Reported by CNBC:
Disney is investing $1.5 billion for a stake in Epic Games, CEO Bob Iger said Wednesday, in its biggest bet yet on the gaming space.

The media giant will work with the Fortnite studio to create new games and an entertainment universe where consumers can “play, watch, shop and engage with content, characters and stories from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar and more,” Disney said in a press release.

“Our exciting new relationship with Epic Games will bring together Disney’s beloved brands and franchises with the hugely popular Fortnite in a transformational new games and entertainment universe,” said Iger in a statement.
Brands, synergy, content, brands, franchises, entertainment universes, did I forget brands? Can't say I'm expecting the best out of this deal, both with Disney being very on and off about games and with Disney's size and power as a corporation.

Oh my god, please tell me Mickey and the gang are joining fortnite. But yeah this is terrible, I hate Disney with a burning passion and hope they as a company implode

It was there the whole time

With the start of this I am predicting within the next 10 years Disney will buy Epic.

Disney likes video games again!
Join us in 5-10 years where they divest this stake and stop making games. Again.

So they gave up on gobbling up EA? That was the better option, perhaps they could be the ones to fix what's wrong with EA.

But naaah. Iger is a shit, EA would have been in much worse situation.

Official Press Release: "Disney and Epic Games to Create Expansive and Open Games and Entertainment Universe Connected to Fortnite"
And here it is from the House of Mouse itself:

The Walt Disney Company and Epic Games will collaborate on an all-new games and entertainment universe that will further expand the reach of beloved Disney stories and experiences. Disney will also invest $1.5 billion to acquire an equity stake in Epic Games alongside the multiyear project. The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approval.

In addition to being a world-class games experience and interoperating with Fortnite, the new persistent universe will offer a multitude of opportunities for consumers to play, watch, shop and engage with content, characters and stories from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar and more. Players, gamers and fans will be able to create their own stories and experiences, express their fandom in a distinctly Disney way, and share content with each other in ways that they love. This will all be powered by Unreal Engine.
Just reading this makes me feel so, so tired. Persistent universe, expressing fandom, content on top of content...please...make it stop...

so is Disney actually going to take things seriously or bail out at the first sign of trouble like they often do?

Epic Games in 2023 - Sorry, because we like to spend money on frivolous lawsuits, a big new HQ building during the WFH era and a bunch of acquisitions we don't need, we'll going to layoff 830 employees or 16% of our workforce.
Please understand.

Epic games in 2024 - We are very proud to announce this new partnership with Disney, endless possibilities for our metaverse.
Alright we're hiring for 1000 positions, if you know ANYBODY that wants to fill in XYZ roles, holla at us.

Wonder what all the companies that gave up on their own engines to mass-adopt UE5 will be thinking when that happens
Lol, I honestly keep forgetting that Epic are the ones who even came up/own Unreal Engine.

Two companies that only know how to regurgitate existing characters and IPs instead of creating anything new, they're made for each other

Gross

As a low key Fortnite fan who was actually really impressed by the random drop of 3 new free games last month that actually worked, I'll give it a chance and see where it goes.

This is kinda wild.

Think this is more for UE5 movies/shorts than it is Disney games.

Could have worked an ‘engagement’ or three in there, plus a ‘consume’ :)

Not surprising, Disney has been having an extremely good working relationship with Epic from Fortnite collaborations. They also really want a Disney "metaverse" esque game, I think they launched like five different attempts in the last decade? (Anyone remember Disney Infinity?)

This could just be them giving up and deciding to put their stock into Epics metaverse for providing that sort of experience rather than trying (and failing) to do it themselves.

I guess I'll see what comes out of this new partnership before I form any strong opinions. I don't really care for Fortnite but apparently those three new modes they recently added were genuinely good.

Lego Fortnite already caught my attention a little, and if I'm honest with myself, I see potential in a side universe focused on Disney IP. It'll really depend on the gameplay, though. This experience could be the thing to get me to install Fortnite and ask if others want to play IF it's compelling. So far, none of the F2P Disney games have really interested me that much.
