I read the emphasis on players who stay far away from the action as them wanting to push special farmers closer to the frontlines where they'll be vulnerable and forced to interact with their teammates and enemies. That interaction can be picking fights where opportune or, for the most part, avoiding direct challenges. Painting map control will hopefully always be a major component of any winning strategy and I'm not quite ready yet to write off the support role, or radically redefine it, on the evidence of this early in the meta.
The support role is much healthier in this game due to many support specials requiring you to be on the frontlines to use them effectively, which forces you to take fights still. So while painting for special is still important, many weapons will be forced to pick fights before getting special, which I like

I just adapt to whatever team I get put on tbh, if I see more people going for splats I just largely focus on inking, if i see them having weapons more suited for inking, I try to go on the offense so we can reach more inking space in enemy territory!

I've reached the point where I don't care about my occasional giant losing streak so I just play for fun and healthy competition lolol.

I consider match making another variable for the game, to see how well you can work together, makes it more fun tbh!

Edit:
I probably have more leeway in changing my style on the go since I main a pretty all rounder weapon, aka the splattershot xD

Well matchmaking is another can of worms. I'm convinced that in the end being on the right spot ,winning fights have already been the key to success.
Painting is like the essential stuff but at this point everyone understood and you should not really think about it, it's a mean to an end. Painting for painting, staying behind is not leading to much of anything. Tournaments are also always kills carnage so I don't follow you on that comment.

You have no idea how many people I see in S+ rushing into fights deep into enemy territory, surrounded by hostile ink, without bothering to paint a solid base, a path, or even the barest minimum of an escape option. Patience to build specials before going for the objective also cannot be assumed.

As for the latter comment, there's an undeniable gap between the expected splat counts of support weapons and slayers. More passive painting roles being forced into fights by the aggressive roles isn't the same as everyone making fragging their driving purpose.

Aerospray and Splat Roller with Big Bubbler is probably the ideal state for support. Primarily painting and poking, but required to pick the right time to push aggressively and with the inherent risk of getting close to the enemy. Ink Vac also hints at a similar design goal, so it's baffling how Tenta Missiles returned at all and specifically with the range it has.

Yeah, I think Big Bubbler and Ink Vac are my favorite support special designs ever. It is absolutely baffling how missiles returned indeed, especially when Killer Wail 5.1 exists, which does the same thing but with a healthier (though still imperfect) design.

My only hold-up with Big Bubbler is how powerful it turned out to be. Tower Control was expected, of course. On the other hand I never saw it becoming the immovable force in Splat Zones I thought Ink Vac would be.

I find it's even stronger in Clam Blitz than Splat Zones with its built-in beakon (but requires more skill at the same time)

I've played exceedingly little Clam Blitz so I haven't seen that use of it, but yeah, I can imagine it being strong. Similar to how Big Bubbler can sustain a push in Rain Maker that would have fallen apart otherwise.

Big Bubbler benefits from being a team special where team coordination is rather intuitive. Tacticooler requires everyone to go get their drinks. Ink Vac depends on teammates to protect and push. Big Bubbler just needs teammates to superjump, which people already love to do in situations where there's no incentive to superjump and actually incentives NOT to superjump!

It is very strong, but I don't think that's the fault of the design of the special. It already does so in Tower Control, but I wish the duration/HP was less or decayed faster if placed on/close to the objective in other modes too.

Yeah, I'm not good enough to tell if Big Bubbler is a problem and even if it was, the design is such that it's easy to tune without changing anything about how the special works fundamentally. It also seems to die quickly if focused, so even just the existence of Object Shredder keeps it in check to a good degree.

Is it me or are there way more obvious ragequits than in Splatoon 2? I see so many 1-person disconnects from players who just died or lost the lead when it's close to the end of a game, while they weren't laggy at all.

In Splatoon 2 most disconnects were from people who were lagging the whole game or teleported around a bit before disconnecting.

I'm the kind of toxic that's self-aware enough to praise the game for not allowing me to share my toxicity via voice chat.
It's a good thing there is no voice chat otherwise the people I play with would be assaulted by my nonstop profanity. Yet at the end of session of Splatoon I always feel relaxed like all my stress has been washed away.

My favorite think about Ink Strike in Salmon Run is that if you throw it near the water, it will just go into the water 100% of the time. I love how it just flies through enemies, especially since it's area of effect is so small that you need it you actually stick to the enemies for it to do anything at all.

Fucking trash special, I refuse to believe they tested it at all in Salmon Run.

3 is a lot more frustrating than 2 in a lot of ways so that doesn't surprise me

I wish I had this healthy of a relationship with Splatoon. Instead I'm usually still grinding my teeth when maps and modes flip over to a new rotation and then I have to destress in Salmon Run unless it's one of those times when three teammates try to revive me by big shotting eggs at my life saver stuck under a dozen Steel Eels, Flipper-Floppers, Lids and Scrappers by the basket when we're at 24 seconds remaining and 3/26 collectAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!!

