Fun Club LIST THREAD!!! Given that we know the Nintendo Switch's finalized library, what are your top 20 games on the Nintendo Switch?

Since 2017, I've been cataloguing every game I play and beat, and keeping track of a running ranking that I update once per year.

Keep in mind this is a ranking that includes all games available on the Nintendo Switch - third party, ports, remasters, indies, multiplats, all are welcome!

What is your current Top 20? Here is mine:

My personal top 20 Nintendo Switch games

1. Xenoblade Chronicles 2
2. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
3. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
4. Dark Souls: Remastered
5. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
6. Metroid Dread
7. Hollow Knight
8. Pikmin 4
9. Pokémon Scarlet
10. Pikmin 3 Deluxe
11. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 Re-Boot Camp
12. Trials of Mana
13. Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle
14. Pokémon Legends: Arceus
15. Metroid Prime Remastered
16. Super Mario Odyssey
17. New Pokémon Snap
18. Hades
19. Xenoblade Chronicles 3
20. Triangle Strategy

Analysis of my own Top 20

The hardest part of this list was ranking games with vastly different play times.
Overall, I think I tend to prioritize shorter games with higher bursts of enjoyment over longer-lasting experiences that keep me coming back from addiction.

For example, I have only played through Hollow Knight one time, but it remains in my top 10 games.
It sits above titles in which I have hundreds of hours, such as Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 and Pokémon Scarlet.
In fact, I have over 600 hours in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and that game didn't even crack this list!

Another thing that correlates with the above observation is that it's clear that I prefer games with a high level of difficulty.
I believe I get the most out of games that have high risks and high rewards, challenging combat, and deep exploration.

I think what I've learned from this is that time spent in a game does not correlate with how highly regarded it is to me, and my favorite games are those that are challenging and involve strategy and exploration.

These honorable mentions had their place in my Top 20 for a considerable amount of time, but eventually had to fall off due to the sheer amount of quality in the library. Each of the following games is extremely special to me in their own way.

Paper Mario: The Origami King
Octopath Traveler
Octopath Traveler 2
Fire Emblem Engage
Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Slay the Spire
Into the Breach
Wargroove
Rime
Astral Chain
Splatoon 2

Purely based on games I played on the Switch (so discounting multiplatform titles I played elsewhere but also got a Switch release) I came up with a top 20:

1. Pikmin 3 Deluxe
2. Wandersong
3. Tears of the Kingdom
4, Breath of the Wild
5. Eastward
6. New Pokemon Snap
7. Pikmin 4
8. Stardew Valley
9. Darkside Detective: A Fumble in the Dark
10. A Short Hike
11. Animal Crossing New Horizons
12. Baba is You
13. Yoku's Island Express
14. Kirby and the Forgotten Lands
15. Paper Mario Origami King
16. Untitled Goose Game
17. Hades
18. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
19. Ring Fit Adventure
20. What the Golf?!

All great games honestly, and some indies that could have squeaked in like Wilmot's Warehouse and Celeste. Just a fun little machine, definitely became my home for indies for a good while. If I had to analyse it any further I'd probably so I really like colour that pops and tend towards games with more relaxing vibes.

Did I miss a beat RE: finalized library- is there not a chance of Jan announcements for first half of year, or overlap? (disregarding possible cross gen)

Top 20:
1. Xenoblade Chronicles 3
2. Xenoblade Chronicles 2
3. Mario Odyssey
4. Fire Emblem: Three Houses
5. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
6. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
7. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
8. Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition
9. Metroid Dread
10. Pikmin 4
11. Splatoon 2
12. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
13. Metroid Prime Remastered
14. Pokémon Legends Arceus
15. F-Zero 99 (split between Tetris and F-Zero 99)
16. Luigi's Mansion 3
17. Astral Chain
18. Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
19. Animal Crossing: New Horizons
20. Mario Party Superstars

Honorable Mentions:
Monster Hunter: Rise
Nintendo Switch Sports
Super Mario 3D All Stars
Legend of Zelda Link's Awakening
Kirby and the Forgotten Land
13 Sentinels
Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle
Skyward Sword HD
Captain Toad
Tropical Freeze
Castlevania Advance Collection
Untitled Goose Game

I expect Mario Wonder to make the list, crazy how many good games there are even outside the top 20. Switch is probably my all-time favorite console at this point.

in alphabetical order because i'm bad at ranking things...

