News Voltion games shut down by Embracer Group

Thanks for the Red Faction and Saints Row games, people. Also: Descent.

Best of luck to those affected.

Damn. Saints Row 3 and 4 was one of the best open world games I enjoyed. A shame they were "embraced". Hope their members can land something soon

I was just checking out the Embracer wiki today and they jumped out as a candidate for downsizing. I never expected them to be shut down completely though. Fucking Embracer man.

This is likely the first of many Embracer studios that'll close over the next few years.

Decades of memories... Saints Row, Red Faction even that little known Punisher game. RIP Volition.

I really hope Gearbox saves as many personnel as possible for their core team. And utilize the IP's they once owned...

Look: I don’t like to talk ill of companies when they have to make tough choices

But also Embracer themselves are solely to blame for their own failures. They set themselves up to step on as many corporate rakes as they could. As funny it is to watch this corporate shitshow crumble into pathetic dust like it deserves to do, I am so furiously frustrated with how many people are going to lose their jobs as a result. Every executive who made these stupid, dumb-as-fucking-rocks decisions that cost these talented developers their jobs belongs in jail.

Fuck Embracer.

This is just the first of the Embracer studios getting shuttered, a lot more bad news to come in the months if not weeks ahead. Hell, might only be the first announcement today.

Fuck Embracer's reckless acquisitions, and fuck industry consolidation.

If they unceremoniously nuke Asmodee or any of their subsidies I’m legit going to have some strong and conflicted feelings

I'm guessing the execs behind the acquisition strategy will somehow be the only ones who have 100% safe jobs in Embracer.

I'll self-censor the rest of this post.

Oh they'll be safe, but I wish the asshole who signed off on buying them up in the first place was also unceremoniously kicked to the curb and found out they were fired from a Twitter post.

Yup.
"Growth, growth, growth, growth, buy, buy, buy" and then this is the end result....gotta love these business geniuses.

Their Punisher game was amazing and it is the game that I remember fondly from them the most (I guess I can kiss the hope for a remaster/relaunch goodbye) .

SR games were also very fun. I'm currently playing the latest SR game and it is honestly not as bad as people say, I hate the hyperbole in this business.

Announced at the same time as the lift of Starfield review embargo, what a curious, curious coincidence.

There is something darkly funny about a corporation taking on huge amounts of debt buying up as many studios as possible, all as part of a strategy of making an appealing merger proposition for a bigger megacorp... Only to fuck up at the actual corporate merger part, and getting left holding the bag.

While I say that, it in no way changes the fact that this has a huge negative impact on everyone at Volition, and I hope they all land on their feet soon. Incredibly talented studio, Red Faction Guerilla is still absolute witchcraft if you consider the hardware it's on.

Fuck Embracer.

Saw this on Era:

A development source at Volition said that the closure was unexpected — outside of the overall restructuring at Embracer — and swift. An "emergency meeting" was called on Thursday morning and the studio was closed minutes later, according to a now-former employee.

deeply fucked up

Imagine hoarding a bunch of studios and IPs just to speculate an acquisition from the Saudi government, only for the deal to fail and now all of those studios will be collateral damage of those assholes executives' awful planning.

Seriously, fuck embracer group

i think i'm most saddened by the fact classic informative let's player Chip Cheezum is out of a job again, he was previously laid off by the studio a few years ago but was eventually rehired.

beyond his main job of handling video editing there. he was one of the staffers that spearheaded the public release of the cancelled PSP game Saint's Row Undercover. and streamed various prototype builds they couldn't publicly release.

it seems unlikely the other branches of Embracer will be able to do anything like this for a while.
We’re never getting that updated SR2 PC release now are we?
the community manager for the series says it's still being worked on despite the clousure, likely getting shifted to a different studio.

and for good reason too. that project was initally started by Idolninja, a massively popular modder for the series who eventually got hired by Volition. he sadly passed away in 2021, and the studio openly stated they were going to respect his final wishes by finishing the update in his stead.
quietly cancelling it would be an extremely bad look for Embracer, so it seems rather unlikely they'll do so.

good news, some of the former staff at Volition have safely reformed under a new studio known as “Shapeshifter Games”
shapeshifter.png

their first project is helping Inxile co-develop their latest project “Clockwork Revolution”, a fitting choice as the founder of Inxile (Brian Fargo) previously helped publish the Descent series back at Interplay, which were the first games ever made by Volition.
