Pre-Release Endless Ocean Luminous — Pre-release Discussion Thread

I agree that it could have looked better if they'd just waited (and also if they hadn't made the completely unnecessary choice to lean into online elements), but... I've seen many, many Switch games that look much, much worse than this, so I'm surprised to see people acting like this game's an affront to the eyes.

The dev is all-in on battle royale so it was obviously in retrospect that was how they were going to try to resurrect Endless Ocean.

amateur hour question here but what the fuck do you do in an Endless Ocean game?

Not to say that they should have gone as hard into it, but EO definitely has leaned into online more than other series for some reason…

I remember EO2 I think(?) was compatible with Wii Speak of all things…

it was indeed a surprising decision to end a partner direct with a first party published game
Nintendo: We'd like to close today's Partner Showcase with a game from our most important, precious, and talented partner: THAT'S RIGHT IT'S US WE MEAN US

WE ARE CARRYING THE REST OF YOU MOTHER FU---

Direct cuts out

I'm just pretty shocked at the stuttering and bad visuals. This is a seemingly very ambitious resurrection of Endless Ocean (a series about looking at things) and you don't just... wait until the Switch 2?
It's Endless Ocean. It was never a graphical showcase, it was always about catching a specific feel of exploring underwater with evocative visuals.
And they are aiming for apparently denser worlds (like the underwater kelp sequence shows), plus the multiplayer.

I'd still happily play the first one right now and enjoy how it looks.

Don't know anything about this series, but this looked pretty nice. So you swim around with a bunch of friends and randoms? Yeah, I can see the appeal.

Releasing this trailer during a Partner Showcase was a pretty interesting experiment for Nintendo. Gets the game way more attention rather than competing and being overshadowed by a bunch of other first/second party reveals.

So excited about this. Loved the first two games. Put probably around 100 hours into each of the first two games.

Not sure why some are hating on it, I think it looks great.

look. I love the ocean. I love looking at creatures. but I really struggle with games where the objective is mostly “swim about it”

turns out things like Dave the Diver appeal to me a bit more because there are more things to do than stare in wonder.

So, I guess… is there at least like, a journal you can fill out? or is it all… swammin’

Another franchise I skipped back on the Wii. I doubt that this will be a day 1 game, but I'll probably pick it up at some point.

I mean if any game benefits from procedural generation, it's endless ocean
you know what, I can see it being great with the right injections of pre-made content. swimming through the exact same reef to get to the later parts in the first two games wasn't exactly thrilling.

I called Endless Ocean from the dolphin hint and I'm glad for it, but Nintendo seems to really not understand what graphics look like these days on literally everything else from phones to other video game systems.

Fingers crossed EOL will get some kind of HD graphics patch for the Switch 2 or something.

the second game straight up has a story and characters and shit

the graphics probably have more to do with it being low budget than being on switch

reminder that the dev's last game was mario 35

Second game straight up had a story with like puzzles and finding Atlantis and shit

so cool, though it will probably also be too scary for me

the Wii-ass UI and fonts truly delight me

You explore several diving spots, identify fish and find treasures that you can sell for for better equipment etc.

I could definitely be interested in picking this up, but man, I wish the game looked more visually appealing. It also looked like it was chugging at times - hopefully there's a technical improvement by May. Could be a really zen game to bring on a tropical vacation (looking at Aruba or Mexico for this year). The multiplayer connection definitely excited me

Fair. I think I'd be bothered a lot less if they didn't, uh, totally ignore the story/single-player element in this trailer, ha. I can't really get a feel for what the core of the game is supposed to look like here, as much as I'm still excited to hop into more diving.

Can I just say I love how the breathing noise in the trailer was ripped straight out of the first two games.

Also I cannot imagine there won’t be a story, even if it is more in-line with the first game…

Everblue 2 and both Endless Oceans have plots about finding lost civilizations and stuff… Especially with them talking about how weird the Veiled Sea is, I can’t imagine they won’t have something like that here too.

I hope a physical version for this game :)
There will, at least in Europe.
Once again, this direct in Europe had "eshop" written on top of the games logo for games that would release only digitally. Endless Ocean didn't have it.

assuming that's true in all regions, interesting new era for "what even is a partner direct" discussions
Nintendo already plays fast and loose with what they mean when they say a Direct "focuses" on games for a certain period of time (e.g. announcing games for H2 when a Direct "focuses" on H1), so I guess it's a natural extension of that to allow for first-party published games in a limited capacity in a format that "focuses" on third-parties.

am I on drugs? Everyone’s like “looks like TRASH” but I thought this game looked incredible. It’s exactly what I need in my life: a chill ass look-at-fish game. And I though the graphics were nice?

true believers rise up, katherine sunday for smash

goddamn, famicom detective club, another code, and now this, i can't believe nintendo is finally good again

Don't think that waiting for it to release on Switch 2 will magically make it look better lol.
It's not a big budget game. It's all about the mood.

I just want to zone out and look at fish. Screw all the haters. I’m going to look at fish

Right? Do I wish this was an absolute blowout graphical showcase on Switch 2? Yes. Yes, I do. But it looks very pleasant for what it is, and it's not like Arika is rolling in budget.

It's a lot of unrealistic expectations put upon this game by people disappointed about the Switch 2 rumors and hoping the partner direct would make up for it.

Like, I'm disappointed in the rumors too, but I also just like looking at fish.

He probably thinks Dave the Diver looks horrible, not realizing it's supposed to be in retro style. Some won't understand the intention of games/budgets.

It's why I'm a Nintendo fan - the focus should be on gameplay, not graphics.
