8. Disney Magical World 2: Enchanted Edition 13,348
9. Ring Fit Adventure 9,387/2,942,720
10. Pokemon Sword/Shield 8,998/4,215,022

Another all Switch Top 10. Pokemon fever still running high.

Hardware:
Switch family 202,937 (this week), 5,011,906 (YTD)
Switch OLED 99,195 (this week), 492,172 (YTD)

PS5 (all varieties) 1,919 (this week), 933,001 (YTD)
Xbox Series 558 (this week), 91,904 (YTD)

Nintendo hardware dominating this week with good OLED stock with one of its better weeks. Sony and Microsoft stock woes continue as Nintendo looks to rule the Holidays in Japan. This week was slightly down from last year for Switch so Team 2021 is still running behind Team 2020 by a difference of nearly 200k.

Even with shortages, those PS5 numbers are abysmal.

I wonder which impression have japaneses developers about this situation, specially from niche devs.

Sony just doesn't care about Japan.

Apparently it's happening the world over. Sony is hyper prioritizing the US and maybe the UK

Outsold 100 to 1 but some people still get angry if you point out Sony is abandoning Japan

Honestly, Sony really does not care about Japan.

I feel for the playstation fans in Japan..

Those PS5 numbers… Here in Germany, the only current gen console you can reliably find is the Series S. I have seen Series X as well, but I don't think I've ever seen a PS5 available for order on Amazon since it launched. Granted, I did not seek it out, but those shortages seem excessive.

I guess companies like Falcom finally took the hint about the state of PS in Japan thanks to figures like these, you'd think they would have seen the writing on the wall a few years earlier.

I don't think there has ever been such a big discrepancy between the #1 and #2 hardware in the history of tracking in Japan. At the very least on a non-launch week. Absolutely bonkers.

I do wonder if Sony says that they support Japan that it’s just a illusion where they have a few Japanese exclusives here and there. Shipping less than 2k is just worse than abysmal.

I know they are shipping as much as they can to the US (and UK?) but this is just ridiculous when they have been breaking records left and right

Maybe the PS1 era? N64 didn't do so well in Japan and Saturn was the Saturn.
not even that

Those PS5 number are really shocking to me. I don't believe Sony can truck along much longer like this without shareholders complaining, even if they have "given up" on Japan.

This is why the Chrono Cross PS5 exclusivity rumor is a bad joke
It's possible they would have already baked in any Chrono Cross remaster (a remake would obviously have a different calculus to it) doing badly in Japan and are exclusively targeting the West. FF16 on PS5 in Japan would be something equivalent to a big Nintendo first party game for the Wii U, yes, the software would sell well but wouldn't help the hardware any. Square definitely has had a more Western focus as far as Final Fantasy lately anyway.

Good that Switch sold the same as last year (this week). Ending with +23 million is good. I imagine that 2022 will be another +5 million year, so it would end with +28 million.

PS5 sales are mainly due to the low stock and there isn’t any significant release.

I don’t think the very bad state of sony in japan will affect his relationship with main japanese publishers (especially capcom, square-enix and bandai-namco).

PS5 can sell 0 units in japan, still, Final Fantasy will be (timed) exclusive. At worst case, Square will push the panic button and downport it to PS4.

The future of Playstation is brilliant imho, Horizon, Ratchet, Marvel, Last of Us, Tsushima, etc.

BUT the really throwed Japan to death, my favourite Playstation console was PS1 due to Japanese games on it, current Sony wnats more cinematic western experiences, and it's ok, but major of it's first party output is "cinematic games" aside from VR, i don't considera that as a good business decision, they need variety.

What the actual fuck.

shareholders don't care as long as PS5 is still doing great business

Don't think the shareholders care. The bulk of their massive market is now in NA and Europe and has been so for a long time. And they've been making much more money than they did when they ruled Japan.

not even that

lmao the karma

FF7R sold 1/4 to 1/3 of its worldwide sales in Japan in its first 3 days. How can Japan not matter in this case ?
Those were PS4 sales, and the PS4 software sales have declined a lot since last year. PS5 software still sells abysmally in Japan, I don't think anything has broken 200k lifetime. Square and Sony are essentially sacrificing Japanese sales for bigger worldwide sales and that makes sense from a business perspective. Sony is really good at cinematic games and they make a lot of money doing so.

As for shortages, I tell people to forget online due to bots and scalpers. Just try the old fashioned way.

Everyone of my real life friends and discord group who wanted one got one… by just constantly going to brick and mortar stores and not relying for online restocks or even Wario 64 for physical locations.

I’m not saying it’s as simple as walking in and out, but when I got my Switch and my Wii, I stuck to local stores.

Numbers this low for PS5 means Sony are choosing not to allocate anything to Japan during this time. Yes they are suffering from supply problems but even 10k would mean Sony isn't prioritizing Japan, 2k means Sony are making a choice not to give them units.

They spend a lot of money as well. As long as the games keep selling, that's ok. Let's see if it's sustainable in the long run and if there aren't any stumbles along the way.

Damn finally a 300k Switch week!!!
Also, when do we get the top 30? I wanna know how Dread is doing 🥺. Hoping for a holiday boost.

Yeah, Sony could come up and say "I'm cancelling PS5 and no longer go on with the production." and 3rd parties still support it with exclusives even with 17m install base. Sometimes it's not about game sales or reaching out to fanbase. Sometimes it's just devs wanting ease of development and living their vision.

the same people who says "japan doesn't matter anymore"
There is so many people saying this. Like, what is it they are actually saying I wonder? Do they even know what they are talking about? I mean, Japan may not be the biggest market but oh boy, it is far, FAR from irrelevant. Just look at the number Nintendo does week over week for months. That is nothing to scoff at.