Anodyne 2: Return to Dust
Celeste
Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics
Crimzon Clover World Explosion
Dark Souls: Remastered
Deltarune
Disco Elysium
Hollow Knight
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Lucah: Born of a Dream
moon
Mushihimesama
N++
Pikmin 1+2 (though feel free to pretend this says "4" if 1+2 is cheating)
Rain World
Splatoon 3
Super Mario Odyssey
Theatrhythm Final Bar Line
Thumper
Tunic

a few of those i played on another platform first but still played on switch at some point. honorary mentions to The House in Fata Morgana, Baba Is You, Kentucky Route Zero, Ghost Trick, Monster Hunter Rise, Astral Chain, Ring Fit Adventure, Rolling Gunner, probably some other stuff I can't think of rn. my self-analysis is that i like games that are good and fun

that said I'm sure there are gonna be plenty more games still going to be announced for it; small games that would never be in a direct plus stuff that will inevitably be cross-generation

This is only games I actually played on the switch, not counting multi platform games that I've played on other platforms. It was really hard limiting the list to 20, for me all of these games would be 9/10 at least. Really speaks to how good the Switch library is.

As my experience with the Switch was mostly defined by Nintendo published games and indies, my top 20 is reflective of that.

5. Super Mario Odyssey

0
  1. Zelda Bread of the While
  2. DOOM Eternal
  3. DOOM 2016
  4. Final Fantasy IX
  5. Ys VIII
  6. Metroid Dread
  7. Pikmin 4
  8. Xenoblade 3
  9. Metroid Prime Remastered
  10. Fire Emblem Three Houses
  11. Bayonetta 2
  12. Xenoblade 2
  13. Shin Megami Tensei V
  14. Xenoblade 1
  15. The Witcher 3
  16. BioShock 1
  17. Dragon Quest XI
  18. Bayonetta
  19. Child of Light
  20. Astral Chain
It's hard to make a proper ranking, but I think such a list would more or less like that. It's also evident I've played lots of Switch games by this point because I feel like I'm missing LOOOOTS of others I also like. Shin Megami Tensei III, Assassin's Creed IV, DOOM 64, The Wonderful 101, Borderlands 2, Final Fantasy VII, Octopath Traveler, Rayman Legends, Super Mario Odyssey, Bayonetta 3, Hellblade, Ys IX, Crysis... I could go on.

In no specific order, but all first played on the switch, and if we dont get a suprise, i dont think it will change much till we play Prime 4 on Switch 2 =P:
  • Puyo Puyo Tetris (the demo alone was probably as much as the game)
  • Octopath travler
  • kirby forgotten land
  • iconoclast
  • Hollow Knight
  • metroid dread
  • what remains of Edith Finch
  • BotW
  • TotK (honestly, i was not sure if it has to be in this list, it feels like all it adds is already there with BotW for me, but in the end, i have to be honest, with how i devoured it, it still has to be here)
  • Nier Automata
  • Enter the Gungeon
  • Cuphead
  • Pokemon legends Arceus
  • SMT 5 (this one was also tough. i had to drop it 2 times. it has such highs in many aspects (soundtrack, visuals), but probably the worst story i had in an jrpg ...ever? if i can call it a story. at least compared to JRPGs that took a quarter of the time ...)
  • Slay the Spire
  • Smash Ultimate
  • Ori and the blind forest
  • Katana Zero
  • Mario Odyssey
  • Picross S 1/2 (its picross, confort food)

