Ooooo boy this is gunna be fun. The more I list the tougher it gets to organize them. I don’t replay games as often as I want to so it’s tough to say where they go after 5. But regarding strictly the Switch, this is how I rank them:

1) Super Smash Bros Ultimate
2) Super Mario Odyssey
3) The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
4) Pokémon Legends: Arceus
5) Fire Emblem Three Houses

Rocket League
Pikmin 4
The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild
Metroid Dread
Tetris 99
Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition for the Nintendo Switch Family of Systems
Persona 5 Royal
Xenoblade Chronicles 3
Vampire Survivors
Luigi’s Mansion 3
Shin Megami Tensei 5
New Pokémon Snap
NEO: The World Ends With You
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
Octopath Traveler

Honorable Mentions:

Bowser’s Fury

Bayonetta 2

Switch has lots of great games.

After that last Direct? No fucking way. Nintendo cancelled all their games and said "they belong in a museum!" after the financial success of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. So they started building the Nintendo musuem, so they could never make another game again.

This is probably the closest thing to a definitive list for me, based on a combination of games that have given me the strongest memories with the Switch (particularly the top half), and games that I've had a blast experiencing with friends & family (mostly the bottom half).

1. Tears of the Kingdom
2. Hades
3. Breath of the Wild
4. Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
5. Celeste
6. Super Mario Odyssey
7. Metroid Dread
8. Nier Automata
9. Pikmin 3 Deluxe
10. Tetris 99
11. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
12. Xenoblade Chronicles DE

Honourable mention: SNES NSO

I'll include games I've played on PC on this list that have Switch versions. Sorry if the Switch versions of some of these games are bad. Also my order could change at any point. I'm sure I've made lists in the past on here that are at odds with this lol.

1. Hollow Knight
2. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
3. Dragon Quest XI S
4. Octopath Traveler II
5. Fire Emblem: Three Houses
6. Xenoblade Chronicles 2
7. 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim
8. Super Mario Odyssey
9. Shin Megami Tensei V
10. ENDER LILIES: Quietus of the Knights
11. Celeste
12. Paper Mario: The Origami King
13. Ori and the Will of the Wisps
14. The Messenger
15. Metroid Dread
16. Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
17. AI: The Somnium Files
18. Valkyria Chronicles 4
19. Astalon: Tears of the Earth
20. Astral Chain

All I know is that if SMT5 had a story that felt complete then it'd have a shot at the best game on this list. Such amazing gameplay in that game. Could probably make a similar statement for Origami King but the opposite. If that game had a better battle system it'd have a shot at one of the top spots. Two great games despite their faults. Idk that just jumped out at me when I put this together lol. Also 12 of these games are either a JRPG or metroidvania.

My first crack at it, though I feel like I’m leaving a lot of games off that might make a list I spent more time on it.

  1. Xenoblade Chronicles 2
  2. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
  3. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  4. The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles
  5. 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim
  6. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
  7. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
  8. Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury
  9. Persona 5 Royal
  10. Fire Emblem: Three Houses
  11. Celeste
  12. Tetris 99
  13. Super Mario Odyssey
  14. Monster Hunter Rise
  15. Paper Mario: The Origami King
  16. The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening
  17. Luigi’s Mansion 3
  18. Animal Crossing: New Horizons
  19. Kirby and the Forgotten Land
  20. Metroid Dread

I am technically keeping track of this, but I'm going to take a stab at it from the heart to keep things interesting :)

Given some qualifiers...

  • Obviously there is recency bias, especially in a world where Nintendo is presently giving me exactly what I want between totk/p4/Mario Wonder.
  • I am not including all ports here as I am too platform agnostic at this stage to really do so correctly - just ones I played on Switch
  • I expect many titles yet to release to take a spot:
    • Mario Bros. Wonder
    • Sonic Superstars (I won't get it on Switch probably)
    • Metroid Prime 4
    • WarioWare Move It
  • I also expect many titles early in progress / backlogged to take a spot:
    • Metroid Prime: Remastered
    • Fire Emblem: Three Houses
    • M+R: Sparks of Hope
    • Spiritfarer
    • Ni No Kuni
    • Chicory

Cream of the Crop

Honorable Mentions

EDIT: Oops I made a mistake using stars, markdown is f-ing with some of these... I'll fix later lol

So glad to see M+R got a Whoa

I tried to make it mostly exclusives or console exclusives, the list changes a lot if i include the rest of the games available for the switch.

