for the new story anyway. Can't wait

....only three? come on

I’m curious as to see how much of an overhaul the original game is getting VS what’s just being kept for the new route. Though the story kinda loses it in the second half of the game, I’d still like to see the original fleshed out more.

Given that this will probably still feel as rough as it did originally on Switch, I might just give it a go on PC instead. Don't think it'll fix my issues with the game, which go far beyond the technical state. But I want to give this one another chance (eventually / potentially), and a nicer technical experience will hopefully help there. Probably one for my Steam Deck.

If this game ends up being overlooked after two years of complaints about it being "confined" on the Switch I'll be extremely disappointed.

Please note that this isn't directed at you in particular, but more for the general gaming community.

This sounds good to me, I have some proper broken monstrosities :D

I didn't caught this at first, they seem to have brought back playable humans, i've been wanting that for a while, wonder if they'll stick around the game of if it's a one time only thing.

Is this the first time since Dante from the Devil May Cry series (TM)

I think until the moment it gets price drops on Steam, Switch will still end up the best selling platform for this game, with PS in a (maybe distant) third .... and let's just leave Xbox out of this.

Though it's funny that FROM does another game a disservice, huh? ;D

It's releasing on the same day as the Elden Ring expansion. Not too hopeful about it's chances.

Xbox is definitely going to be in last place, but as long as it gives my cousin a chance to play it I'm happy it's there.

I'm sorry I don't get your FROM comment though; their games never clicked with me so I usually bypass any FROM news. Did this happen before?

You almost got me ATLUS, with it being 3 years afterward I figured that it wasn't getting rerelease, but thankfully I still chose to wait. Honestly will still get this on Switch prob, I can't do long-ass JRPGs on console unless it's LaD

Damnit all, but I can still hope it finds some success. If not then maybe Nintendo can pull a Bayonetta for SMTVI lol.

Let's just say the Horizon devs didn't really like when FROM / Bamco launched Elden Ring. ;D

Yeah this actually looks awesome, assuming that the new path is as big as it seems it might be. Only shame is that either this or Elden Ring SOTE isn't coming a month earlier - I'd love to have one of them in May and then the other in June instead of on the same day :p

I finished SMTV with 100 hours.

I hope that this new path is, at least, half of the original length.

Perhaps they are other nahobinos?

SMTV always had a great style and I didn't mind the Switch performance, but it's going to look really good on PC/PS5. Only problem is then I won't get the save data carryover, whatever all that entails. Hmm.

In the stream that followed the direct, they said that the new path is 80 hours long, just like the campaign from the og game (according to their estimates at least).

I just read there won't be a DLC option for vanilla owners. Screw you Atlus.

I'm getting this on PC, it ran pretty bad on Switch anyway.

This seems to add way more than most of us expected, like something between P5R and SMTIV Apocalypse. This looks really good.

I presume it’s 80 hours considering all the previous versiok content as well

Not gonna double dip, the base game story was awful and I hate that Atlus makes the definitive version a full $60 release to fix the story. Plus it comes out on the same day as Elden Ring DLC.

Where did you read this?

Someone wrote about the stream:

Edit: some people are also saying there is an upgrade path after all, but I can't find any mention of it?

Eh, I'll just wait for either official confirmation from Atlus or at least Gematsu. People online tend to get too involved in console warring to be reliable in my opinion.