Runner Up:
  • Thumper (you have to experience it. i hope for an update when swtich 2 comes with more effects)
  • Baba is You * (was almost in my top list, instead of picross or TotK)
  • Super Mario Bros 35 (liked the twist and had more fun then i ever had with the original mario bros)
  • Axiom Verge (great game, but i did not see it as so great as people positioned it)
  • Minit (such a great experience, if you like zelda, but want it as an evening snack with humor and a twist, take this)
  • Fatum Betula (same as momodora, to small, but unique atmosphere)
  • momodora (great, but just slightly to small scale)
  • hyper light drifter * (played it on pc prior, so does not count)
  • Sakuna of rice and ruin (really charming)
Honorable mentions:
  • snipperclips (such an unique concept, with so much charme)
  • Ys origin (had really a flair you dont have anymore, never played it back then)
  • ori will of the whisps (i found it overall lacking compared to the first one... maybe a second playthrough would help)
  • Tetris 99 (cool idea, but puyo puyo was more fun)
  • Dicey Dungeon (to little variation to finish all rounds, was fun while it lated, great concept)
  • Wizard of legend (fun, but not enough and kinda repetitive)
  • links awakening (its a great game, but missed the surreal atmosphere for me, and the performance + price where damping my enjoyment. to close to the original in content, making it feel slightly stale on first play...)
  • bloodstained (a ton of problems... but it WAS a igavania, the closest to a catlevania we had in years)
  • fast rmx (good fun racing game)
  • Final Fantasy (7-9) (played them on PS1, still as good)
  • Moonlighter (was fine, didnt wow me)
  • Crypt of the NecroDancer (so much fun, but i cant keep my concentration for it)
  • MK 8 (Had it on Wii U, otherwise would be in the top 20)

Still open: Tunic, 13 sentinels, cross code, Octopath Travler 2, pikuniku

Mhm this is a tough one but after some thinking

1. Atelier Sophie 2
2. Dragon Quest XI
3. Xenoblade Chronicles 2
4. Octopath Traveler 2
5. Zelda Tears of the Kingdom
6. Fire Emblem Warriors
7. Blasphemous
8. Gunvolt 3
9. Mario Oddysey
10. Metroid Dread
11. Kirby and the Forgotten lands
12. Ys 8
13. Cross Code
14. Super Robot Wars 30
15. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
16. Astral Chain
17. Mario 3D World
18. Hollow Knight
19. Blaster Master Zero Trilogy
20. Samurai Warriors 5

Honorable mention to the original DQ Trilogy of course

I think it's far from being finalized (i expect some big exclusives even after the successor launch) but neat idea. There are too many direct ports from older generations on Switch, I'll try to include a little as possible.

With older games included:
1- Shin Megami Tensei V
2- Astral Chain
3- Dragon Quest XI S
4- Monster Hunter Rise
5- Fire Emblem Three Houses
6- Kirby and the Forgotten Land
7- Bayonetta 3
8- Bayonetta 2
9- Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom
10- Final Fantasy XII
11- NEO The World Ends With You
12- Smash Ultimate
13- Great Ace Attorney
14- Nier Automata
15- Persona 5 Royal
16- WarioWare DIY
17- Yoshi's Crafted World
18- Klonoa Royal Reverie Collection
19- Immortals Fenyx Rising
20- Triangle Strategy

Oh hey, I also do the thing where I keep track/running rank of pretty much everything I've played. Though I tend to just update it as I finish games and then reassess every so often (it can be a decent cure for insomnia sometimes)

Counting everything playable on Switch (including ports/remasters/remakes/emulation), my current ranking would be
  1. Breath of the Wild
  2. Yoshi's Island
  3. Super Metroid
  4. Tears of the Kingdom
  5. Super Mario Odyssey
  6. Doom 1993
  7. Metroid Prime
  8. Resident Evil 4
  9. Portal 2

  15. Persona 5
  16. Hollow Knight
  17. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  18. Ocarina of Time
  19. Super Mario Sunshine
  20. Rocket League
And then top 20 that were new during the Switch era (i.e. since 2017), just because I think it also makes for a more diverse/interesting list

  1. Breath of the Wild
  2. Tears of the Kingdom
  3. Super Mario Odyssey
  4. Kirby and the Forgotten Land
  5. Metroid Dread
  6. Tetris 99

17. Hollow Knight
18. Xenoblade Chronicles 1
19. Super Mario Maker 2
20. Mario Kart Deluxe

I want to put more... there's a few more first party and lots of third party games I should add... Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Binding of Isaac, Luigi's Mansion, Bloodstained, R-Type Final 2, Gungeon, THPS2, Butnout Paradise, the list goes on and on, Blue Fire, Advance Wars, Nier, Disco Elesium, Persona 5, Xcom, etc, etc Dark Souls, Dragon Quest... Everspace, Streets of Rage 4, TMNT, honestly so much videogames on this thing! lol

I refrained from unreleased games, so Mario Wonder will probably be amazing, Super Mario RPG, and maaaybe a couple others... but they aren't even out yet.

