Might be a hot take but I thought Botw DLCs to be some of the most useless DLCs I ever bought and probably the only time I regretted buying.

The bike was cool, I guess. Everything else? Nah.

It was a weird contrast to the very high quality main campaign.

Bummer.

I’d be down for a little more time here ‘cause I love TOTK and this Hyrule, but if they’re bound for the future, then let’s shove off. I’m excited.

The way I see it, he could have been talking about the next Zelda game and how it doesn't have the same world anymore. Not sure if he meant dlc. Hard to say with that translation. I'm not saying it wasn't about dlc, it probably is, but I want to keep my hopes up.

Edit: I mean the question was what they are doing next. Not about dlc directly. And the answer was more like, at the time seems like they are not going back to that same world anymore. Which could mean the sequel is happening in a new world, not that there isn't any dlc coming. I mean the dlc could be done already. Depends much about how accurate the translation is.

You're gonna have to add some context instead of dropping raw links to pages few folks here can understand

Yes, that's a job for a UI designer at the Tokyo office. But Tokyo is also the main Monolith Soft office, IIRC, so it could just as easily be for the next Xenoblade or a new Monolith Soft IP as it could be for Zelda, couldn't it?

I'm ok with this. Probably for the best since it was the first $70 USD Switch game, and I'd much rather they admit/accept they don't have anything they really want to do than to shove out some half-hearted add-ons and charge $20 for it.

it's for an action game, and there's no Zelda DLC. they wouldn't hire a UI designer at the very beginning of BotW3 development

As much as I love TotK, Im not super bothered by this. It’s over 3 months and 150 hours of game time later and I still haven’t finished the game and have plenty left to do it discover if I wish so it’s not like I’m lacking content.

Kass is sorely missed though.

I imagine the boots-on-the-ground developers don't want DLC either. TotK had its development protracted by COVID to being the longest dev cycle for a Zelda game, they must burnt out to hell and back

... Yeah they might?
in concepting phase, nah, not really. they don't even have all the gameplay gimmicks or art direction down so they can't start on UI until they actually know what they're gonna make.

and why are we assuming Monolith is doing UI? have they done UI for Zelda before?

That's 100% fine by me, if they had thrown a season pass on top of a $70 game I would have been insulted. Nintendo could have easily gotten away with it too, so I appreciate the honesty here - especially now in a world where people are apparently willing to throw out an extra $30 just to have access to a game a few days earlier than everyone else - only to find out it was a buggy piece of shit. Yikes! Couldn't be me.

Probably for the best. If the next Zelda game is a completely new open world experience with a different map to explore and not reusing assets it will be an incredibly long project over many years before its completed. Also the fact that the new Zelda game will be the ultimate showcase for what Nintendo EPD can deliver on the Switch 2 in terms of graphical fidelity means that the next big 3D Zelda will have enormous expectations to deliver an even bigger and better open world experience with even more things like living towns and cities, more NPC interactions etc. Potentielly even filling this new open world with temples, dungeons on a bigger scale than BOTW/TOTK did. All this means that Nintendo probably want to reach pre production stages on the new Zelda project as soon as possible.

The good thing is this long term 3D Zelda project means that Nintendo will want to fill out their Zelda slate with things like remasters of older 3D titles on the Switch 2 as well as probably another studio developing either a new 2D Zelda game or remaking an older 2D Zelda game while Aonuma and his team focuses entirely on the future 3D Zelda title.

This isn’t a bad thing. Time for a new console and new games. I believe support will happen in the future.

Don't really understand the love for Kass. I mean he was ok, I enjoyed running into him and solving his shrine quests, but he was pretty bland, personality wise. Penn on the other hand... Penn is the man.

Good. That means the next game won't take 6 years to make

Whatever savings they can make from not doing DLC (The BOTW DLC was released ~9 months after launch for comparisons sake) will be largely eaten up by starting more fresh than BOTW->TOTK did with one entire world map already designed and the natural increase in development time from the more complex hardware enabling even more complexity, having to make entire new artstyle, NPCs, etc, as well as working out how they should be differentiated from the BOTW-AOC-TOTK trilogy.

Really looking forward to what they can do with a clean slate!
  • Smaller overworld? 1/2th BotW size would be fine by me.
  • 10 mid-sized optional dungeons instead of 100 tiny ones?
  • Streamlined, revamped combat? Have been playing FF7R lately and that combat feels amazing.
  • No more Bokoblins please?
  • New music with actual fresh hooks?
  • Magical new art style from my man Takizawa?
Let's just hope they re-examine BotW/TotK's tropes as much as they did with trad 3D Zelda before.

Here's hoping. EPD's rapid expansion and Nintendo's general technological excellence these past years bode well. Rising asset creation costs and the Zelda Team Always Has Delays Curse might throw a wrench into that notion though. If we get it before 2029 I'd consider it a miracle.

