News Sega has cancelled their looter shooter hyenas, layoffs at creative assembly

Sega has cancelled Hyenas, the multiplayer extraction shooter in development at UK studio Creative Assembly.



Issuing a warning to investors that it will record a loss for the financial year, Sega said "profitability has been lowered mainly in European bases". As a result, it has implemented "structural reforms aimed at increasing efficiency", and reviewed in-development games. "We have made the difficult decision to cancel some titles under the development as well as to reduce the fixed expenses," Sega said.

"In response to the lower profitability of the European region, we have reviewed the title portfolio of each development base in Europe and the resulting action will be to cancel Hyenas and some unannounced titles under development," Sega continued. "Accordingly, we will implement a write-down of work-in-progress for titles under development."

If this was a looter shooter, it might have had a chance to survive. But it was not. It was ANOTHER Overwatch clone. Something the gaming world needs the least. Literally no one is asking for more hero shooters but for some reason the devs are pushing them down our throats non stop. Not even a traditional deathmatch type of games, no. Team based vs shooter with classes. Why? Much easier to sell them skins and shit.

That reminds me, that Star Wars Hunters game from Zynga is still in development for Switch. What was that? Ah yes. An Overwatch clone.
 
Youtuber Volund, with VGC collaborating, have talked with former developers who say the game was plauged by lack of direction from bad and unable to be fired management, disruptive engine changes mid-development, and overtly-cautious design in a highly competitive market.

There's also claims it was Sega largest investment ever, outpacing the $70 million spent on the original Shenmue.

Well I’m not surprised this lacked direction. It seemed designed to make money more than being a fun game, which of course led to it losing money.

Really insightful video. That one dude at the 3:15 mark who, in the middle of explaining what happened to the studio structure, taking some time to complain about the Halo Wars 2 team slowly making the rest of CA "dangerously woke" felt a bit outta pocket though, ngl.
