Dunno which Tour conversions are better or worse but if we're assuming a new course is getting cut for a retro and wave 6 is something like Rome/DK Mtn/x/PP Cove + Madrid/PP Pipeline/OG BC3/Wii RR, I'd think to drop Wario Shipyard in there. You get courses for DK, Wario, and Bowser, Mario's main antagonists, and we haven't had a 3DS course in a while. If you want a harder 3DS track, Rosalina's Ice World exists

of course I'd just take Dry Dry Ruins to get another Wii course in there and not have another underwater track

Wario Shipyard and Piranha Plant Cove are incredibly similar, so I doubt Wario Shipyard gets in. Rosalina's Ice World has a much better chance.
I'll be a contrarian and say that I hope we don't get DS Luigi's Mansion. A Mushroom Cup level course in the very last wave, one that will inevitably reuse music from the Luigi's Mansion battle tracks just like how Waluigi Pinball reuses Wario Stadium, would feel like a buzzkill. The SNES Bowser's Castle 3 from Tour shows promise as a neat remix of an SNES course - we've never seen an SNES Bowser's Castle on a console Mario Kart since Super Circuit, and I just know it'll get a killer remix.
Luigi's Mansion is harder than SNES Bowser Castle and a lot more varied. Wave 6 isn't just going to be hard tracks either.

Forgive me if this question has already been asked or is a silly question at that, but do you we know or can estimate when the new wave will arrive? Is it July 12th for Japan at a specific time? Thanks! :)

1AM UTC, which is more or less exactly 24 hours from now. 9PM EDT if you're in the US.

It's kinda depressing that we're coming to the end of the speculation. It's kinda nuts to think how much my life has changed and will continue to change before this is all over. Between this and Zelda, it's the end of an era.

Thinking about it more, I still think we’re getting an unrevealed nitro for Wave 6, despite the datamine

Yoshi’s Island and Squeaky Clean Sprint have headlined their waves as “first appearing in 8DX!” I think they’ll continue that, possibly with the most exciting nitro yet (especially if it’s built solely for 8DX)

Nintendo DLC usually ends big (Smash with Sora, the single player games with the meaty story expansion).

In that case, I'm having a hard time picturing anything except for an Odyssey track. Either New Donk City or the Cascade Kingdom would make sense, they're the two most iconic locations from that game.

Well, maybe a Super Mario Bros Wonder track could work......

I have been wanting a retro pixel 8-bit styled World 1-1 course for years

After getting teased it in MK Live, we need a full fledged one with a banger live band recreation of the iconic Mario theme

I’m still waiting for a proper WarioWare course in a console Mario Kart. Can’t believe the arcade Mario Kart was able to get a Diamond City course while we still have nothing like that in the console Mario Kart games… That’d probably be my most wanted new course, but I doubt it’s happening, unfortunately.

it's kind of a stretch to call the arcade diamond city a "warioware" track considering it was more explicitly themed after e.gadd than anything

none of the warioware characters even got to make an appearance on it and the few references it does have don't even get any placement to stand out

Sure, it’s not a very great representation of WarioWare, but it’s still very much WarioWare branded and it’s literally Diamond City. Better than nothing at all, which is sadly the case with console Mario Kart.

I agree that the Tour version of SNES BC3 is far more interesting than the Tour version of DS LM in my opinion - and this is the best chance for a retro BC in the Booster Course Pass.

Just because it's an early game track in MKDS doesn't mean it's simple.

I would greatly prefer it over Bowser's castle.
For a second I was confused because I remembered a flat Bowser Castle track in MKDS, but looking it up it was a GBA one, which just aren't visually distinct to SNES ones.

The most you would get is the layout being unique to SNES over a GBA one.
The Tour update of the track does look cool though.
I still prefer Luigi's Mansion.

Luigi's Mansion was one of my favorite tracks on DS, probably the only one I really liked in mushroom cup. No wait, Cheap Cheap ain't bad either but I usually suck in this.

I love Bowser Castle's square turns, gimme that

Luigi's Mansion is an ugly and slow track with all that mud

Luigi's Mansion isn't that memorable of a track when half of it is racing over mud in a swamp. It's namesake that it took inspiration from is really what's holding it together in popularity I think, but if Nintendo designed a Luigi's Mansion track today I'd expect something much more interesting visually and in design given how well they handled Yoshi's Island.