I'm the oddball that was critical of BotW, even though it was a stepping stone to TotK... which I adore. I didn't care that much about Mario Odyssey. 3D Marios changed from a platformers to adventure collectathons since the N64. I'm just not as interested... I'd put Blue Fire in the top 20 before Mario Odyssey. It was fine... I played it and had fun.

I have been so impressed by the Switch. I didn't even own a wii or wii:u. As an old gameboy fan, I was attracted to the form factor, and the physical own forever carts(most of my library is physical). I got so much more than I expected from this machine. I'm honestly blown away

Oooh, this is a tough one. I just love the Switch library - probably my favorite ever. Of the 120-ish Switch games I've played...

  1. Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
  2. Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  3. Fire Emblem: Three Houses
  4. Animal Crossing: New Horizons
  5. Super Mario Odyssey
  6. Luigi's Mansion 3
  7. Metroid Dread
  8. Pokemon Scarlet
  9. Stardew Valley
  10. Kirby and the Forgotten Land
  11. Pokemon Legends: Arceus
  12. Hades
  13. Fire Emblem Engage
  14. Dragon Quest XI S
  15. Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
  16. Super Mario 3D All Stars
  17. Metroid Prime Remastered
  18. Zelda: Skyward Sword HD
  19. Octopath Traveler
  20. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

0
Finally, a list thread!

  1. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
  2. Tears of the Kingdom (haven't finished, but this game made BOTW obsolete for me)
  3. Hollow Knight
  4. Metroid Dread
  5. Pikmin 4
  6. TMNT: Shredder's Revenge
  7. Mario Party Superstars (still cannot believe they made a game for us losers who still play the N64 classics)
  8. The Messenger
  9. Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove
  10. Kirby and the Forgotten Land
  11. Link's Awakening
  12. Clubhouse Games
  13. Return of the Obra Dinn
  14. Super Mario Odyssey
  15. Into the Breach
  16. Shovel Knight: Pocket Dungeon
  17. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  18. Pikmin 3 Deluxe
  19. 3D World + Bowser's Fury
  20. Splatoon 2 (specifically the Octo Expansion; I can take or leave the rest of Splatoon 2)
Of course, a lot of my favorite memories with the Switch involve playing older games through NSO or the different collections released by third party publishers, but including those would probably be a little too dicey for me.

1. Breath of the Wild
2. Mario Odyssey
3. CrossCode
4. XC2
5. Tears of the Kingdom (not sure on this one but it didn't have as much impact for me as the first 4 despite being probably a strictly better version of BoTW)
6. Hades
7. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
8. SMTV
9. NEO TWEWY
10. Hollow Knight
11. Metroid Dread
12. Astral Chain
13. Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin
14. Pokemon Legends: Arceus
15. Pokemon Scarlet
16. Ys 8
17. Pikmin 4
18. Fire Emblem: Three Houses
19. Rune Factory 4 Special
20. Bravely Default 2

Honorable Mentions (no order)
Mario + Rabbids
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity
Monster Sanctuary
Immortals: Fenyx Rising
Bug Fables
Bayonetta 3
Monster Hunter Rise
Dark Souls Remastered
Divinity Original Sin 2
Octopath Traveler
Triangle Strategy
Ace Attorney Trilogy

Ok I could probably go on on honorable mentions for a while. This top 20 was honestly fairly hard to decide since I don't rank games that regularly. Might have missed something here and there too, and this list is pretty tentative and could change literally as soon as I post it, but it seems fairly solid to me for now.

In short, it's all weeb shit

doing mine from lowest to highest, for dramatic effect!

20. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
19. Animal Crossing New Horizons
18. DELTARUNE Chapter 1 & 2
17. Nintendo Switch Sports
16. Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
15. Super Nintendo Entertainment System - Nintendo Switch Online
14. Nintendo Entertainment System - Nintendo Switch Online
13. Spyro Reignited Trilogy
12. Tetris 99
11. Sonic Origins
10. Kirby and the Forgotten Land
09. Splatoon 2
08. We Love Katamari Reroll
07. Katamari Damacy Reroll
06. Sonic Mania
05. Pikmin 4
04. Splatoon 3
03. F-ZERO 99
02. Pikmin 3 Deluxe
01. Nintendo 64 - Nintendo Switch Online