Penn is the single biggest improvement TotK makes over BotW. LOVE HIM.

slightly disappointed even though the game is plenty big as is—I just really wanted more stuff like the (late game spoiler) construct factory that really push you to understand the mechanics; there are tragically few shrines in the game that actually ask much of the player. but I am of course excited for whatever’s next and will keep my expectations high

also it’s not really “according to Famitsu,” right? it’s “according to Eiji Aonuma, who Famitsu interviewed” lol

I’m okay with no DLC, BOTW's DLC sucked, although if it was more expansive like the Xenoblade DLCs I would've been down for another try. But honestly I'm ready to move on from TOTK and didn’t really need DLC, rather them begin work on the next Zelda right away.

It's big enough already, I'm only surprised they didn't add a master mode, unless they plan to give it free.

Hated the sword trials, will never do those but enjoyed the ballad a lot!

Honestly there’s no need for it. I’m STILL playing the game and have a plethora of content left. I would love DLC shrines because the shrines BOTW added were much harder and some of the best but it’s cool if they don’t.

I’d love Master Mode and the return of Master Trials though

Until (unless?) machine learning assisted gameplay testing and asset generation get really good, you should be expecting huge games like this to take 5-8 years.
ML testing has been making strides in recent years, especially with how prevalent automated test has been

asset generation is a toss up. maybe if they created their own algorithm and training material? it's not that great if you have a very specific art style in mind

ML art and text generation currently work very well for very generic stuff as it's trained on such a large (and tuned) dataset that it ends up averaging out and becoming generic.

This obviously is nowhere near good enough for AAA games.

We'll see if it can get better while trained on way less but more unique data.

Ballad was actually pretty solid, but if they were to do DLC again I would've wanted a much more expansive experience rather than a couple new shrines.

Honestly I have no issues with this. I know some people will be bummed about it, but TotK is already massive and it's perfectly fine the way it is. It's not like there is any worry that we won't get any more Zelda games considering the sell like hotcakes.

Good.

If they have completed their vision, then leave it at that. Honestly, those resources are much better spent on a brand new game.

And I gotta say. Aonuma has probably the flyest mindset of any developer. Imagine telling your fan base to raise their expectations for the next game.

It seems like the Zelda team still has even more ideas.

I'm actually very surprised they opted to go this route, but not disappointed--the game is absolutely perfect and complete as is. Although I do wish they included a sidequest to get a fully powered Master Sword, like in BotW.

Im fine with it. Id love to see something different for zelda, or a return to an older style. Im replaying link between worlds right now and it’s still my favorite of the zelda games. Id love to see a zelda game that combines the personality and snappy gameplay of 2d with some of the more abstract and physics bending ideas of the open sky games

He's just there throughout your adventure, even in the DLC, and has the singlest cutest moment in the game with his daughters. He really embodies the spirit of BotW I feel, which in a way makes sense that he would stay in that game only.

I do agree that Penn is great though. One of the best new character.

Makes sense, TOTK is already DLC

Even though I don't agree completely, after finishing the game I think it could be consider that way.

I hope the new one is a more contain and more lively experience, like not a post apocalyptic world, but a blooming one and we stop the apocalypse, to preserve the world. (I want cities and towns full of life)

If true and they're genuinely not planning on doing more rather than just saying they're not. This would be one wonderful change of pace for such a big game.

This is an incredibly long and amazing interview.

Can we get a full translation?

I think he's saying the exact opposite... they want to surpass it..

also he's left room open that they may revisit the same world again:

Then, if such a reason is newly born, it may return to the same world again. Whether it's a sequel or a new work, I think it will be a completely new way to play, so I'd be happy if you could look forward to it.

――Since the hurdle for the next work that was raised with "Breath of the Wild" has been surpassed again this time with "Tears of the Kingdom", the player's expectations are higher, saying, "He will make something even more amazing." I feel like I'm getting taller...

Fujibayashi Aonuma and the development team don't see it as a hurdle, so please look forward to it!

――Ooh! ! !

Fujibayashi: I think that the staff who have worked on successive generations of The Legend of Zelda series always had that in mind. I am very grateful that many customers have been playing Tears of the Kingdom for a long time and deeply, so I will do my best to make the next game even more enjoyable.

--I'm looking forward to your next work. Of course, I will continue to play Tears of the Kingdom! Thank you for today.
i stand by what i said, but will word it differently, totk is the peak of their ambition with what they wanted to originally do with botw, ofc they will make bigger and more ambitious games than totk in the future, but totks situation is likely unique as it set out to do what they couldn't do in botw, rather than make a full zelda game from scratch.

Read somewhere in Reddit they actually didn't talk about DLC and just meant about not wanting to continue the Breathing Zelda storyline in future entries or something? Not sure if that's still up.

Anyway, I'd be totally fine with the decision but the only thing that sucks is that the Master Sword is now forever doomed to have mediocre durability in Tears (even with fused items) compared to the maximized version in Bread, which is why I love the weapon so much in that game. It gets close to feel like a bypass of the durability mechanic, and you oy get it after a genuinely endurance trial at that.

I kinda hope the next game keeps a lot of the same abilities and focuses on creating a new world and new stuff to inhabit it. It seems like the abilities would've taken the longest time to work on, and Ultrahand is pretty much the best puzzle-solving ability Link has ever had, so maybe if they didn't rewrite the wheel on what Link can do as much it wouldn't take as long as Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom took.

I kind of expected it. They worked for many years on this game, giving us an unbelievable amount of content, polishing it for a year to give us a final statement.
