Oh man, it's been a long-standing question. We theorize it's a combination of high digital ratios + PS5 users playing F2P or PS4 backlogs + scalping for sale in overseas grey markets.
I still don't understand.

Maybe if more ps4 games had free ps5 upgrades. But I mostly see ps5 using ps4 pro patch with nothing more added. Xbox does much more for bc improvements.

I suspect ps5 will struggle when the switch 2 releases. Both hardware sales and third party support. I say this as someone who owns all consoles, I would love to see Sony trying to compete. I want japanese game industry to thrive, they make most of my favourite games.

We all don't. You're correct that it would be odd for a customer to have a PS5 to only play PS4 games on it, especially without free upgrades, but it still is a possible (but not probable) explanation for the discrepancy between hardware and software. In any case, PS5 is certainly a peculiar case in the JP market.

This already is the case with PS5 against Switch. PS5 sold 70-90K for a few weeks but seems to be settling at a baseline below Switch, which is a console that's already entered its 7th year on the market. PS5 still gets a few of the AAA titles for exclusives, but the mid- to low range have all shifted to Nintendo. The stubborn third parties like the Yakuza devs will likely remain stubborn.

That's too bad. As long as Japan goes does not go completely mobile only I guess it is ok for me. But competition is always good.

Kind of like Wii U games rereleased on Switch. Not many people had a Wii U or PS4 Pro, so that content on new hardware is still new to most people.