Honorable Mention: YouTube

some notes:
  • Youtube is my second most used application! Being able to switch (heh) between my sister's YouTube account and mine so easily has been great
  • NSO is extraordinarily underrated. Nintendo 64 is my highest rated not just because of the strength of the games, but because a friend and I played Super Mario 64 together while passing the "controller" back and forth
  • Pikmin 3 Deluxe is still the best Pikmin game on Switch in my opinion. It has my preferred aiming solution and I've put a ton of time into it
  • F-ZERO 99 just came out but it's one of the best games ever made
  • I have complex relationship with Splatoon, but that didn't stop me from putting in like 800 hours between both games. 3 makes 2 seem dramatically worse, especially with the latest two maps
  • I love classic Sonic, sorry.
  • We Love Katamari is probably better than Katamari Damacy but I've played a lot of the latter
  • I grew up with Spyro 1 and 3, and I really enjoy the remakes
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is hurt in my mind by the low quality of the DLC. I know that's unfair but that's just my impression of the game looking back

  • NSO is extraordinarily underrated. Nintendo 64 is my highest rated not just because of the strength of the games, but because a friend and I played Super Mario 64 together while passing the "controller" back and forth

NSO has been awesome. I'm not going to put it on my list because it's hard to quantify fairly, but it would be near the top. The Switch has been a really fantastic system for retro gaming. This may be my finalized list for now, but there are still so many games I want to play:

1. Final Fantasy VIII Remastered
2. Sega Genesis Classics
3. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
4. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
5. Disco Elysium
6. Doom (2016)
7. Kirby and the Forgotten Land
8. Super Smash Bros Ultimate
9. What the Golf?
10. Undertale
11. Tetris 99
12. Conduct Together!
13. Octopath Traveler II
14. Super Mario Odyssey
15. Art Sqool
16. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
17. Animal Crossing: New Horizons
18. Cruis'n Blast
19. Fall Guys
20. Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition

Analysis - I think Nintendo has offered some best all-time entries in many of their franchises, which is represented here. Zelda, Kirby, 3D Mario, Smash and Animal Crossing... I would make the argument that they all have their best entries on the Switch. There are some silly games here too. I appreciate humor and sharing games like that with my kids. There are some great RPGs and Indie gems on the system, goes without saying. The odd duck on this list is Doom 2016. I got the Doom Slayers Collection on the recommendation of a friend and was really happily surprised how much I loved it. I feel lucky to have played all of these games. The Switch has such a wide library that it's easy to feel a little bit of unique pride in your collection, like hey, these are the awesome experiences I've found. What about you? Which ones are the same? Which have been different? What does that say about our preferences and experiences? I would consider most of the games on my list to be 5/5 games. Fall Guys isn't perfect, but we love it anyways! Lol

Lol, this challenge is going to be difficult for me, but I'll update this once I've decided which of my babies to sacrifice.

Edit: that was my quick gut ranking.

I'm only going to mention games I've beat and only ones I've played on Switch, which means no 3D World (or Bowser's Fury) despite it being one of my favorite games of all time. I'm also not going to include Metroid Prime Remastered just yet, couple of things that soured my replay of it that I don't think would bother me as much on another replay when I'm already reacquainted with it.

  1. Monster Hunter Rise
  2. Metroid Dread
  3. Pikmin 3 Deluxe
  4. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
  5. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  6. Touhou Luna Nights
  7. Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition
  8. Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition
  9. Kirby and the Forgotten Land
  10. Sonic Mania
  11. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy
  12. Castlevania Anniversary Collection
  13. The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles
  14. Castlevania Advance Collection
  15. Hollow Knight
  16. Axiom Verge
  17. Super Mario Odyssey
  18. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
  19. Splatoon 3
  20. Paper Mario: The Origami King
I'll be honest, after Axiom Verge the list became harder and I had to start padding. This would be way easier if I could convince myself to put specific games from a collection here, but I can't. I think Tears has the potential to be a top 2 game, but the last few story missions really soured it for me from like a 10 to a low 9/high 8 (along with some other minor problems). Mario Kart 8 Deluxe would usually be in the top 3, it's one of my favorite games of all time, but I'm just tired of it at this point. I'm ready for Mario Kart 9!

I'm excited to revisit this list and update it when I finish Luigi's Mansion 3, Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age, Valkyria Chronicles 4, and Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin, all of which I think have a good shot to make it onto the list. I'm also excited to replay Tears and Metroid Prime and see where they land next!

