Since 8’s DLC i’ve been of the mind that 48 will become the new default. Whether the exact split is 24 New / 24 Classic, or perhaps 16 New / 16 Classic / 16 Crossover; I think we’ve moved beyond the traditional track setup from DS to vanilla 8.
My guess for a while has been that, with the heavy retro focus of the Booster Course, the next Mario Kart would still just be 32 for the base game but forgo retros entirely in favor of having 4 crossover cups in their place. And then maybe throw some retro courses back in whenever its DLC rolled around.

But I like your idea better, of just expanding it outright into 48 being the standard and having a 16/16/16 split. It'd be a nice way to concede just a little bit of ground to the "Nintendo Kart" demands while still solidly maintaining the series identity as Mario Kart proper.

I'm someone who really does not want Nintendo Kart... but also I'm a hypocrite, because I would take 7 more BOTW/TOTK tracks in a heartbeat to give us two nice neat cups in the next Mario Kart.

If Nintendo Kart is the route they end up going, I hope they give us the option to turn certain characters/tracks off, at least in offline mode. I wouldn't care if they added 20 non-Mario characters if I never had to see them (even as CPUs). It would also be cool to say, race against only Bowser's minions, or race against only the main characters. And I'm sure for some people it might be cool to raise against the babies and Koopalings lol.

I’m not super attached to Nintendo Kart, but I certainly wouldn’t complain about it. I’d take that over a standard sequel any day of the week. Gimme something crazy and different.

As long as the next entry either gives me a reason to drop MK8D or is different enough for me to want to play both, I’ll be happy. But the former would have to be one heck of a sell, because I don’t really have any desire to play two Mario Karts simultaneously and it’s gonna take a lot to pry me away from 8D.

I'd be okay with a Nintendo Kart as a one off title, but after 8 being the only Mario Kart game for the past 9 years I do NOT want the next game to be Nintendo Kart.

With new tracks dropping soon, any last minute rankings / final thoughts on the Wave 4 tracks? I think my ranking shakes out at:

1 DK Summit - this track just feels so unique in the game and is just so much fun. I’m really glad they brought it back.

2 Singapore - my initial favorite that I voted for in the poll. Lovely vibes, great song, and just a really engaging layout. Rivals Berlin for my favorite city track.

3 Yoshi’s Island - wonderful tribute to an amazing game. It’s a little easy, but what an awesome course!

4 Mario Circuit - This just feels so solid and I really dig the forest section with the Wiggler. Quietly just a very good course.

5 Waluigi Stadium - I thought for sure this would be in my top 4 and I still love it a ton, but I find myself picking it less than I expected. Not sure why.

6 Amsterdam - I really like the way this track twists arounds itself and the water section really helps it stand out. Love the choir “whoas” lol.

7 Bangkok - I think it just speaks to this wave being so strong that such a good course like Bangkok sits at seven for me. This course throws a lot of fun obstacles and wicked turns at you. Could see me liking this one even more over time.

8 Riverside Park - Sorry Riverside, you are just kind of too short and if you play with custom items the walking pirhanas stop carrying items which is a bummer. Lovely vibes though.

  1. Yoshi’s Island
  2. Waluigi Stadium
  3. DK Summit
  4. Singapore Speedway
  5. Riverside Park
  6. Bangkok Rush
  7. Amsterdam Drift
  8. Mario Circuit
Could maybe swap Bangkok and Amsterdam, but otherwise I’m pretty settled on everything else.

Gonna update my ranking ever so slightly, and talk about my (mostly) final thoughts about the wave 3 tracks. Given that the city tracks from the first two waves have all dropped like rocks in my rankings over time, I'm expecting London and Berlin to do the same, although I'm not really sure where they'll end up. Guess I'll find out in three months time.

