Famiboards Presents: The Super Mario All-Stars Celebration Event | July 14 - September 14

Welcome, one and all, to the Super Mario All-Stars Celebration! With the opening of Super Nintendo World in Universal Studios Hollywood and the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, everyone’s favorite plumber has had quite the busy 2023! But now, it’s time to bring things back to the video games we all know and love. We’re here to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Super Mario All-Stars (July 14th, 1993) and celebrate the upcoming release of Super Mario Bros. Wonder with some challenges from the classics.

Featured Games

In this event, you will be participating in challenges from the original run of 2D Super Mario games from 1985 to 1995:
  • Super Mario Bros.
  • Super Mario Bros. 2 (J): The Lost Levels
  • Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA)
  • Super Mario Bros. 3
  • Super Mario Land
  • Super Mario World
  • Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins
  • Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island

Event Guidelines

This event will run from July 14th, 2023 to September 14th, 2023 (11:59 ET). Across the eight featured games, we’ll be offering 50 main badges and 10 bonus badges - the largest number yet from a single Famiboards event!
But with challenges ranging from simple to difficult, anyone can come in, play some Super Mario,
and walk away with a few badges to display on their profiles!
And with 15 Famicoins awarded per badge, Super Players will be earning plenty of cash for all those one-ups!

In order to earn a badge, make sure to provide the appropriate credit! For each badge, a "Picture Proof" prompt has been provided in its description. All you need to do is provide the appropriate screenshot, photo, or screenshot.
We’ll be using the honor system here, so please be honorable! Otherwise, all versions of each game are permitted unless otherwise specified. We'll also allow playthroughs of the games from throughout 2023 to count for badges - so long as you have the picture proof or the Famiboards posts to prove it! Feel free to use guides or video references to help you through
each game, and you may play on any platform you have (not just original hardware).
But do make sure that all gameplay is your own!

As part of this event, we will be offering prizes to participants! Every five badges you earn will give you an entry into a raffle.
Those who manage to earn the coveted "You are a Super Player!!" badge will get an additional ten entries.
Two lucky winners will receive a $20 eShop gift card, but the grand prize winner will receive a mighty prize:
a digital copy of Super Mario Bros. Wonder when it releases on October 20th, 2023! Good luck to all the entrants!
(Note that, of course, as the person running the event, my name will not be put in the prize drawing,
regardless of how many badges I earn!)

We will also be offering a high score table with its own prize - see Post #5 for more details.

Special thanks to @Aurc and @Josh5890 for helping me organize this event,
in particular with Aurc’s graphic design for the badges and Josh’s badge ideas.
Couldn’t have done this without you, friends!

Advance Challenges

When the 2D Mario titles were re-released as the Super Mario Advance series, additional challenges were added,

For those who want to see everything the Advance titles have to offer, and for those looking to go above and beyond,
these challenges are for you.

These are considered bonus challenges on top of the main fifty featured in the event.
You do not need to complete them in order to earn the "You Are A Super Player!!" badge.

High Score Tables

Super Mario games may mostly use their points for show, but for this event, let’s have some fun chasing those top scores. At the end of each game, report the score you earned with picture proof! For each game with a scoring system, the top ten highest scores will be reported. This is besides Yoshi’s Island, where all people who achieve a perfect score of 5400 (SNES) or 6000 (GBA) will be listed alongside the ten other highest scores. Additionally, as scoring differs between releases, there will be different tables for each applicable version of a game.

Each placement in a high score list will be an entry into a raffle to win a digital copy of Super Mario Bros. Wonder when it releases on October 20th, 2023! However, keep in mind that if you already won a prize from the main event raffle,
you will not be eligible for this prize.
Like with the main raffle, while I will be sharing scores for the High Score Tables, I will not be eligible for this raffle.

Well this is an easy one to jump into. I suck at time challenges tho. But clearing a couple games is easy enoufh

Super Mario Land 2 is accepted but 3 is excluded? Oh, how I wish my man Wario'd take back control of this sinful place...

I had already been the vast majority of the way through a Super Mario World playthrough recently, so I finished it up and made a little video compiling all 6 of the badges for it! It took me a bit to realize the last two exits I needed were the final Ghost House and one of the Star Road regular exits. Maybe the vid could be helpful for first-time players or people just looking for a bit of guidance for some.

EDIT: I hadn't noticed the score section, right before finishing Bowser I had 42190 which afaik is the last time your score is displayed in-game.
BTW, if being mostly through a playthrough doesn't count, that's ok! I was planning on doing the GBA version as well anyway so I can get the badges for SMW there.