Gonna restrict myself to what I consider "New 1st party(ish) experiences". Essentially boiling it down to new games, remakes, and expansions that I consider to be their own thing and can grade separately. Only counting Switch exclusives here, no ports or remasters. This includes borderline franchises like Bayonetta and Mario + Rabbids, stuff that technically isn't 1st party but is never gonna leave the console.

Using the same grading scale that I use in the 2023 Completed Games Thread (which I haven't updated in a while, oops) I'm gonna cheat and rank everything I've played. Purple is S Tier (amazing), Blue is A Tier (great), Green is B Tier (good), Yellow is C Tier (meh), Orange is D Tier (bad). Notable games that I have yet to put a grade on are the following:
  • Bayonetta Origins
  • Bayonetta 3
  • Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope
  • ARMS
  • Kirby Star Allies
  • Advance Wars 1+2: Re-boot Camp
  • Nintendo Switch Sports
  • Anything Pokemon related
  • Most of the smaller games
Ok, with that long ass prelude out of the way, this is my current 1st party ranking for Nintendo's 1st party output this generation.
  1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  2. Xenoblade Chronicles 3
  3. Xenoblade Chronicles 2
  4. Fire Emblem: Three Houses

The dedication here is beautiful! And I agree with a lot of your picks.

Btw, you actually reminded me about Super Mario Maker 2. that game was sooooo goooooood. I have a hard time rating online based games once their hype cycle is dead unfortunately, but it was the first game I truly loved on the Switch since Breath of the Wild at the time (and to a lesser extent, Smash). I got so addicted to it and put in 100+ hours in like a month or two. Fantastic times.

Appreciate it. I've kept track of this stuff for a while, so it's always fun to talk about. It's more in-depth than what I listed (each tier splits into a + and - tier as well, I.E. A+/A/A-) but that's harder to convey through a forum post and the simpler tiers reflect my thoughts well enough. It's definitely skewed towards A tier, but that isn't terribly surprising considering that I'm gonna gravitate towards the better received games first and foremost. Guessing it'll even out a bit more once I start diving in to the lesser acclaimed games in the library.

I got a lot of mileage out of it too, even though I barely touched the level creator. Have fond memories of playing a bunch of random garbage with a few friends in local co-op and trying to brute force our way to a win, especially in the uber-hard speedrunning levels that were very much designed with singleplayer in mind lol

Analysis of my own Top 20

These honorable mentions had their place in my Top 20 for a considerable amount of time, but eventually had to fall off due to the sheer amount of quality in the library. Each of the following games is extremely special to me in their own way.

Paper Mario: The Origami King
Octopath Traveler
Octopath Traveler 2
Fire Emblem Engage
Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Slay the Spire
Into the Breach
Wargroove
Rime
Astral Chain
Splatoon 2
, Super Mario Odyssey, Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom, Luigi Mansion 3, Super Smash Bro Ultimate, Metroid Prime Remastered,Metroid Dread,Kirby and the Forgotten Land e Monster Hunter Rise

What do you mean by we know it's finalised library? Games will still come out on Switch 1 for quite a while even after NG, no?
I mean, even if we did know its finalized library nobody here has actually played everything in it

I took this as more of a "the switch is almost done, let's remember all the games it has" thread

edit: I say this as someone whom was himself tempted to say "erm ackshually they're gonna shadowdrop a new rhythm heaven in february"

I'm probably forgetting quite a few games but here we go:

1. Tears of the Kingdom
2. Breath of the Wild
3. Fire Emblem Three Houses
4. Super Mario Odyssey
5. Persona 5 Royal
6. Xenoblade Chronicles 3
7. Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition
8. Bayonetta 2
9. Animal Crossing New Horizons
10. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
11. Undertale
12. Xenoblade Chronicles 2
13. Tetris Effect Connected
14. Dragon Quest XI S
15. Pokemon Legends Arceus
16. Splatoon 3
17. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
18. Kirby and the Forgotten Land
19. A Short Hike
20. Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury

Honorable mentions: Super Mario Bros 35 (RIP), Dead Cells, Fire Emblem Engage, Vampire Survivors, Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection

A special shoutout goes to everyone who has A Short Hike in their top 20, you are good people 👍

As OP has said, I think it's highly unlikely from here on out for there to be more than a handful of notable Switch games. Metroid Prime 4 and Silksong don't have release dates, but you've got to imagine that everything else that hasn't been announced is being prepped for the Succ.

