Our new contributor - Oliver Mackenzie - strikes back with this second project for us, circling back to take a look at the excellent Tales of Arise, as it plays out on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles.
  • ditches the hard edge toon shading for a more nuanced shadowing
  • lots of polygonal detail in the environments
  • lots of segmented areas, probably due to last gen
  • TAA shimmers and aliases a lot
  • shadow map resolution is low
  • features screen space reflections, screen space shadows for characters
  • SSS being used for characters make the issues with screen space effects very pronounced
  • geo, shadows, characters pops in very close to the camera
  • all these issues makes the game's image look very unstable
  • two modes, framerate (default), and graphics mode
  • frame rate mode is 2880x1620, static
  • graphics is 3840x2160, static
  • graphics mode has higher resolution shadows, parially alleviates
  • series s has 1080p/1440p split
  • series s graphics mode is similar to the higher systems frame rate mode
  • ps5 frame rate mode falters in intense battle
  • ps5 graphics mode is 40-50fps, as low as 30fps
  • series X is locked 60 even in battle
  • series X is 50-60fps, (40-60 later in the game)
  • series S has stable 60fss in frame rate mode
  • series S is 40-60fps in graphics mode
  • dynamic res and 30fps mode would have helped a lot

Thanks for this thread! Seems xbox version is the better one. Even on series S it got better framerate surprisingly.
