Discussion GI.biz - Nintendo in conversation with three new studios to make games based on their brands

Probably a snipperclip situation where Ninendo pick up and published some indie game that fit a demographic and some partnership like cadence of hyrule.
They are doing that as well, but Chris also knows of three studios who will work on Nintendo IP (like Wayforward and Advance Wars or Koei Tecmo and Fire Emblem).

I'd be pretty disappointed if studios like Supergiant and Sabotage that have seen success with their own IP worked on Nintendo franchises. I'd rather see more original stuff from them, it's not like there aren't other developers that Nintendo could hire instead.

“Oh boy, what if it’s a really well regarded studio preparing to bring back a classic Nintendo IP?”

Was the joke supposed to insinuate that the Metroid developers have worked on Turok? Because they have not
Wasnt really a funny joke lol
One of the folks who helped found Retro founded the company that made Turok.

Who’s to say they wouldn’t do this a parallel with their own IP? It might present an opportunity for them to better fund and manage resources (ie. not every role is relevant at every phase of a project).

I agree that original works are preferred, but I also don’t want to assume they aren’t keen and don’t benefit from something like this.

What if...Compile Heart + Team Arcana presents...Super Smash Bros. Excelsior, the Smash to end all Smashes

Iguana Entertainment, which developed the Turok games, was founded by Jeff Spangenberg. He would also later go on to found Retro Studios. So as weird as it sounds, there's Turok DNA in Metroid Prime

Oh, only read the OP but the wording doesn't imply if the Nintendo IP works will be something like Cadence of Hyrule or more like Minish Cap. Both would be pretty great.

Outside of Sumo, it’s really hard to see any realistic UK studios Nintendo could hire.

Purple Lamp (new SpongeBob games, the studio is located in Austria) is the most obvious new partner.

Not sure who else but there’s a lot of really interesting options.

Supergiant for example is only 23ish people (according to Wikipedia) and they've been working on Hades and now Hades 2 exclusively for the last 6 years with no other IP in sight. I just don't see how they can do both at the same time unless their hypothetical project for Nintendo is much smaller.

If we're thinking UK, Playtonic has been quiet for a while and I could see them being a decent fit for something Nintendo (imo their second Yooka-Laylee game was nearly as good as Tropical Freeze)

Criterion's also in the UK and iirc there was a story a while back about either them approaching Nintendo or Nintendo approaching them about an F-Zero game during the WiiU era

But yeah, I agree Sumo's probably one of the more logical candidates from the region

Playtonic has said they’re making another 3D Yooka Laylee game.

Fair. Perhaps they’re interested in growth? These types of projects feel like they’d afford teams some stability, especially when you’re talking gaps of 6 years.

Anyway. I like the sound of the article in OP. As long as quality controls are in place, I can’t wait to see what we get.

I've got to agree that certain suggested teams, while fun, are too unrealistic for me to list as possibilities.

If you are a team who has achieved your own success and carved out your own name, with your own IP that you control, it makes the most sense to deploy your valuable limited resources on your own projects.

I love the idea of a Toby Fox Mother game tho!
And surely he would be one of the few that Itoi could be like "here are the reins".

One question I have about Dring's assertion is whether these are new partners? As in never worked with Nintendo?

Or would it include past partners? Of which Mercury Steam, Tantalus, Way Forward, even the SnipperClips devs should be a shoe-in.

The wording makes it sound like the former tho:

But the company is looking to add to that roster

If it's a Dring source, I assume Western teams, likely European.

So, Shinen and Forever Entertainment leap to mind :)

Shinen because of their pronounced technical prowess and strong affinity for Nintendo platform support.

Forever because ... I dunno y'all, they do a lot of work and most of it isn't horrible. Hey they brought Panzer Dragoon back, so that's good vibes from me!

Or maybe a new Soliani-led team? Unsure what Ubi has him working on post Mario x Rabbids 2.

Anyways SOMEBODY out there is surely toiling away on Starfox?! (Or maybe it's the next Masahiro Sakurai joint).

5 bucks says it's gonna be teams no one guesses. because no one could guess shit like Snipperclips, Good Job, or The Stretchers

“Based on Nintendo brands” makes this a lot less likely.

Outside of Brace Yourself, Nintendo has licensed out their IPs mostly to large and established developers.

I thought that was Command or Adventures?

Assault has much worse reviews than both.

Assault might be more well liked with a remake with online multiplayer I suppose.

Assault was supposed to be multiplayer only (I believe), but that wasn’t as viable in the split screen era so they tacked on a single player campaign that was pretty disliked.

This isn’t anything new and won’t be anything of substance imo. I think Nintendo would want to have too much control for any relevant studio to make a deal.

My wild guesses are Shinen working on F-Zero, Square Enix making a 2D HD Zelda, and (super bold) Evening Star working on 3D Donkey Kong.

It could just be porting/remaster specialist studios they are hoping to work with, the likes of Forever Entertainment or Nightdive.