I often feel obligated to quit so my team doesn't take the hit for my poor performance

I yeah'd PhillFencer's post above in jest but for real don't do this. Get you medals. By quitting you rob yourself of the chance to see the post-match stat screen and realize your teammates actually performed worse than you thought you did.

I'm that person that gets upset with my teammates when I run in to fight people and die :p

to be fair, people do play stupidly passive in solo sometimes, but sometimes I also just pick unwinnable fights

this isn't much consolation to a charger player. their poor performance is because I'm not doing my job

if I could go back I would've never gotten hooked on chargers, it's too much responsibility

If this isn't a joke then it's an awful mindset; especially for Splatoon where the momentum can shift at the drop of a hat. I have had plenty of matches throughout the series where my team was pushed to the brink then came back to win it all during the last seconds which wouldn't be possible if one of them just quit on the team.

I do it very rarely, mostly because I'm worried about Nintendo banning me

I also have to be doing really terribly to even consider it. like, missing every shot and blundering constantly

I'd rather others not be demerited for my complete incompetence, but if I wanted to help other people I wouldn't play at all lol

would get a lot of enjoyment out of practice lobbies for each mode with no numbers attached at all

I treat Open like this. It's not quite no numbers attached but +8/-5 per game is close enough to having zero impact on your rank progression I feel comfortable goofing off with bad weapons or leveling gear.

Don't make me explain a joke please.

I have a pretty, infectious laugh you wouldn't want to deprive the world of, would you?

The great thing about this series is that you don't have to be consistently splatting opponents. Recently I played with a charger who had zero splats but was the most helpful member on the team because he watched everyones movement and used his charger to pave the way for us.

Disconnecting because of poor performance is more of a hinderance to others then just staying to the end, win or not. If you're not getting the performance you expect from yourself then switch tactics and ink the ground so your team has more room to swim around.

To back this up: I've been locked down by Chargers with, in the end, entirely unimpressive splat counts, simply because going up against them as another backliner (or midliner, or frontliner, really) you have to assume a certain level of competence unless you want to risk getting blown out. And that respect demanded by chargers for simply existing shapes the game whether they're on a hot streak or don't land their shots.

At the same time I absolutely understand the frustration of seeing a teammate get splatted after you missed your shots and their attacker could just walk forward into your zone of control.

I disagree with this; as a frontliner if I see chargers missing shots I just won't respect them at all and its won me several games. I think you should approach chargers not respecting them at first to judge their competence, and if they're bad then just treat them like a doormat.

If you see them missing several easy shots, maybe you can start taking up positions you otherwise wouldn't. Not respecting chargers at the start, though, is asking to get wiped and lose on the enemy's first push. For a backliner that is. For a frontliner the calculation is different. If an agent of chaos takes a risk that doesn't work out, they get to try again with better intel next time. Someone who's supposed to be the source of stability for their team does that and the game is over before it's started.

Yeah I know, which is why I said, "as a frontliner". Granted I also think that if you lose on the first push despite the presence of checkpoints in both rainmaker and tc, then your team was just fucked in the first place.

Any weapon is enjoyable with the right kit imo

I used to hate aerospray in Splatoon 2 until I realized I could farm ballers, run behind enemies and then baller the moment I felt threatened, rolling to a different spot behind them :)

Ngl the amount of Splattershot users is kinda annoying at the moment, I went through my battle reports and 2/3 of the matches has at least one. I don't think a nerf is the answer tho. It's just that Nintendo is pushing it too much: easy to play, nice kit, versatile, story mode spotlight. Maybe buffing other weapon types could fix it?

Or just fix the matchmaking such that not all the shooters are on the same team

I don't think they ever want splattershot to disappear from lobbies. They kept buffing Splattershot (among other shooters) in Splatoon 2, even when it was high tier, just to make sure it didn't fall off

This is what it feels like to read this thread :p (It's my favorite thread, tho)

I like reading about other players experiences, the meta, strategies, analysis, tips, complaints, the data mining, etc. You're all great about all that, but despite the thousands of hours I have played between the 3 games, I've never been that hardcore and I usually have fun even during a bad day or a major losing streak. The moment a game makes me feel bad about myself or is making you so angry to the point of raging, perhaps it's time to change how to approach it.

Anyway, here's a video of a revenge wipeout :D

see how do you all know this. I have only the most vague awareness of what my teammates are doing. Easy. My level of awareness while in-game is 1% of what I know it should be.

So I can sound all smart here, but in actuality I have to remind myself before every match: "This time you're gonna work checking the map whenever opportune." "This time your eyes will dart towards the top of the screen to always keep in mind who has the number's advantage." "This time please focus on taking up positions that form a triangle with your two most upfront teammates."

Whenever you read a post of mine, just imagine me getting splatted by a bomb right next to me which I was completely oblivious to. Because that'll give you a more accurate idea of where I'm at.
