Today, we’re continuing our commitment to give players more choice and value by introducing Xbox Game Pass Core, launching on September 14. Game Pass Core is the evolution of Xbox Live Gold. Game Pass Core will give players access to our advanced multiplayer network, a select collection of over 25 games to play with friends around the world, and exclusive member deals, all for $9.99 USD per month or $59.99 USD per year.

yeah, it's been around since the launch of Xbox Live. though it wasn't called that back then.
initally the service was solely subscription based, as it's main feature was just online multiplayer. the inital option used a "starter kit" bundle containing a headset, a disc to install the necessary dashboard update, and 12 months of subscription.
gamers will be able to renew their subscriptions by buying a renewal card from a videogame retailer, entering the code from the card into their Xboxes and getting 12 more months of Xbox Live for $49.99. This means you won't have to take a direct hit to your credit card, you know the one you used to sign up for Xbox Live back in the day?
but the release of the 360 lead to the existence of a free tier, with the subscripion getting rebranded as "Xbox Live Gold". as by this point features like downloadable games (these existed on the OG Xbox, but were extremely limited and required a special disk to run them.) and DLC had gotten large enough to be a extra non-subscription based revenue stream.
Xbox Live Silver is a free, communication-heavy service that allows you to send text and voice messages and also to visit Microsoft's new online marketplace, where you can get game demos and other downloadable content. The full Xbox Live Gold service takes it to the next step, letting you match up with other gamers online with similar tastes and skills as yours for a healthy session of competitive gaming.
both tiers lasted as the status quo for quite some time, until Microsoft came up with the idea for Game Pass in 2017.
it naturally managed to overshadow the other options due to it's nature, but it wasn't until now when Microsoft decided to go all-in on having it be the only subscription option.

everyone who has previously subbed to Gold will get moved to the new core tier, and you'll still need a sub to access your previously claimed Games With Gold titles. (with the exception of the old 360/OG Xbox titles, those are permenantly bound to your account.)
that's honestly my biggest issue with the new setup, GwG was designed so that you'd keep your games as long as you stay subscribed. while Game Pass uses a rotation system which slides your options in and out over time. it won't be an issue for now as the vast majority of confirmed titles are 1st-party games (which are rarely cycled out), but it'll get problematic over time as more 3rd parties are thrown in (or even Forza, for that matter. those are always delisted after a few years due to car licensing.)

Should just get rid of the paywall for online and focus on game pass. Such a dumb change.

I think it's about time the subscription services from each of the big 3 stop putting online access behind a paywall and just continue to use actual games to sell these services.

I don't think that's the way things are going in the world in general, unfortunately.

0 chance of that. Online play is the primary driver for so many people's reason to even have these subscriptions.

That makes me less likely to buy a subscription, since I really don't get good vibes from the whole Game Pass model.

because it also includes other junk like EA play that isn't included in standard gamepass for console or pc
EA Play is included in the PC package though according to the linked page.

The only thing unique to Ultimate is this vague “perks” addition to the “member deals & discounts” line

ultimate also includes it for console, which normal game pass for console doesn't

and then they can chuck in stuff like the crunchyroll promo into ultimate as well and call it a package

Ultimate is also just a tiny bit cheaper than getting online and game pass separately so why not get both for cheaper, or so the thinking goes.

Crunchyroll promo is interesting, especially because it's a Sony property.

actually a decent selection of smaller indies here, though i'd still prefer the original setup of only 2 games per month. but you can "claim" them and get permanent access as long as you stay subscribed.
