NSO NSO NES, SNES, GB for September 2023 (Kirby's Star Stacker, Joy Mech Fight, Kunio-kun Field Day, Quest For Camelot) out now!

Nothing like a Quest for Camelot drop to make salty Nintendo fans lose their minds.

I had Quest For Camelot as a kid and I was always mad that someone thought it was a game I could possibly be into. It’s just not a good title.

Quality aside, if we’re getting licensed shovelware i rather get cool shit like U.N. Squadron instead of fucking Quest for Camelot.

That's a bold lineup Cotton, let's see if it pays off!

Also as someone who had Quest for Camelot it wasn't that bad

While I don’t personally care about Quest for Camelot, I’m now cautiously optimistic that more licensed games will eventually show up. The Lilo and Stitch games on GBA are legit. More people should play them. The first one is even weirdly challenging for a game intended for children.

I’m Team Re-release Everything. I don’t want any games lost to time.

Yea, what’s the point of a subscription service if you can’t add stuff people wouldn’t buy to it?

Huh, so, uh…no update for Japan, I guess? Interesting. I would’ve at least expected them to get The Frog For Whom the Bell Tolls, but nope. Weird!

Also, I never thought I’d see Quest for Camelot again…what the hell, lol. That was one of my first Game Boy games and I have vivid memories of it being a pain in the ass, lol.

When the JP update lands it’ll probably be at least 3 of these games.

Also, what would be awesome going forward is if we can get a regular cadence going. The 3 base tier apps/systems getting a drop, followed by N64/GBA, followed by Genesis, approx 10 days apart for each drop. Rinse and repeat each months. It feels like NSO updates are really spread out right now and it’s feel better if there was a reliable schedule.

Japan already has all of these games except Quest for Camelot, which they probably won’t get considering it was never released there in the first place.

Another update without Super Mario Bros Deluxe.

All the games look fun except Camelot. I’ll give them a shot.

wikipedia doesn't have the genesis box art of adventures of batman and robin but pretend that's there too

Joy Mech Fight is exciting to see. Hopefully we catch up on a few more JP exclusives, like Umihara Kawase.

I am legit annoyed how they just include Downtown Nekketsu March Super-Awesome Field Day! but only the japanese version while a NES English version exists in the Kunio-kun/River City collection...
I know most of them are still like, mostly playable, but I do really hate how they just put them with no instructions especially for some menus (I think of Kirby's Star Stacker here with its name entry and all) are not necessarily the most accessible for playing a guessing game sometimes, the complete lack of interest from Nintendo to even let us understand is just baffling.

I dont think they get any games as the famicom app updated with nothing and the others didnt get patched.Maybe luigiblood can dig into that update and see if it’s hiding something

Well I'm happy about Joy Mech Fight, I don't think it's ever been available natively outside Japan before.

Interestingly, the Famicom NSO app got an update alongside the NES app, but it didn’t get any new games… The Japanese Game Boy and Super Famicom apps didn’t get updates, though.

Basically only to update The Tower of Babel (Mystery Tower) box art with the newer name (it was just "Babel" originally).

When was the last time there was a Nintendo Switch Online update only for the non-Japanese apps? Or is this the first time it’s happened…? I can’t remember.

I would guess whenever Goldeneye got added. Aren't they still waiting to get that on the Japanese version of the app?

Oh yeah, that’s true; I wasn’t thinking about that. I kinda meant the non-N64 updates that aren’t announced in advance like today’s update.

So, on the spot vote: Is Kaylay's walk cycle in Quest for Camelot one of the worst walk cycles in gaming history?

(Seriously, what am i looking at?)

For some weird reason the Gameboy NSO app details page for Quest of Camelot doesn't list any publisher.

Nintendo published it. During the late GBC era, they did a lot of that for random licensed games.

It lists “Nintendo” as the publisher for me…
Yeah you're right i must have missed it before for some reason.

Interesting that Nintendo is bieng listed as the publisher though. Suggests that maybe this got on NSO due to somehow having no license holder?

Well, Nintendo was the original publisher, but it is kinda weird that they’d still be the publisher on NSO considering they don’t actually own the IP and I don’t believe they own the game at all either… Like, Banjo-Kazooie doesn’t list Nintendo as the publisher on NSO despite them being the original publisher, and I believe there are other examples that are escaping me at the moment, so yeah, I’m not really sure why Nintendo is the publisher of this release.

The basic gist of Joy Mech Fight menus.

This is what annoys me about a lack of localization:
I think this menu is way too easy to miss when Start is selected first, and it's like the most important part of the game where it tells you how to use special moves for each character (when you unlock them by defeating them in the story mode)...