From here on out, I expect to enjoy games like Gunbrella, Plucky Squire, Metal Slug Tactics, Eiyuden Hundred Heroes, Star Ocean 2, Chained Echoes, Sea of Stars, DQ3HD, and Unicorn Overlord, but I don't know if any of those games will make my top 20.

I am technically keeping track of this, but I'm going to take a stab at it from the heart to keep things interesting :)

Given some qualifiers...

  • Obviously there is recency bias, especially in a world where Nintendo is presently giving me exactly what I want between totk/p4/Mario Wonder.
  • I am not including all ports here as I am too platform agnostic at this stage to really do so correctly - just ones I played on Switch
  • I expect many titles yet to release to take a spot:
    • Mario Bros. Wonder
    • Sonic Superstars (I won't get it on Switch probably)
    • Metroid Prime 4
    • WarioWare Move It
  • I also expect many titles early in progress / backlogged to take a spot:
    • Metroid Prime: Remastered
    • Fire Emblem: Three Houses
    • M+R: Sparks of Hope
    • Spiritfarer
    • Ni No Kuni
    • Chicory

EDIT: Oops I made a mistake using stars, markdown is f-ing with some of these... I'll fix later lol

* Switch to Me - I only included games that define the Switch to me– so if the game is "home" on another console, it's not here. For example, Pikmin 3 Deluxe is not included even though I probably played it more than I did back on Wii U, because I found the Wii U experience to be superior. On the other hand, Mario Kart 8 quickly felt at 'home' on the Switch to me, further cemented after the addition of the Booster Pass. Another example would be DKC:TF, which I enjoyed on Wii U and never touched on Switch. Sonic Frontiers is also here because I played it first there, even though I've since moved on to the PC port.

** Handheld Gone Hybrid - #4 (Metroid Dread) #7 (Luigi's Mansion 3) and #15 (Pokemon Legends: Arceus) stand out to me as remarkable steps forward for their series after their future being uncertain due to the collapse of traditional Nintendo handhelds. All three of them took massive steps forward for their franchises which I am so grateful for. In some cases, this is historically handheld series going back to "console" level as well.
Missing in Action: Rhythm Heaven

*** Quirky Nintendo Lives!!! - My favorite side of Nintendo will always be the "who is this for?!" titles, which always have the chance of hitting it big. Ring fit is a perfect example of this– next to Labo, it clearly "won" and broke through to a larger audience. These titles will always be the kids art I pin to my refrigerator no matter how ugly it is (i.e. purchase), because I am proud they are expressing themselves. That reminds me, I need to buy Game Builder Garage and Switch Sports still...
Honorable Mention: ARMS. Missing in Action: Nintendogs + Ferrets.

**** A New Generation - the games that finally took a big step forward. Whether it be a literal new generation of games across the industry such as Botw, a "they're finally trying again" with Mario Tennis Aces, or somewhere in between like Kirby finally going 3D.... these games have my heart and demonstrate how innovation is ingrained in Nintendo from end to end.
Missing in Action: MP4, 2D Zelda.

***** Indies, Dahling. - the Switch wouldn't be the Switch without indies. Nowadays it's easy to take for granted and Game Pass and PC steal thunder for me, but I imagine once the Switch 2 is out I'll default back to the eShop for most of such purchases (and duplicate purchases for those I love even if they're on subscriptions.)

****** F*cking Finally / Woah - "this really happened???" I've played it but I'm still recovering.

Metroid Prime Remastered

Mario Odyssey
Super Smash Bros Ultimate
Super Mario 3D World / Bower’s Fury
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
Bayonetta 2
Cuphead
Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove
Okami HD
Super Meat Boy
Celeste
Super Mario Maker 2
No More Heroes 3
Splatoon 2
SteamWorld Dig 2
Doom

