Hardware
Video game hardware spending fell 13% when compared to a year ago, to $328 million. PlayStation 5 dollar sales fell by a single-digit percentage in the month when compared to a year ago, while both Switch and Xbox Series declined by a double-digit percentage.

PlayStation 5 was the best-selling hardware platform in both unit and dollar sales during August 2023, with Xbox Series ranking 2nd across both measures.

PlayStation 5 continued to lead the 2023 hardware market across both units and dollars. Year-to-date hardware spending was 13% higher when compared to the same period in 2022, at $3.2 billion.

PlayStation 5 hardware unit sales increased compared to a year ago, Xbox and Switch both declined.

Software
Madden NFL 24 was the best-selling game of August, instantly becoming the 6th best-selling game of 2023 YTD. This is the 24th consecutive year in which a Madden NFL franchise release was the best-selling title of its launch month. Launch month dollar sales of Madden NFL 24 software (excluding digital add-on spending) grew by a double-digit percentage when compared to Madden NFL 23 a year ago.

The release of Baldur’s Gate 3 helped drive 132% growth in digital premium download spending in the PC, Cloud, and non-Console VR content segment. Digital sales of Baldur’s Gate 3 are not reflected in the best-selling titles chart as publisher Larian Studios is not a panel member

Mobile
Sensor Tower reports the top 10 games by U.S. consumer spending in August as: MONOPOLY GO!, Royal Match, Roblox, Candy Crush Saga, Pokémon GO, Coin Master, Gardenscapes, Jackpot Party – Casino Slots, Evony and Homescapes.

"Mobile gaming spending in August 2023 showed a modest increase (+2.5%) compared to August 2022,” said Samuel Aune of Sensor Tower. “The star of this month was MONOPOLY GO!, whose meteoric rise shows no signs of slowing."

"The rest of the list shows small changes such as Pokémon GO pushing Coin Master out of the top five, Ebony climbed a rank to #9, and Call of Duty: Mobile dropped out of the top 10. Puzzle game Homescapes hopped over fellow Playrix game Township to take the #10 spot," said Aune.

Accessories
Accessories spending in Aug grew by 12% vs YA, to $159M. 7 of the top 8 best-selling accessories of August in dollar sales were PlayStation DualSense gamepads, with PlayStation VR2 ranking as the only non-DualSense gamepad appearing among the top 8.

Look at Pikmin 4 go. Especially with digital sales not counted, that is really good performance for the game.

FF XVI is continuing to be kneecapped. I really don't think Square is happy with its performance.

Unsurprising that the one system without Madden sold the fewest hardware units during its launch month

"3 month exclusivity deal" 😂

The bigger question is who's more unhappy right now: Sony or Square?

The bigger question is who's more unhappy right now: Sony or Square?
I've been thinking about that since yesterday too. Is it Square looking at the potential lost sales vs the money Sony gave them for exclusivity or is it Sony looking at how good the games move hardware vs how much it cost them to keep it off of other platforms for x amount of time.

Of course, this could also just be a conspiracy theory, everything is fine between them and they just agreed on something staggered like this?

Oof, FF16 is only #9 on the list of best selling this year? And it's under niche series like Madden, Zelda, Star Wars, Call of Duty, and Resident Evil?

Square should really be worried about this.