S TIER (Top 10 track in the game)
  • 3DS Rainbow Road still reigns supreme. I have a few minor quibbles with the textures: the planets don't really look all that great, and I wish the jumps also had the beautiful rainbow texture instead of just being a flat grey. I think I also prefer the original music ever so slightly, although the new remix is hardly bad either. It's just different. Regardless, it's still the best track in the series and now in the game, so I'm content with what I can get.
  • Wii Maple Treeway is my second favorite track in the series, and it thankfully retains that honor in 8D. Similar to 3DS Rainbow Road, I have some minor texture quibbles, but the track still looks lovely overall. Losing the Wiggler bounce is unfortunate, but the spectacular presentation and improved track geometry helps make up for that. The remix is absolutely wonderful too, I'm a big fan.
  • DS Waluigi Pinball
A TIER (Great tracks)
  • Ninja Hideaway
  • Tour Berlin Byways is currently my top Tour track, nitros aside. There's just so much going on here: the train station, some tight and uncomfortable turns, traffic, medians, the lap crossover (which has screwed me and others over multiple times, which is very much a good thing), and the whomps help propel this track to the top spot. The remix also goes ridiculously hard, I seriously cannot gush enough about this wave's music.
  • DS Shroom Ridge
  • Wii Mushroom Gorge
  • DS Peach Gardens has a lovely presentation to it: replacing the flat hedges with the topiaries was a genius decision, and the texture work here is wonderful. Beautiful music too. The reverse final lap is also a very pleasant surprise; gliding over the topiaries is so damn cool. Only real complaint is that I never really loved the original track, so the core design isn't the greatest still, but it's a phenomenal remake that really pushes it to its limits.
  • Tour London Loop will probably drop the most out of all these tracks over time, but as it stands right now, I really love the layout. Each route has some really satisfying turns and obstacles, with the chain chomp gimmick just being flat out adorable. Putting one in the river was completely unnecessary, and yet they did it anyway, and I love this track for it. The fog effect is also really cool, and it disguises the ugly buildings much better than any of the other Tour tracks do. Feels like the highest quality Tour track we've gotten yet, even if the underlying ideas really aren't that interesting.
  • Wii Coconut Mall
  • N64 Choco Mountain
B TIER (Good tracks)
  • Merry Mountain is a nice little track. The theming is quite fun, and I absolutely love how it looks. My main problem here is that the layout just isn't all that interesting; the downhill on the first lap in particular is a complete snore. It's never egregiously bad though, and everything else here is quite nice, so it still remains relatively high.
  • GBA Snow Land
  • Tour Sydney Sprint
  • N64 Kalimari Desert
  • 3DS Rock Rock Mountain is solid. I think a big reason why I liked it so much on the 3DS was due to how novel the gliding was at the time; the ability to fly with that degree of freedom on such a small console was really cool. That novelty is lost a bit here, so the track has to instead rely on its layout and other ideas, which I don't really find that interesting. The gliding is still cool, don't get me wrong, but the only way to really wow me with a big gliding section now is to crank up the visuals to the max or introduce some more variety into the gliding section itself. 3DS Maka Wuhu does both, which only makes me wish we got that track instead. Oh well, this track is still good, so I won't complain too much.
  • Tour New York Minute
  • GBA Sky Garden
  • GBA Boo Lake is a fantastic remake of a rather boring track. There just wasn't much to work with here; credit to the devs for getting the as much out of this track as possible, but there's only so much they could do. The underwater antigravity section is obviously the highlight here, and it is quite a bit of fun, but the underlying layout holds this one back.
  • Sky-High Sundae
C Tier (Okay tracks)
  • 3DS Toad Circuit
  • SNES Mario Circuit 3
  • Tour Paris Promenade
D Tier (Bad tracks)
  • Tour Tokyo Blur
Overall, Wave 3 was a huge success. It's gonna be real hard for Nintendo to top this one in the future; if they do, it's gonna be through the Tour and the nitro tracks, rather than the retros. Nintendo's already exhausted so many of my favorites, so there's not much left for them to pull from to really wow me in that area.
Might as well dig this up and revise it, since I've got 30 minutes to kill and I've hit a good stopping point in RE4.