I can't see them depriving us of a Bowser's Castle again.
There are 88 tracks with wave 5, and only one Bowser's Castle, the MK8 one. The comparison with the number of Mario Circuit games and the number of Rainbow Road games is brutal.
I really think we'll have SNES Bowser's Castle 3 or, slightly less likely, GBA Bowser's Castle 4.
I would have preferred the N64 one, but I've accepted its absence a long time ago now.

Why are we talking about Luigi's Mansion? Is it because of that track that seems unknown and it is speculated that it could be from a previous game and not a new one?

If that's the case, I hope it's from DS or 3DS. From DS I would love Airship Fortress or Delfino Square. I like Luigi's Mansion but I prefer the other two.

I haven't played MK7 but I've read that it has very good tracks, and since we only got 2 in the pass, I wish they will put a third one in.

It certainly can’t be ruled out, but from Nintendo’s perspective I don’t think they’d see a true 8D exclusive nitro as a huge pull like that. They’re already advertising the nitros as 8D tracks, they probably think that’s enough of a pull regardless of their Tour status, in which case they’d port over this new track as well.

If they’re dead set on ending big, I’d put money on them adding the battle mode maps from Tour over a true exclusive track.

Do you guys want Tour city tracks to return in future Mario Karts as retro courses?
Yes, but not all of them. Vancouver, Singapore, Sydney, Athens, and Los Angeles can stay (maybe Rome and Madrid too). However, Tokyo, New York, Paris, London, Berlin, Amsterdam, and Bangkok don't really need to come back.

It's hard to answer without knowing what the next Mario Kart will be like. It made sense here because cities were the main focus of the DLC and Tour existed at the same time.

Tour cities I did want to see in a console MK but now that we have them preserved in MK8D I don't really care if they don't return.

I would want some of the nitros though to be in rotation like Ninja Hideaway and Yoshi's Island.

Leave the city tracks in the past after this.

Next game will have a ton of retros to pick from between courses that haven’t been brought back at all in a non-tour MK, and even ones that have but could still use a facelift (retros that got used up in DS and 3DS for example)

I understand why people don't want the city tracks in future games, but let me change your mind:

Vancouver Velocity with next gen graphics
.

I feel like the retro situation is just gonna be weird in general going forward. I don’t really see any reason to bring the Tour tracks back unless they’re all coming back, personally.

Even without tour the next MK is gonna have a ton of retro picks to choose from. I honestly think they should even leave 8’s nitros out of the running. We’ve had 10 years with them!

We’re already seeing Retro tracks make their second appearance as retro tracks in 8’s DLC. I think that will continue. We’re at the point where a lot of time has passed that it’ll be exciting for a second go round for many courses. Especially retro tracks that were “used up” in DS and 3DS. They’d get a huge facelift
Like off the top of my head, these would be exciting/likely to see
  • Any SNES Vanilla Lake
  • Any SNES Choco Island
  • N64 Wario Stadium
  • N64 Frappe Snowland
  • N64 Banshee Boardwalk
  • GBA Peach Circuit
  • GBA Luigi Circuit
  • GBA Yoshi Desert
  • GBA Lakeside Park
  • GBA Broken Pier
  • GCN Luigi Circuit
  • GCN Mushroom Bridge
  • GCN Mushroom City
  • GCN Wario Colosseum
  • DS Figure-8 Circuit
  • DS Luigi’s Mansion
  • DS Airship Fortress
  • Wii Luigi Circuit
  • Wii Toad’s Factory
  • Wii Daisy Circuit
  • Wii Dry Dry Ruins
  • 3DS Daisy Hills
  • 3DS Cheep Cheep Lagoon
  • 3DS Shy Guy Bazaar
  • 3DS Mario Circuit
  • 3DS Wario Shipyard
  • 3DS Rosalina’s Ice World

And this is leaving out Bowser Castle, which we have an extreme deficit in even with the BCP. It could be time for GCN, DS or Wii Bowser’s Castle.

It’s also leaving out rainbow road, and assuming Wii’s gets in the BCP, the next MK will still have GBA, GCN and DS Rainbow Road to pick from.