2.- Xenoblade 2 + Torna (Or your favorite xeno game)
3.- Smash Ultimate
4.- Super Mario Odyssey
5.- Zelda Botw (Even if it is kind of a Wii U game)

10.- Monster Hunter Rise
11.- Animal Crossing New Horizons

18.- Monster Hunter Stories 2
19.- Persona 5 Royal

This is somewhat easy for me to put together in that I rank all of the physical games I beat, but then there’s so many amazing digital only games this is painful lol. I’m sticking with just games I finished on Switch and I’ll exclude NSO. Also shoutout to the Crunchyroll app for being my most used lol. I decided to include remakes / remasters which muddies things a bit, but whatever.

1 Super Smash Bros Ultimate
2 Xenoblade Chronicles 3
3 Metroid Prime Remastered
4 Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition
5 Zelda Breath of the Wild
6 Neo The World Ends With You

Trails of Cold Steel 4
Trails Into Reverie

Great thread!

So, this is my list. Only going through the games I own. Of course if I owned games like FFIX, Undertale, etc, they would be super high, but only from what I own, this is it.

Wildcards: Eliza, Sayonara Wild Hearts, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, I Was A Teenage Exocolonist and Labo

This is a very rough top 20 from me. There’s been so many huge timesinks that I tend to forget all the amazing indies I’ve played too. Nintendo’s own stuff doesn’t even rise that high on my list despite it being their strongest first party lineup since the SNES IMO, that’s how highly I regard the system. I could write a top 50 easily and still have it full of absolute classics, Dragon Quest Builders 2 and various Mario games all just missed this cut of the last 6.5 years. Tough to narrow down the top spots. Also, this is only out of games I’ve played, which it’s probably only out of a hundred or so at the most. There’s 150 more on my wishlist.

Monster Hunter Rise
Octopath Traveller II
Dragon Quest XI
SMTV
Infernax
Streets of Rage 4
Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Rise of the Third Power
Cyber Shadow
Triangle Strategy
Huntdown
Great Ace Attorney Chronicles
Fire Emblem: Three Houses
The Legend of Zelda: Links Awakening
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Octopath Traveller
Advance Wars
Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana
Monster Hunter Stories 2

I'll be here a while if I want to do my list justice, but I will say that I believe F-Zero 99 just slid into my top 3 with TOTK and Dread. It's my literal dream game so here we are.

1. Breath of the Wild
2. Tears of the Kingdom

18. Mario Tennis Aces
19. Golf Story
20. Dicey Dungeons

I’ve really enjoyed the Switch’s library and it’s gotten me to try out several genres I did not previously play. It was difficult to narrow the list down to 20 and I’m still excited about several upcoming releases.

There are 6 games where i have beaten the 100 hour mark

  • Super smash bros ultimate
  • Monster Hunter Rise
  • Monster Hunter generations ultimate
  • Breath of the wild
  • Bayonetta 3
  • Bayonetta
While it may be quite lame to make a list based on playtime, those are in fact the 6 games i enjoyed the most on switch. ToTK and The wonderful 101 join at 85 hours but i don't look that fondly on ToTK. Other games that i really enjoyed were Splatoon 3, Astral Chain, Fire emblem three houses and mario strikers battle league.

I poured 500+ hours into MHR/Sunbreak. I always find MH interesting in these discussions as it tends to be either a series people rate incredibly highly or don’t play at all. A really odd niche in that way- Capcom’s biggest series with millions of players that are either all-in on it for months or not. I guess it’s closer to MMOs in that way- you’re either in head-first or you aren’t :D

Still have a ton of backlog to get through and there’s quite a few upcoming games that have my attention, but right now, in particular order:

  • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  • Super Smash Brothers Ultimate
  • NEO: The World Ends With You
  • Monster Hunter Rise
  • Super Mario Odyssey
  • Celeste
  • Kirby and the Forgotten Lands
  • Baba Is You
  • Slay the Spire
  • Into The Breach
  • The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  • Astral Chain
  • Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
  • Octopath Traveler
  • Overcooked 2
  • Untitled Goose Game
  • Mechstermination Force
  • Ring Fit Adventure
Some games I haven’t played but think have a shot at usurping positions on this list:
  • Undertale
  • Luigi’s Mansion 3
  • What The Golf?!
  • A Monster’s Expedition
  • Disco Elysium - The Final Cut
  • Atelier Ryza
  • Shin Megami Tensei V
  • A Short Hike
  • Octopath Traveler 2
  • Triangle Strategy
  • Passpartout 2
  • Chained Echoes
  • Nier Automata
  • Sifu
  • 13 Sentinels - Aegis Rim
  • Sea of Stars
  • Super Mario Wonder
  • Dave The Diver
  • Eiyuden Chronicle

Your post made me realize i missed MHGU lol, i went and edited it in.

And yeah, i think there is a certain threshold that you pass, and it becomes the most addicting game on the planet. My first games were world and iceborne, and the first time i beat them i didn't really understood the game or the mechanics at all so it was just a once and done type of deal, it wasn't until i started playing GU where i finally understood all the mechanics and it instantly became an addiction, the game just intertwines two of the most addictive feelings in games, improving mechanically and bigger numbers.

I’m only doing ten because twenty is too darn many

1. Metroid Dread
2. Pokémon Legends Arceus
3. Paper Mario The Origami King
4. Super Mario Odyssey
5. Breath of the Wild
6. Pokémon Let’s Go
7. Link’s Awakening 2019
8. Mario Golf Super Rush
9. Luigi’s Mansion 3
10. Metroid Prime Remastered

This inspired me to make a top 12 group on my Switch. Why 12? Because that's two rows that fit on screen.

So here it is
  1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  2. Animal Crossing: New Horizons
  3. Super Mario Odyssey
  4. Shin-chan: Me and the Professor on Summer Vacation The Endless Seven Day Journey
  5. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
  6. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy
  7. The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles
  8. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD
  9. A Short Hike
  10. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
  11. Famicom Detective Club: The Missing Heir (accepting the nom for both)
  12. Yoshi's Crafted World
Honourable mentions in the order I notice them on my mosaic.
  • Pikmin 4
  • Ring Fit Adventure
  • Portal
  • Manifold Garden
  • Miitopia
  • Paper Mario: The Origami King
  • L'il Gator Game
  • Luigi's Mansion 3
  • Xenoblade Chronicles 2
  • Picross S5 (accepting the mention for all Picross S games)
  • Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
  • Captain Toad Treasure Tracker

Tier 1: Added to my All-Timer list
1. Cuphead - It's 2D action-platforming perfection as a long time fan of Mega Man games
2. SMTV - Over-the-top style, incredible (and challenging) battles. Made me discover that I love SMT.
3. Metroid Dread - 1A & 1B with Hollow Knight as my fave Metroidvania
4. Celeste - Probably the best pure 2D platformer I've played
5. Slay the Spire - Opened me up to a completely new genre of rogue-like deckbuilders, which I never would have expected being into

Tier 2: Just on the cusp of being all-time faves
6. Fell Seal - Best FFT-like I've played since the original FFT, my all-time fave.
7. Mario Odyssey - New king as my fave 3D platformer
8. A Hat in Time - Super charming 3D platformer that I actually prefer over Odyssey in some ways
9. Pokemon Violet - I can tolerate the performance issues for the really fun world it created and pretty epic adventure (loved the sci-fi Area Zero finale). This pretty much succeeds in what kid-me envisioned for the future after playing Pokemon Red/Blue.
10. Triangle Strategy - Between this and Fell Seal, Switch was incredible for FFT-style SRPGs

Tier 3: Great entries, memorable experiences
11. Pokemon Shield - Probably my favorite Pokemon until Violet came out. I put way too many hours into online battles/raids lol.
12. Fire Emblem: The Three Houses - FE is probably my favorite franchise and Switch did it justice with 2 great entries.
13. Monster Hunter Stories 2 - Outdoes Pokemon at their own formula in a lot of ways. Loved the battle animations.
14. Kirby and the Forgotten Land - Kirby's first foray into 3D was an incredible success to me. Post-apocalyptic vibes was a nice touch, epic finale.
15. Fire Emblem: Engage - I like the maps and battle system way better in Engage than 3H, but the Somniel interludes dragged it down and the final few chapters were a slog.
16. Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening - I bounced off of BOTW, but LA's was the traditional Zelda experience I was looking for. Great refresh of a classic.
17. Dicey Dungeons - Following the eye-opening experience of Slay the Spire, DD further solidified my addiction to this newly-discovered genre.
18. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 - I'm stunned a game of this quality is only #18 on my list. Incredible story, incredible world, it's a JRPG masterclass.