S TIER (Elite)
  • 3DS Rainbow Road is still amazing, no change here. Was the best track before the BCP, and its still the best track now. Guess I could quibble over some of the textures, but they don't detract that much.
  • Wii Maple Treeway is the same deal, best Wii track is just as good here. Would've loved a more thorough glowup, but I'll take what I can get.
  • Yoshi's Island is a brilliant tribute and a wonderfully designed track to boot, setting a great standard for any crossover nitro in the future.
  • DS Waluigi Pinball would've probably benefited from waiting a wave or two so that anti-gravity could be implemented, but it's still a great track regardless.
A TIER (Great)
  • GCN Waluigi Stadium has by far the best retro refresh, in my opinion. They went so hard on this track, and it's a fantastic result.
  • Tour Berlin Byways is still my favorite Tour track, warts and all. The routing is not intuitive at all, and the hitboxes are jank as all hell, but the underlying track is a chaotic mess of a gem that I always get a kick out of playing.
  • Ninja Hideaway actually went down a bit in my rankings for a while, but I've since bumped it back up. Similar to Berlin, it's not optimized for 8D at all, but it's still a lot of fun in spite of that.
  • DS Peach Gardens hasn't necessarily dropped in my rankings, but I'm not as bullish on it as I was before. I'm a bit more mixed on the reverse final lap, as the final shortcut it creates is ridiculously overpowered, but the overall track is still a great time.
  • Wii DK Summit deserved a better refresh, as they barely touched this one. But it's still DK Summit, so it's still great.
  • Wii Mushroom Gorge is the same deal as the above. Deserved a bit more, but it's still fun regardless.
  • Merry Mountain gets a bump up for its fantastic visuals, it looks wonderful. I'm also a sucker for the flying trains, and the vibes in general are just lovely. Track design is a bit simple, but when the presentation is this strong I'm willing to overlook it.
  • Tour Singapore Speedway has a few boring stretches, most notably the opening road that you have to drive down twice, and the texture work does let down the beautiful colors on display. Everything else is great, but I do wish they had put a bit more work into this one to really do it justice.
  • DS Shroom Ridge gets a slight bump down due to how gross it looks, but when the track is this fun it doesn't fall all the way out of this tier.
B TIER (Good)
  • GBA Riverside Park is my favorite GBA refresh in the BCP by a wide margin. They put a lot of love into this one, and while it doesn't quite stack up to the two GBA tracks we got in the initial 8 DLC, it ultimately holds up quite well, both visually and in terms of its design.
  • Tour Sydney Sprint has been the hardest track to pin down for me. I've had it all the way down at the bottom of B for a while, but I've since moved it back up. I don't like the routing, and the ramp annoys me on the first lap, but there's a lot of fun to be had with this one.
  • Tour London Loop predictably fell down the rankings. I still like it quite a bit, it drives very nicely, but there just isn't much of interest going on here. Almost feels like a standard race track you'd fine in another game.
  • N64 Choco Mountain also takes a drop, and is fairly interchangeable with Kalimari Desert. It's a good refresh of a good track, but that doesn't make it great.
  • N64 Kalimari Desert is the same as above. I'd put it higher if there was a second train, or if the current train was longer. As it stands, driving on the tracks is pretty lame, all things considered.
  • Tour Bangkok Rush did not make the jump from Tour to 8D gracefully, but it's still a solid track. The alternate routes in the train station are entirely worthless, but the underlying bones are still fun.
  • GBA Snow Land is another good GBA refresh. Just a pleasant little track. Riverside feels more ambitions and was the more interesting track to begin with though.
  • Tour Amsterdam Drift gets a lot of credit for its ambition, but it also does not translate well to 8D at all. So many sudden turns that are just awkward to deal with. But there's enough ideas on display here to keep it afloat.
  • DS Mario Circuit gets knocked for the underwhelming visuals, but its a well designed course at its heart. One of the best Mario Circuits, which unfortunately doesn't say a whole lot.
  • Sky-High Sundae is incredibly janky, but there's some charm in that. I'm probably being too lenient, and I don't like how it looks, but it's a lot of stupid fun.
  • GBA Sky Garden is an underwhelming refresh compared to the aforementioned GBA tracks, but the source material is strong enough that it can still hang with them. A simple but fun track.
  • Wii Coconut Mall tumbles down my rankings quite a bit. I do not like how they updated it at all. It's way too small, feels incredibly empty, and just kinda lifeless overall. I can't push it out of B entirely because it ultimately still is Coconut Mall, but it's a very disappointing refresh.
  • 3DS Rock Rock Mountain was a lot cooler on the 3DS, where it was one of the better looking tracks with some fantastic gliding views. It looks nowhere near as good compared to its peers in 8D, and as a result it loses a lot of its luster. It's still fun, but it was carried by the presentation in 7, and that didn't carry over.
C Tier (Okay)
  • Tour New York Minute is always a good time, but that's more due to 8D controlling as well as it does than the track itself. It feels good and doesn't get in the way or anything, but it certainly isn't anything special.
  • GBA Boo Lake is another great GBA refresh, but when the source material is as boring as this, not much can be done. Love the effort, but the bones just aren't there.
  • 3DS Toad Circuit is the ultimate nothing track. It's not good, it's not bad. It lets the controls shine, so it's never unpleasant to play, but it doesn't do anything of note either.
  • SNES Mario Circuit 3 has a bit more going on than Toad Circuit, but the presentation is incredibly disappointing, both in terms of the lackluster visuals and the phoned in "remix".
D Tier (Bad)
  • Tour Paris Promenade doesn't race particularly well, and while it does look alright most of the time, that only makes the ugly parts stand out even more. When this track looks bad, it looks bad.
F Tier (Terrible)
  • Tour Tokyo Blur is boring and lifeless, and unlike Toad Circuit it doesn't play well either. Some weird turns that just don't feel good. This is my pick for the worst track in the game.

