News the PC port of Days Gone is "finally" available DRM-free thanks to GOG.

an interesting case, as despite what GOG has claimed. the Epic Games Store version is also DRM-free after it's installed with the launcher.
Playstation in general has been surprisingly friendly with DRM-free releases through this method. with other notable titles available like this including both Spider-Man games, the Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, and Horizon Zero Dawn (which was similarly added to GOG later on.)

another interesting detail to note is that this is the only PC port from Playstation's new initiative to natively run on Windows 7, everything else they've released uses various APIs that only exist on Windows 10 or later.
so while the EGS launcher at least still works on 7 for now (with no current plans to discontinue it unlike Steam) the GOG release will definitely become easier to install on that OS in the long term. as said launcher is built off Chromium just like Steam is.

The GOG version will have the option of a DRM-free executable that you can archive that doesn't care if GOG itself still exists - part of being truly drm free is the ability to come back in ten years and have something that you can still run. Not used EGS, if you wanted to install it in the future would the EGS servers still need to exist in order to initially install, or can they provide some sort of executable?

you'd need the launcher for the initial install, yes. but it's not required at any point afterwards.
all you have to do is backup the folder the game was installed to. and it'll run pretty much anywhere regardless if the EGS launcher is installed or not.

the important thing to consider though is that not every game on the Epic Games Store is DRM-free like this. so those would definitely be in danger if they ever decided to shut down.
regardless. a pretty good chunk of the store's library (particularly earlier on) is on that list of DRM-free tites. including several other games that aren't on GOG currently.

Oh that's cool, so they're portable installations without any registry entries or such?

God Of War and Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection will also get added in the future.

this is a bit more notable, as it does seem like God Of War has basic DRM applied to it on the Epic Games Store.

yeah, i don't think any of Sony's PC ports released so far touch the system registry. even on storefronts that use DRM.

Very cool, very appreciated- but very very very super fucking late to the party.

And I say that as someone who regularly buys great games on GOG for their DRM free properties- zero of these "Sony high profile" games outside of Horizon Zero Dawn are worth playing more than once (imo) and they've been around for years.

I saw the thread title and first thought was: "And new do Uncharted and Spider-Man!"
Happy to see part of it is happening!

Big props to Sony. I make it a point to buy most games on GOG or other DRM free storefronts.
Have been holding off from buying UC and GOW so far. Will probably bite when they release.