Quest For Camelot? Who found that buried in cobwebs and thought it was worth preserving?
I actually think it's amazing that Nintendo is willing to add shitty games to the list. Bad games deserve love too.

Though, from the trailer, it just looks like a 2D Zelda rip-off

I definitely want to see a longer term regular cadence stick around. There have been stretches of consistency, like the monthly NES updates to start, then huge stretches of inconsistency when the SNES appeared. Then a period of monthly updates for N64, followed by more inconsistency.

Cumulatively, across both tiers, this year has probably been the most regular in terms of updates, but no single part of the service has been consistent, if that makes sense.

This has dropped early in the month, though, and we should at least be due for Mega Drive. I'd guess GBA gets an update, given that was last updated in June.

When SNES appeared, there were less updates at a time, but they were actually fairly consistent for ~2 years where the main updates were all in the same months (September, December, February, May, July). If anything, after N64 and Genesis, up to now is where NSO is the least consistent and makes really no sense (and this update does not even help, it's only for NA/EU/KR).

Right. What I mean is, some part of the service is updated regularly, but there's very little consistency i.e. we're getting updates every few weeks, but who knows which system it's for. Going backwards:

September 6th - NES, SNES, GB
August 30th - N64
August 8th - N64, GB
July 27th - GB
June 27th - Mega Drive
June 23rd - GBA
June 5th - GB, NES
May 25th - GBA
April 18th - Mega Drive
April 12th - N64
March 15th - GB, SNES, NES
March 9th - GBA
February 8th - GB, GBA (launch)
January 27th - N64

So updates are happening regularly, but no single system or tier of the service has a consistent schedule. Arguably the only system at this point with a predictable schedule might be Mega Drive. If last year is any indication, we should be due for September then December updates for that.

...somehow that didn't hit me that it is technically monthly updates since December 2021 but it's so inconsistent that somehow it feels like too much time passes between games. That's quite an accomplishment.

Since we can assume that the apps will also be used for the Switch successor, I'm willing to pay more for the offer if it leads to third parties opening their game treasure chests, especially in the SNES, N64 and GBA app. The Mega Drive app shows the way with its wide range of games.

Is the Kirby game just a Panel de Pon skin?
No, star stackers gimmick is that 2 of Kirby's animal friends clear if they are touching OR if they have nothing inbetween them but connected star blocks. So if you got 2 blocks that were Rick and a star you could do this

Rick star
Rick star

Which would clear the two ricks but leave the stars, or go

Rick star star Rick

Which would clear all 4.

Of note there must be star blocks connecting the two animal for things to clear, so

Rick star empty star Rick

Would leave all 4 pieces on the board until you dropped a star or another Rick in the gap.

I think those are doing the localization via scripting in the emulators. Something NSO likely won’t ever do.
Ah, digging a little seems you're right, they basically patch at runtime (translation, bugfixes, etc) and people haven't found anything but the original JP/NA roms in the Kunio collection.

Apparently it was similar for Kid Dracula on the Castlevania Anniversary Collection but someone actually patched the new localization script into the rom after dumping everything.

What a weird throwback, we used to rent quest for Camelot like every month from blockbuster because me and my sister loved that movie for some reason. I had the McDonald’s toys too

If we're talking licensed GB games, I would love to see the James Bond game that I used to have as a kid. It was basically like Zelda but with levels, and I have fond memories of it.

Seriously, it's insane how huge Kirby is on the Switch, every other day there's a (old) new Kirby game.

i'm a bit late here, but i also looked into the Kunio-Kun game.

From here on out NSO is exclusively going to get shovelware based on Warner Brothers IPs and nothing else.
Austin-Powers-Oh-Behave-GBC-350x350.jpg
for some inexplicable reason Rockstar thought this was going to be their big IP for several years, with multiple projects planned such as a racing game and two further mini-game collections on the Game Boy Color.

thankfully Grand Theft Auto III eventually arrived and got them out of that bizzare dark age. (though the two remaining GBC games eventually resurfaced in the Gigaleak)

that would be part of the same deal which spawned the classic Goldeneye N64 game, but the only issue is that Rare didn't develop it. Saffire (who no longer exists) did.
it's probably doable now that they got the N64 game, but there would still need to be some negotiating done.

Nintendo even wanted to release a James Bond game on the Virtual Boy, but very little is known about it.

The licensed game I want, because it’s the one game in my collection that will never be ported forward and it would be wild if it happened, is A Series of Unfortunate Events on GBA. Can’t imagine a timeline that ever makes it forward.

OOTL, is this a new asset they made or they just swapped for a redone box art that already existed?