My issue with this is that I highly doubt we're looking at another track reset in the next game. Going from 96 tracks to 32/48 would be a huge downgrade. Unless they fully reboot the series, the only way to go is more tracks.

No.

I enjoy the city tracks for what they are, and I'm grateful to Tour for making the BCP possible in the first place, but the city tracks as a whole are the most underwhelming in the game.

It's been pretty funny watching reaction videos of the recent waves, people losing their minds over the retros and new tracks, and then just dead silence when the city tracks are shown.

I think if we'd gotten one per wave they would have been received a lot better. Two was pushing it, and three is just too damn many. 1 city / 6 retros / 1 new would've been perfect.

The lack of reaction is probably because of people not really playing Tour so they have no idea how to feel about it. Retro courses are a lot more familiar and Yoshi's Island/Squeaky Clean Sprint both looked incredible in their trailers. I don't think it's people actively disliking them.

I can see it starting at 48, but I do not think the next MK will start with 96 tracks.

No one will care about the downgrade in raw count when we get a ton of gorgeous nitros as well as whatever new mechanics/modes the next MK brings.

That’s an imaginary concern, people are salivating for a new Mario Kart.

Mario Kart is not like smash. Smash’s roster was always growing between entries. The goal in every game was no cuts. Sakurai often had to apologize/explain cuts.

Mario Kart was never building toward this “Ultimate” mindset. Retro’s started with DS and fans have since understood that as “oh cool, we’ll get a batch of old courses every game!” not “KEEP THEM ALL AND KEEP ADDING.” It is known, and even appreciated sometimes, that the track roster will reset every game.

One game getting a lot of DLC won’t change that.

Why wouldn't they just bring back all of the courses from MK8D + BCP + Tour and then remake every other course to make it a Mario Kart Ultimate? We're already most of the way there.

Hell, I really don't get where the series could possibly expand from here unless they do an Ultimate or a full reboot. What else can they do? We have bikes, we have flying, we have underwater driving, we have tracks that go upside down, that change layouts between laps, and that ditch the lap system entirely in favor of sections. Where could they possibly go from here? We've seen everything.

Edit: Removed Smash comparison after seeing the post above.

Just because it never happened it doesn't mean it couldn't happen.

We also never had a new Zelda reusing the same world as a previous title before, but after a record breaking entry in the franchise, here we are. You could argue the situation is similar to MK8, which refuses slowing down on the sales even after almost 10 years.

^see my post above yours. Also regarding that last part, we had 6 years to speculate about “where they could go” with TotK and I don’t think anyone predicted it’s 4 core abilities that the entire game revolves around until they were shown. Nintendo will find a way lol.

I’m not saying what will or will not happen. I’m saying I don’t think the reception to MK starting from scratch with courses would mirror the reception to Smash’ cutting characters from Ultimate at all.

Track roster getting cut back to 32 will be refreshing.

My main concern is just how they handle the 16 retros next time. There's so many retros in MK8D that it's hard to make hype additions now. Only a few like Wii Toad's Factory stand out to me as automatic winners, but I'm not sure if there's enough for 16.

We also have to consider the pricing at some point. Nintendo has actually been very generous with MK8 but I don’t think they’ll reach the point of taking the 96 courses they’re offering for $85 total right now, add a bunch of new courses with a ton of dev time put into them, and only charge $70 for that entire package.

why would I buy a Mario Kart 9 if the pitch is buying a bunch of tracks I already played + the leftover turds I haven't yet
I assumed Magic-Man’s pitch included new Nitros as kind of an unsaid obvious thing, but if it doesn’t, yeah that would be awful

Obviously there would be new tracks as well. But there's plenty of good tracks that have yet to be put into MK8D. Luigi's Mansion, Airship Fortress, Delfino Square, Shy Guy Bazaar, Rosalina's Ice World, Maka Wuhu, Wuhu Loop, Toad Factory, Daisy Circuit, Wario Shipyard, Dry Dry Ruins, GBA/GCN/DS Rainbow Road, N64/GCN/DS/Wii/3DS Bowser Castle, DK Pass, Dino Dino Jungle, DK Jungle Parkway, Riverside Park, Yoshi Desert, etc.
