With the looming foreclosure on the Activision Blizzard buyout we now have to ask ourselves one question.

Which first party From Software game gets a sequel in the future? Will it be PlayStation's Bloodborne or Xbox/Activision's Sekiro Shadows Die Twice?

Sound off in the comments below.

I haven't played either Sekiro or Bloodborne but I feel like Sekiro has a higher chance of happening because Sony isn't involved (as far as I know), who seem to have entirely forgotten about it 👀

I forgot, is Sekiro actually owned by Activision ?
I might misremember but I thought it was self published by From in Japan.

A quick search reveals that the trademark is indeed owned by From, but I don't know how it works in the west, if Activision owns the publishing rights only of the first game for the west or for the IP.

Sekiro 2 has the best chance of happening. Heck I could see MS/ABK approaching From (if they already haven't) about getting that ball rolling one the acquisition is finalized.

It's similar to Dark Souls and Elden Ring. Activision and From Software co-own the franchise and can't do anything unless both parties agree.

I should also point out that From published Elden Ring in Japan, while Bandai Namco handled everything outside of Japan.

Haven't played either game but Sekiro 2 is definitely more likely than Bloodborne 2.

Nintendo buying FROM is a funny poll choice, but I honestly would be interested to see how Nintendo would tackle a Souls-like.

Souls games have crossed the 10mi barrier multiple times now. I would be surprised if From accepted to make an exclusive now, when they can just sign marketing deals like all other 3rd party juggernauts do. So I would vote neither will happen if that was an option.

Since it isn't and given MS agreeing to Sekiro 2 on PS is way more likely than Sony to Bloodborne 2 on Xbox, I find Sekiro 2 more likely.

I don't know that any of these things will happen, but a new Sekiro or something like it would be awesome. That game owns

I don't think Activision owns Sekiro. From has the full rights to the property. Activision was only the publisher in the west and publishing doesn't mean you outright own the property. It's like how Nintendo doesn't co-own a bunch of DQ and Final Fantasy titles because they published by Nintendo in the west.

This is not correct.
FromSoft are the sole owner.

Feels like there's a solid chance the sun will die before Sony does anything with Bloodborne. I'm not clear on whether Activision actually has any leverage with Sekiro, but we know Xbox is really pushing collaborations with Japanese devs, so an Xbox-funded From game feels like like something they'd push for and it may as well be Sekiro 2.

However, almost nothing would go harder than a From-developed Zelda game, so I'm voting for option 3.

No, From Soft fully owns the IP. Activision has nothing to do with it in Japan for instance. They just have the publishing rights for the game in the west.
What I wonder is what's the publishing right in the west is, if Activision only owns the publishing right for the game or for the IP if a sequel was to be made someday.

Kinda like how Natsume still holds the publishing rights for Harvest Moon in the west despite Marvelous fully owning the IP's rights, so they had to change the name in the west when they decided to not work with Natsume anymore in the west. (The IP doesn't have the same name in Japan anyway so the situation is still different I imagine, whereas for Sekiro it's called Sekiro everywhere)

God I want both those games so bad, especially Sekiro 2. Sadly we're just probably getting Elden Ring 2.
Elden Ring 2 seems likely, or at least another new open world-ish Souls game, but it also is probably a long way off especially with ER DLC still incoming. I definitely expect something a bit smaller in scope to come in-between ER and ER2, something in the same vein as Sekiro. Maybe even Sekiro 2.

Nothing about Sekiro is small scale, and I doubt it would be for a sequel either. I hope you're right though haha.

Well not small scale exactly, but I seem to remember that they worked on Sekiro somewhat alongside Elden Ring and that Sekiro was more the 'smaller' project they could get out while taking a lot of time on Elden Ring. Unless I'm misremembering. So it wouldn't surprise me to have something like that happen again.

I hadn't finished formulating which option was more likely to happen and why, so I split the difference and opted for the third option.

But Sekiro rights might cause that to edge out.

I guess part of this entails the question of what is necessary for a Soulsborne. I've said before (and recently, I'm pretty sure) that Dark Souls -- especially the first one -- shares some similar DNA with Metroid. Some things have to change to really fit, and combat needs overhauled, but making blocked areas ability-gated instead already goes a long way, and the handling of atmosphere and lore already seems to work.

Beyond that, FromSoft Luigi's Mansion -- er, maybe we can find a way to keep incredible animations? -- or Eternal Darkness have a strange allure to them, and that's ignoring that Nintendo might even just want to partner for something new.

Sekiro is as big and meaty as any other pre-Elden Ring game they've done. We're just so accustomed to FROM being the most efficient and consistently excellent AAA developer in the industry that anyone would ever consider something like Sekiro to be a "smaller" game.

Elden Ring is only bigger in size, not density/complexity.

'Smaller' was the wrong word, and I don't mean to diminish Sekiro at all, it's one of my favorite From games. What I meant was more that it was seen as sort of a side project since it was developed at the same time as Elden Ring, which was the 'big one' so to speak. I swear I remember reading an interview with Miyazaki that said as much, but I'm having trouble finding it right now.

In any case, I would LOVE a Sekiro sequel, but I'm not entirely sure what they would do with it. I guess you could have it be the adventures of Sekiro and the Boy as they travel to a new land, but I don't know, I honestly feel like both Sekiro and Bloodborne and done and will never get sequels, and instead From will do another standalone game in-between now and Elden Ring 2.
