...more to the point of the thread, I second the Nintendo e-Reader. Two different versions in Japan (one without a link cable port!), no release in Europe, the release of games that just ended up as cartridge releases instead, a promising line of Game & Watch games on cards that only ever got one release, all the best stuff never coming out of Japan because the thing barely sold over here but that lack of content in and of itself contributing to the lack of sales...its a beautiful mess. Love my little e-Reader.

Nah I actually think the handle makes sense. The GameCube was, in the grand scheme of things, an awkward size for a console. It was too big for most people to one-hand it, but was two small to two-hand it. Something like a Playstation 2 or Xbox, you were gonna pick that up with two hands, one on each side. GameCube was light enough that two hands was, weight-wise, overkill and a waste of hand/arm space, but the shape of the console did not lend itself well to picking up with one hand because it was too big in every dimension for one hand to kinda just grab it. Hence: handle.

The handle also served double duty in that it made it so you couldn’t push the console too far back against a wall and damage the power/video cables/receptacles in the back by bending them too far.

The handle was good!

Would you rather these bespoke single-use controllers be made of something non-recyclable?
That makes a lot of sense re. The size
 
Publishing Devil's Third might at first glance be something thought of as hey, they published a third party game when they needed it, makes sense, right?

But Devil's Third.

They published Devil's Third.

What makes it even weirder was that one time where Reggie namedropped it as "a number of new and exciting gamesavailable on the Wii U", and started raddling off, like, Mario, Zelda, Star Fox and.. Devil's Third. All while wearing the poker face of the century.

Devil's Third was a probably never intended as a serious seller, rather more of a way to gain good will with a veteran developer who wasn't previously associated with Nintendo, and signal to other Japanese developers that Nintendo could be beneficial collaborators.

I don't think Nintendo expected Itagaki to basically retire from game development afterwards, so they may have also hoped to foster a longer term relationship with his studio, as part of their attempt to grow their portfolio of action IPs.

I’ll counter the Labo suggestion with just a general question on what their plans were with Labo. I love how well Labo works and the instructions and everything, but the entire way they marketed and sold it made absolutely no sense to me. They created these cardboard accessories that could be used for Mario Kart, one of their most popular games of all time. But rather than provide people with an easy and cheap way to use those accessories, they required you buy a whole set and must have the cart to build anything. It would’ve made 10x more sense to offer a small box that was just a wheel or motorcycle handle and let people download the instructions to build them.
 
And how about that home button with an LED the system doesn't use.
Both Brain Training and Ring Fit make use of this feature. I think the plan was to make it a general notification light, (like the one on 3DS systems) but this end up getting cut late into production, so the LED light stuck.

I think the fact that they updated Super Mario Party to have full online multiplayer, after initially launching with it being limited to a handful of minigames, was pretty weird.

…Mostly because they added it nearly three years after the game came out, with no updates beyond a single stability patch in the interim, and with no prior notice and basically no fanfare beyond a random 10am Twitter post.
 
no way this fucking ruled. you’re not literally always on a train, and if you are you can do it with headphones. it was such an interesting twist when it was used, and a very very neat hardware + software trick. truly a “magic nintendo” moment

I didn't even wanna do it at home tbh. Like I would play at night and would worry that my parents would hear me whisper yelling to myself lol. Until I realized I could just blow on the mic
 
Labo...being made of cardboard.
Labor was an exceptional product. I have seen it "played" by several kids and all were totally into it, and it teaches kids (and adults) some fundamental mechanics.

The whole "why should I pay for cardboard" discussion was ridiculous.

I think that was for testing the netcode of Superstars which was revealed a couple months later.

I remember hoping they'd do the same for Pikmin 3's bingo battle lol

AR functionality on 3DS. What games used that? The built in ones and... Bravely Default? (which is a game that specifically set out to use every single 3DS functionality)
Kid Icarus Uprising did too and had its own cards you could collect. I think it was mostly to have something like Invizimals if that kind of game had taken off, but it's definitely weird in hindsight. (Also Bravely Default mentioned, lets gooo)

Limited digital release of 3D All Stars is still the dumbest bullshit but I don't have to think about that for long and it's also not weird as much as it is shit.

Just one of those guys that would make everything about them. I kept saying what I wanted to do and he just whined about how it didn’t sound fun and was trying to convince people to go do something else with him…while at my house on my birthday, when I didn’t even invite him over.

He also wanted me to help him film a porn movie starring him. I politely declined.

Gonna admit I don't think anyone saw this going this way.
 
Instead of making a GBA standalone game of Four Swords, Nintendo made the oddball behemoth that was Four Swords Adventures, requiring 1-4 GBAs, link cables, and a gamecube to even get multiplayer.

Its a solid singleplayer game, and the fact each player has their own screen is genius like with Kirby and the Amazing Mirror, but why did we need the Gamecube in the equation?
