News Playstation Boss Jim Ryan retiring in March 2024; Hiroki Totoki will act as interim

slightly offtopic:

it would be cool if nintendo's president finally gave an interview to an weastern outlet presenting himself. Hes been in the job for 5 years and i dont think he revealed anything about himself and little about nintendo's plans outside of financial corporate meetings. Hes just a suit, i get it but meh

Finally, the enemy of playstation has been conquered

sorry but I don't really believe it takes much skill to make a playstation console do well. It takes more skill to NOT do so (PS3)

This is kind of out of no where.

Can't blame a guy for wanting to retire and spend time with the family. Good for him.

if I was PlayStation's Boss I'd make Tokyo Jungle HD and an AAAA Tokyo Jungle 2 game which will sell 3 copies and end the Playstation brand forever.

I can't tell if people are being serious thinking that the next guy in charge is going to radically change the company. They're going to stay course because they've been both successful and popular with the way they've done things.
Not super drastic changes, like revival of Japan Studio, but smaller improvements should be expected. Like giving studios a little more freedom and greelighting smaller stuff in between the big things. I mean Playstation has always been a successful brand (unless sabotaged from inside cough vita cough) and will always be, wouldn't hurt to give fans a little more.

Xbox might shut down in a few years, and Sony retires...

...I wonder if it's for the same 130 or so million reasons? /shrug

I'm neutral on him overall, good luck to him. Will be interesting to see how Playstation will be with a new CEO.

I mean, this guy seems to have been able to change the company compared to early PS4 Sony…

Love him or hate him, he was instrumental to the success of (arguably even saving) the PS3 during its worst years, and he has overseen the PS5 to massive success. His personality and business decisions rub people the wrong way, but it doesn't detract from his success. And no, the PS consoles are not a self-sustaining success story that would work without good leadership. PS3 is an example of that. I don't have any love for Ryan, and I'm not pleased with some of his decisions, but it's undeniable that Playstation is in a very storng position right now. An exec doesn't have to be likeable to be successful. Their are likeable execs that are struggling with their jobs.

This is a good example of an "unlikeable" or at least unpersonable exec being good at their job without fans being able to easily form a parasocial relationship with them. I get the impression that Furukawa is very focused on keeping attention off himself while he focuses on the Japanese market, and doesn't see much need to talk to the western press or audiences. He's not trying to make himself the affable face of the company globally like Iwata was. In fact, it seems Nintendo is winding down the celebrity executive aspect of their company after the Iwata era. Once people like Miyamoto or Aonuma retire, there's just the producers that do the intros to the Directs that are visible leadership roles that talk to us. Oh and Doug Bowser, though he's nowhere near as in the public spotlight like Howard Lincoln or Reggie were.

(refuses to elaborate)

I feel like a lot of what people associate with Jim Ryan though, like Playstation's increasingly western-centric focus, was going in that direction already. The writing was on the wall for a while.
Yeah, PS3 gen was when their first-party gained a lot of importance and who was making the hits? It wasn't Japan Studio...

This is obviously big news, but I have no idea what to make of it tbh. Was he pushed out for some reason, or is this just him wanting to leave? Either way, it’ll be interesting to see how PlayStation changes under new leadership.

I doubt old Playstation is coming back, current Playstation is way too popular. It'll probably be someone just like Jim who replaces him.

in a world where every company is trying to nickle and dime you to increasingly ridiculous degrees, the least they can do is to try and put a friendly face to make it hurt less. i couldnt care less about which ceo does better or worse for their company's bottom line. so miss me with all the pedantic bs

These are fair points, I'm not a huge PS guy but the shift I perceived at Sony in the last couple of years seemed to coincide with his reign. It's totally believable this was already slowly underway for years before hand. I also slightly misread the original message which I thought was implying the CEO of SIE couldn't largely shift the focus of the company, not that the new guy (or gal!) will like keep steady because it's proven to work. I agree with the original meaning that they likely wont upend a successful thing.

I guess I'm just a bit bummed about the state of PS and the pipe dream of someone coming in who isn't 100% revenue chasing business person is good to pass up indulging in.

There's no reason to believe that this is anything more than just a normal retirement since he's still sticking around until next year. As such, I also don't see any immediate strategic changes to occur under the new leadership either.

He's definitely a divisive character (and understandably so!), but if there's one thing I think he did a great job at, it would be making the push to allow first-party PlayStation titles on PC. There's a lot that he did that I'd be happy to see go, even if I don't think it will, but if there's one thing that remains unchanged, I do hope it's their continued desire to port more PlayStation titles onto PC down the line.

Jim Ryan sucks

But this is kinda sudden. He didn't even wanna stay long enough to prep a successor? Weird

Jim Ryan has been a great contributor to our industry and a fierce leader for PlayStation. I wish him the best in what he does next. Thank you for all you’ve done for the community over the last 30 years, Jim.

Okay? I wasn't trying to be pedantic. My bad. I'll just shut up then.

Same reason as Charles Martinet, Sakurai, Hayo Miyazaki, Miyamoto etc

Everyone is just getting older and choosing to bow out graciously and let the younger generation take it from here. Gaming is still a “young” hobby but we’re getting to the point where the first of the old guard is bowing out.

I’ll never believe a Miyazaki retirement

Very happy about this. I did not like the direction he was pushing Playstation.

We could get someone worse possibly, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

lol Phil just can't let this story be about Jim Ryan... it's about what Phil thinks about Jim Ryan

these guys are all the same lol
How on earth do you interpret that Tweet as Phil making it about himself, Christ. He's just trying to be a good sport and wish one of his peers well

Do not use this thread as an excuse for console warring