Were it not for the alleged track limit Tour is getting close to, I would assume that Nintendo is going to bring all retro tracks to Tour, make a bunch of more (12-15) city tour tracks, make 6 more nitro tracks, and plan to eventually just have their next Mario Kart include every single track from Tour and 8DX.

Character observations (assuming I didn't get anything wrong):
  • Petey is a stat clone of the metal characters but with a bigger Kart.
  • Wiggler is a stat clone of Waluigi but a smaller Kart size.
  • Kamek is a stat clone of Luigi.
Did I get those right?

That's what I thought for the first two. Idk about Kamek though.

Also Athens Dash is a bit more interesting than expected.

Moonview Highway REMIX!!!

edit: Oh I see why Mushroom Bridge got cut, they really did their thing with the music on that track alone.

Bathroom course is fantastic, Moonview Highway looks and sounds great but the traffic feels almost nonexistent and less chaotic compared to Wii.

Wait I got it wrong. Moonview actually replaced the spare nitro in Wave 6?

46 - Daisy Cruiser
48 - Los Angeles Laps

51 - Unknown Tour City
52 - Koopa Cape
53 - Sunset Wilds
54 - Unknown Tour City
55 - Bangkok Rush
56 - GCN (?)
57 - SNES (?)
58 - Squeaky Clean Sprint

61 - Vancouver Velocity
62 - Maple Treeway
63 - Moonview Highway (originally a New Course)
64 - New Course (?)
65 - Athens Dash
66 - GCN (?)
67 - New Course (?)
68 - Wii (?)

Athen and Moonview Highway are really nice to drive. Vancouver is cool at the start, though from the second half of the second lap on it gets boring. Otherwise I can‘t say anything good about the other courses.

I like how Wiggler gets angry when hit by something.

Mushroom Bridge is DEAD

Oh this is VERY interesting.

According to the original prefix leak:
51: Tour City - Rome
54: Tour City - Madrid?
56: GCN - ?
57: SNES - Bowser Castle 3
64: Tour New - Piranha Plant Cove
66: GCN - DK Mountain?
67: Tour New - Piranha Plant Pipeline
68: Wii - Rainbow Road

So it looks like Wii Rainbow Road is safe, Daisy Cruiser was the Wave 4 GCN track, and both the Wave 5 and 6 GCN tracks are still in play.

Early standouts are Vancouver and the bathroom for me. Nothing sticks out as bad though; no sunset is disappointing for Wilds, but it’s still a fun track.

The music is great across the board.