Tier 4: Solid/fun games
19. Hades - Beat Hades on my 10th run. Got lots of fun out of it, but didn't get completely absorbed like I know many did.
20. Octopath Traveler - Great new JRPG IP with clever battle/job system and influential art design. Looking forward to playing OT2 at some point.
21. The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles - Not really big on visual novel-ish games, but TGAA was just too damn charming to put down.
22. The Last Campfire - Individual puzzles were a little too easy, but it's greater than the sum of its parts. Got sucked into its world.
23. Carrion - Funny and competent take on the Metroidvania formula where you are the monster.
24. Ori and the Blind Forest - Platforming segments were hit or miss, still looking forward to trying its sequel which seems to address my few issues.
25. Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion - Silly Zelda-like with fun post-apocalyptic story.
26. Gato Roboto - Bite-sized metroidvania with GB nostalgia and an adorable cat protagonist.
27. Inside - Not as good as its Limbo predecessor in terms of the puzzles, but still an engrossing, dark thriller.
28. Nexomon Extinction - Indie pokemon, nothing great, but still a fun adventure that scratched an itch.
29. Cosmic Star Heroine - Pretty competent indie take on futuristic cyberpunk Chrono Trigger. Looking forward to Zeboyd's new game.

Tier 5: So-so
30. Pokemon Shining Pearl - Honestly, probably would prefer to play the original. Not bad, but a meh remake, especially in terms of the graphics/art style.
31. Pokemon Legends: Arceus - Interesting concept and new ideas, but ultimately bored of the actual battles. Violet built off this and made the Pokemon game I actually wanted.
32. Doki Doki Plus - Not really that into visual novels, but the psychological thriller/horror twist made me intrigued. Worth the time.
33. Donut County - It was pretty dumb, tbh, but still short and frictionless enough that I finished.

Tier 6: Notable drops
  • Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Controversial I know. I recognize it for being an excellent game and why other consider it the GOAT, but it's just not what I want in a Zelda experience. Dungeons are the draw for me and the overworld is usually my least favorite part, so you can see why I bounced off BOTW. Still got an enjoyable 10 or so hours out of it.
  • Tactics Ogre Reborn - As you can tell from my list, I love FFT. I was looking forward to TO but the cards put me off. A rather small nitpick, I know, but I just couldn't get over it.
  • Persona 5 Royal - Maybe I'll pick this one up again, but after how much I loved SMTV, I was super excited to try this out (never played SMT or Persona before SMTV). It was just too much talking and anime high school stuff for my taste.
  • Nier: Automata - Honestly, I loved what I've played from it. Something came up and I had to put it on hold and never got back to it, partly because I feel like I have to relearn it at this point.
  • Paper Mario: Origami King - Super charming (I loved the singing trees bit), but the battle system lost me. Really looking forward to TTYD remake though.
  • Mario Rabbids 1 + 2 - Played a large chunk of both, but just never finished. Really enjoyed them both though, maybe 1 more since I thought the battles were more challenging. 2 has a better streamlined experience though.
  • Live A Live - I dropped it after finishing the single character campaigns. Honestly one of the worst JRPG experiences I've had, I'm stunned this seemed to be held in such high regard. Aside from a couple, the character stories are so basic and boring. The battle system is crap. Some of the design decisions should have been updated, but they kept it true to the original at its own detriment.

Some games are interchangable, but the top 3 are probably going to be my top 3 games on the system when all is said and done (debating on which one is 1 and 2 all the time though). I left a lot of great games outside of this list that easily could have been here but in the end.. with a great system like the Switch some will have to be left aside :>

Switch has been my favorite game system of all time, no other Nintendo library comes close to the sheer amount of top tier games. Looking forward to another year or so of Switch before moving on to next :>
