10. Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics 6,845/906,012

All Switch Top 10. Evergreens falling down back to earth, lull before the Pokemon storm. Maybe a PlayStation game sneaks into Top 30?

Hardware:
Switch family (includes OLED Lite and OG) 94,523 (this week) 439,140 (YTD)
Switch OLED 48,824 (this week) 221,679 (YTD)
PS5 (all varieties) 14,453 (this week) 71,807 (YTD)
Xbox Series 2,267 (this week) 3,053 (YTD)

Switch hardware takes a soft drop. It should ramp up during Pokemon week. PS5 stock seems stable and Xbox stock recovers back to a normal week for it. Good hardware week all around.

Switch hardware actually held on pretty well, considering the post-holiday drop. And anyway, Legends Arceus is coming...

Maybe a PlayStation game sneaks into Top 30?
This will be the interesting bit. Clubhouse at rank 10 is 6K, while PS5 sold 14,453 units this week. Would be eyebrow-raising if PS5 titles can't make the top 30.

Yeah, the threshold should be low enough that something breaks the Top 30. If not your guess is as good as mine for the state of PS in Japan.

@Chris1964 says Arceus is heading for a 2 million unit opening in Japan. It will probably hit 5M WW fast.

to think it was late last year where such a sweep was unheard of. now it's the norm

  • Super Mario 3D World joins the platinum club. (1 million retail)
  • BOTW about to officially join the 2 mill retail club (1.934.551 + 57.424)
  • Clubhouse Games closing in on 1 million retail.

I always wonder, if all those people who bought Mario Party Superstars have friends to play with. You do need friends to play with, even friends with the copy of the game if to be played on handheld. Having friends to play mario Party, something that I have never achieved.

As a teen I played a lot of Mario Party on N64 with friends, so many destroyed analog sticks, so many blisters...

As an adult I don't even bother buying multiplayer titles 😐

Having friends growing up is one difficult thing, convincing them to play something like Mario Party is another. Especially during the "dark edgy teen phase", where boys avoid colorful things like plague.

I always played Mario Party games with my brother but two player is just the half of the fun. Hoping to do a full 4 player MP game someday. Not online, face to face.

It does but playing with randoms is just awful. It takes too long for them to simply throw the dice and all you can do is communicate with that useless stickers. Best way to do online is with friends using Nintendo app voice chat.

Shit, you’re right. There’s really no way to explain the situation other than Japanese gamers not caring about PS.
I wish that certain Japanese developers would see that and just their games on other systems as well (Atlus, hello?). Because it seems that the Playstation isn't big in Japan.

huge missed opportunity for Switch not having native voice chat., plus a messaging or invite system at the OS level Nintendo have so many properties that could benefit from such integration but it seemed like they went out of their way to exclude those features.

I'm not even a huge Multiplayer person myself, but i'd like to drop a note saying hi when i see a friend playing a game or something.

Developers can implement native voice chat on their Switch games if they want, the tech is already available.

Yeah, nothing on PS selling over 1892 copies is a huge yikes.
Between PS4 dying off and PS5 struggling to establish itself, the Switch is enjoying a virtual monopoly in Japan with no serious competition.
The PS brand's been in decline there for some time now, but at this rate they risk becoming irrelevant.

Atlus may have taken a while to get on Switch, but almost everything they've announced recently has been coming to the platform.
Yeah true. I hope they see what kind of goldmine Persona on the Switch would be. But perhaps there are contracts they signed on Persona that can't change that.

PS4 version of Rainbow Six Extraction charted on Tsutuya and Geo trackers so the upcoming week should snap the 30/30 streak.

So why exactly did Mario Party become such a crazy sales juggernaut all of a sudden with Super Mario Party? Mario Party Superstars seems like it's much the same, too. I enjoy Superstars quite a bit and I've had fun playing it with my friends but it's still very much Mario Party as it's always been. Is Mario Party the most prominent example of the mythical "Switch boost"? A software boost driven largely by the hardware itself and less by major changes to the game series (compared to something like Breath of the Wild which had major popular changes to the series)?

I agree. I was on Clubhouse, and I wanted to ask a friend who was online if they wanted to play yahtzee... of course, I couldn't.

Wait, what have they announced recently? All I can think of is that Persona spin off fighting game
Atlus projects from the past two years (Western releases):

17 Jan 2020 - Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE (Switch)
31 March 2020 - Persona 5 Royale (PS4)
13 June 2020 - Persona 4 Golden (PC)
2 July 2020 - Catherin Full Body (Switch)
23 Feb 2021 - Persona 5 Strikers (Switch/PS4/PC)
25 May 2021 - SMT III HD Remaster (Switch/PS4/PC)
11 November 2021 - SMTV (Switch)
17 March 2022- Persona 4 Arena Ultimax (Switch/PS4/PC)
12 April 2022 - 13 Sentinels (Switch)

It feels to me like Mario Party is benefiting from a confluence of different things that just happen to have aligned at the right time.

  • Like you've said, they are on Switch, which is such a huge visibility booster for a lot of games.
  • They have returned to the Mario Party 1-8 style gameplay loop, after years of experimentation. Which has mostly been celebrated as a big deal.
  • They now have online play. This can't explain why Super has done so well, since it came to it so late, but maybe a contributing factor currently?
  • They look and sound great. Production values seem much higher for the series in these two games. I think most people can tell too.
  • Streamers in recent years have boosted people's interest in multiplayer card and board games, including bouts of Mario Party.
  • At least initially, people may have been buying up Super Mario Party to have an extra pair of joy-cons. But this doesn't explain the non-bundled copy doing most the legwork(unless I've misunderstood that part?) or Superstars current sales.

And we should remember that Momotaro and Clubhouse have also really cleaned up on Switch. The genre of video boardgames seems to be thriving in general on Switch.

Y'know why Super Mario Party sold so well? The name. There isn't some double digit number attached to it, it feels simple and definitive

I kind of felt that ever since ND Cube took over the Mario Party duties, the series have always looked and sounded great, certainly much better than when Hudson was developing those games. Basically I don't think the production value started from nowhere (in this case, Super Mario Party): they have already got a head start even back during Mario Party 9 (not sure if Wii Party, the first ND Cube party game, have a step above in graphics and sound, but I guess it might be).

Even then, I think Online Play is a huge contributing factor to the series getting a second wind, because with the ability to play with anybody around the world, it's a revelation. Even the Mario Party Netplay community is thriving because there is just such a demand for online Mario Party, and it's amazing that the series took a long while to get there compared to its contemporaries (even Dr. Mario have online play much earlier than Mario Party).

Thank you for reading.

Yeah, previous week was also a 30/30 sweep.

There’s a great breakdown regarding this on IB but the gist is that pre-Switch the last 30/30 sweep happened in 1988-1989. 25-29/30 counts were also uncommon.

And now Switch keeps doing complete/almost complete sweeps. The question has become if a Playstation title can crack the top 30.

This leads to the question, why aren’t Japanese gamers buying games for the PS5? Would be interesting to hear a local perspective on that. For now we’re theorizing a combination of scalping and general disinterest in the PS platform.