Quick Q. How do you want us submitting the proof?
Every badge has a "Picture Proof" section. Take a screenshot or video that matches the description, then share it here!

Famiboards does not host images directly, so you'll have to link from another source. Using something like Postimages, Flickr, or social media to host the pictures would be fine as long as you properly share them here.

Impressive work, my friend! First badges of the event, and first scores on the score table! I'll be curious to see your play of the GBA version!

Just wanted to make sure. With the amount of challenges this thread will get very pic heavy.

Making my way through SMW, started with the Giant Gate, will probably post the others I'll do collected, to make things less cluttered :D

Wow! For a very small amount of time it's like I'm in a little exclusive club.

Oh shoot, I already love badge events, and the mario side scrollers are my jam. I expect to earn many badges and raffle tickets here.

Wow, this seems really fun! I will accept the challenge and finally play these Mario games, maybe I'll learn a thing or 2 about Platformer Game design down the road as well which I wanted to start for quite a while already.

Amazing effort here, awesome job 😁👍

It's my turn to earn some badges. We're starting with Super Mario All-Stars's rendition of Super Mario Bros. I generally like the NES version more, but I've played that one like a dozen times (and back on MAR10 Day, too), so why not mix things up?

Top of the Flagpole

Fireworks Show

Exploring the Kingdom's Secrets (I believe these are all of the unique bonus rooms in SMB1?
Fire Flower Power
Retainer Retriever
Your Quest is Over and Let's-a Go!
A New Quest Completed and High Score Chaser (I wasn't expecting to get all 2 million points from here, but I'll take it)
And lastly, Turtle Tipping

I'd say that was a pretty successful first day!

@VolcanicDynamo woult it be also possible to add SMBDX to the ace coin collector? It has challenge mode where you can collect 5 coins in each level and there is a screen that displays which show the status of each level

What's considered a bonus area in Mario Land 1? Like if you go through the door at the end?
Bonus areas are the hidden rooms you find going down pipes. Like this one (not my original image, so excuse the quality):

mqdefault.jpg

I used the terminology "bonus area" because SMAS has those "BONUS" background images in the equivalent areas.

First round of badges rolling in!

The below should have evidence of Let's-a Go, Retainer Retriever (shamefully misspelled), Your Quest is Over, and A New Quest Completed. The second shot also has my entry for high score for mario 1 on NES at 779750.

This next batch should have B-Dasher (in level 1-1), Top of the Flagpole along with Fireworks Show, Turtle Tipper, and Fire Flower Power.

@VolcanicDynamo If anything looks suspect, please let me know! Thanks for running the event! I've got a few more pictures loaded and ready, but need to get some things from lost levels and the like. I didn't look into it, but is it possible to max out the score in SMB1? It seems pretty doable as I'm not much of a strategizer and just kind of went in looking to kill everything and grab most of the coins.

Looks good! I've given you the badges. It is technically possible to max out the score counter in Super Mario Bros., but it's kinda boring to actually do so. Lots of intentional deaths!

Got another batch - unless I'm mistaken, this should get me Retainer Retriever, B-Dasher, Top of the Flagpole, Your Quest is Over, A New Quest Completed, Fireworks Show, Exploring the Kingdom's Secrets, Fire Flower Power, and Turtle Tipping (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong).

The final clip is just to show my score (595250) - SMB1 has never really been my favourite so I didn't really want to try too hard for points, but this was actually my first time ever doing a Hard Mode playthrough so that was neat.

This is very cool! Not sure when I'll get around to playing a Mario game, but it's been quite a while so it's probably about time.

It's a grand occasion of Mario celebration, so I'm posting some of my favorite Mario-themed dril tweets. Gonna put these behind a spoiler tag, since there's a bit of the 'ol toilet humor in a couple of these (which fits, since Mario, himself a plumber, is involved in the human waste industry).

Has anyone ever been able to do the "connect your switch to your phone" thing so you can put screenshots there? Scanning the QR code doesn't seem to work for me.
Works for me. It should connect to the switch like it’s a WiFi device. Then another QR code comes up to open the image

Lovely game, hard mode was fun. One of the great ending themes Tanaka is so great at.

It used to work perfectly for me but then for some reason it stopped about a year ago. Same Switch, same phone, just.. doesn't wanna connect.

I did it for the screenshots I posted today. I scan the one and have it connect to the "new wifi", then I get the second code and open the link, then I download my images.