Super Mario Bros Wonder will probably be top 10…

This is a tough one because I have several games that would rank extremely high, tons of collections that kind of muddy the waters and obviously all of NSO. I'll try to keep it limited to games that I have first finished on Switch or ports/remasters/remakes that were sufficiently different from their original release.
  1. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
  2. Monster Hunter Rise
  3. Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury
  4. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 + Future Redeemed
  5. Into the Breach
  6. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
  7. Return of the Obra Dinn
  8. Celeste
  9. Hollow Knight
  10. Pikmin 4
  11. Katana ZERO
  12. Ring Fit Adventure
  13. Metroid Dread
  14. Kirby and the Forgotten Land
  15. Splatoon 2 + Octo-Expansion
  16. Fire Emblem: Three Houses
  17. Astral Chain
  18. Hades
  19. Slay the Spire
  20. ARMS
This was a bit quick and dirty but I think it comes close. Some notes:
  • I could have left 3D World out of this ranking but the speed-boost and Bowser's Fury contributed a great deal to my enjoyment over the original so its inclusion feels justified.
  • Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey would have easily made the top 20 but I ultimately decided against their inclusion simply because I kept thinking about how much I prefer TotK and 3D World respectively. Not a knock on the games though.
  • Pikmin 4's placement I'm somewhat uncertain about. I like large parts of it a great deal but I also think that P3D is the better game.
  • I generally think that Splatoon 3 is better than 2 but Octo-Expansion is fantastic, which pushes it slightly over the edge. Hopefully Side Order is good enough to change this.
  • I would have put Three Houses higher but I've soured a little on it due to replays (I'm doing another one now lol).
  • ARMS is a big outlier in some ways but it's such an essential Switch experience to me that I can't help but have it in my top 20.
  • I almost put The Great Ace Attorney Collection on there but I'm not quite done with the second half. But I can already tell that it's going to make my top 20.
  • I have such a large JRPG backlog that once I actually manage to properly finish them I can throw this entire list out.
10 random omissions (unranked)
  • Pikmin 3 Deluxe
  • Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
  • Splatoon 3
  • Resident Evil 4
  • Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age
  • Tetris 99
  • Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection
  • The Wonderful 101
  • Theatrhythm Final Bar Line
  • Nintendo Switch Sports

My top 20 is strange, i'm putting only exclusive (even temporary exclusives) 1st and 3rd party games but no ports or remastered with an exception for remakes of games never released outside of japan. no indies too since they're not usually exclusives.

1/2 Zelda Breath of the wild/tears of the kingdom (I don't really know which one I prefer, right now I might give a slight edge to Tears of the Kingdom)
3 Xenoblade 3 + future redeemed
4 Super Mario Odyssey
5 Dragon quest XI S
6 Fire emblem threehouses
7 Kirby and the forgotten land
8 LiveAlivE
9 Metroid Dread
10 Monster hunter rise + Sunbreak
11 Xenoblade 2 + Torna
12 Fire emblem Engage
13 Splatoon 2 + octo expansion
14 Splatoon 3
15 Astral chain
16 Bayonetta 3
17 Pokemon Legends Arceus
18 Paper Mario Origami King
19 Luigi's Mansion 3
20 Kirby star allies

No Pikmin 4 yet since I still need to play it, I can see mario wonder getting to the top 10 easily and I don't know about Mario RPG
Shoutouts to Link's awakening hd which is still a masterpiece (best game on gb), Super mario 3d world + bowser fury which is a port but also the best mario game and Neo The world ends with you that is incredible but also not an exclusive so that's why it's not on the list.

1. Breath of the Wild
2. Tears of the Kingdom
3. Fire Emblem: Three Houses
4. Hollow Knight
5. The Great Ace Attorney Duology
6. Super Mario Odyssey
7. Xenoblade 3
8. Hades
9. Disco Elysium
10. Chicory
11. Omori
12. Metroid Dread
13. The House in Fata Morgana
14. Ikenfell
15. Pokémon Legends Arceus
16. Kirby and the Forgotten Land
17. Celeste
18. Wandersong
19. Baba is You
20. A Monster’s Expidition

Things I noticed making the list:
  • The Switch is the perfect console for me because all my play time tends to be Nintendo games and indies anyway
  • it’s kinda hard getting into what counts as a Switch game to me and what doesn’t. I basically settled for games from this generation only as long as they released on Switch (including stuff like GAA which didn’t release internationally until this gen)
  • I’m still really unsure what I rank higher out of the two 3D Zelda’s.
  • Pikmin 4 is a massive blind spot for me currently. I’m definitely getting to it eventually, just now sure when that will be
