Discussion VGC sources say Embracer CEO has privately said Free Radicals (Timesplitters) will be shut down before Christmas

Bummer, I love the skill based (controller with crosshair movement buffer) aiming in their shooters. Everyone else just does point and shoot. Boring.

TS2 is one of my favorite shooters of all time. Trying to check off all objectives and 100% picks up where goldeneye left off.

I know they're already kinda split up anyway, but I was hoping for another great shooter from them.


This would be a studio I'd love to see Nintendo rescue.
 
Oh, well. We weren't going to get a new Time Splitters before Embracer stepped in. We're still not getting one now.
 
Could they not have just released HD ports of the Timesplitters trilogy just to bring in some extra cash while they worked on a new game? Seems like it should have been the first thing they did after reforming.
 
Doesn't surprise me. Now that everything is crashing and burning any studio and project that isn't guaranteed to turn a profit is most likely going to the chopping block. This iteration of FRD was founded barely over 2 years ago, they never stood a chance. What an absolute shitshow and complete failure of leadership.

Timesplitters as an IP really just can't catch a break. Really hope someone can swoop in and rescue the studio, the devs and the IP.

Embracer are an absolute blight on this industry. Nothing more than a vampire in corporate form leeching everything it touches dry and then leaving a husk behind

Was really hoping we would get a Timesplitters HD collection, doubt we ever will now.

Feel for the folks at Free Radical, losing your job is never easy but just before Xmas is even worse.

Absolutely disgusting behaviour, and even worse is knowing the people responsible for this mess will face minimal if any repercussions. Anyone at FRD has my heart going out to them, because everytime I see that Christmas photo outside their studio of TimeSplitters ugly Christmas sweaters from last year...it just fills me with despondent rage.

Selfishly, I wonder what this means for the TimeSplitters IP if it also now is in freefall limbo or if that's the weirdest thing they get to hold on to after shuttering studio doors. In a just world, I'd like to see Ellis and Doak at least hold onto their IP and strike off to form a studio a la Platinum Games with their colleagues who got fucked over and can actually stand on their own without being beholden to Wingefors DeVry-esque business degree that somehow keeps failing up.

if this keeps up i think Embracer should 100% be investigated tbh. some level of fraud has to be happening.

have any Embracer studios actually put out videogames? they own a ton of shit. how are they not bringing in any money to sustain themselves?

TimeSplitters just can't get a win. And during the winter holiday season? Absolutely fucked.

That’d be like calling for everyone who caused Sunsoft USA to go broke due to a golf course to go to prison because you didnt like no more sunsoft. If anything the question should be why the fuck did they ever think the Saudis were remotely worth pursuing as a partner.

Also a reminder that most companies who got bought by embracer openly approved of it or even reached out to them seeking a buyer; (that latter bit is what LRG did, since a tweet by their former COO wishing for a buyout apparently got Embracer’s attention and led to the purchase with both CEO/COO approving of it). I kinda shake my head at why some of these companies would even offer themselves up to such an unstable entity to begin with tbh but in this case I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s because embracer promised this team the moon to make the game they always wanted… only to backstab them in the end anyhow. For companies like LRG though their fate is partly their own owners’ fault

And Embracer will likely hoard the IP anyhow making the whole thing even dumber.

Like goldeneye/perfect that aiming should have been used by ir wiimote.
 
Free Radical Design was created by the GoldenEye 007 / Perfect Dark wing of Rare, many of whom returned to work on TimeSplitters 4. Nintendo let Rare slip through their fingers back in the day, but this is their chance to make up for it. Free Radical Design as a Nintendo subsidiary could follow up TimeSplitters 4 (and a 4K DLSS remaster of the original trilogy) with a true sequel to GoldenEye.

Nintendo not saving Free Radical or Fishlabs is pretty disappointing.

Purple Lamp is obviously next to get the ax from Embracer.

These are all studios with some history with Nintendo or Nintendo HW and a lot of Nintendo DNA.
 
Everything about Embracer sucks so much ass, hate hate hate it. I hope the folks at each studio that suffers from the executive dumbass mistakes are able to find a new opportunity sooner than later.

It's not really up to Nintendo to save every studio that's down just cause they had history over two decades ago.

Would it be nice? Yeah

As a realistic expectation? Nah

I mean, literally any publisher could have saved these devs and chose not to, but Nintendo has no European studios making original content that can even recruit the people who lost their jobs so it seems like a big miscalculation.

I never though another company could give the likes of Ubi, EA, and Activision a run for their money as the shittiest gaming company out there but Embracer is making a really good case for themselves.

FUCK EMBRACER.
 
Microsoft refusing to buy Free Radical or Fishlabs for $0 is pretty rough though.

Microsoft doesn’t even need the TimeSplitters IP, they already have Perfect Dark to give them.

Fishlabs would have been a good support studio for Halo as well.

Update Wednesday, November 29: Embracer has denied the report and says that an email confirming that Free Radical Design will close on December 11 was not sent out. Nor was a statement released for the decision.

Both can be true

FR is shutting down in a few weeks

Embracer did not send out an email/release a statement saying they would be shut down in a few weeks

They likely just verbally told people it was gonna happen, or emails discussing it were intercepted by whoever leaked it
 
What do we say to the Embracer that wants our benefit of doubt?

Yeah, I wasn't exactly holding my breath for a flash of hope knowing it was probably some PR juggling. Still infuriating; what do they possibly hope to accomplish by "controlling the narrative" here? That the C-suite execs are not flaming assholes? A little late to un-spark that tinderbox

I Full expect a company like Embracer to put salt in to the woubd by making a crappy port of 1 and 2 Timesplitteters I to the future or buring the IPs even more now that they own them

I wish. We're not gonna even get that. From the looks of it, after 3 studio closures they're planning the shutter Deep Silver altogether as there's nothing left. It seems Deep Silver was managed badly, they were too hands on on everything (which lead to that awful state of Saints Row). And now the studios are suffering the crimes of the management.
