Site Event The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Launch Party (ENDED)

Finished Minish Cap. Great game and really charming despite some problems, glad I took the opportunity to finish it.

alright, didn’t think I was, but I’m going for game recall!

because it turns out I’m most of the way through Cadence of Hyrule (despite not remembering how to play) and might as well try!

Since there's still a few days left, I decided to work on finishing Minish Cap. I'm doing clean up before tackling the last dungeon and I can see the influence it had on Skyward Sword, with the overworld being full of little puzzles (though not to the same extend as SkSw). It makes for engaging exploration, which puts MC near the top of my list of 2D Zelda games.
Yeah, I really noticed the SS similarities too. I always think of SS as the Zelda game with pre-dungeon “dungeons” in every area, as in the buildup to a dungeon can feel like you’re already solving a ton of dungeon-like puzzles. Minish Cap really had me feeling the same way with how many puzzles there are in the world.

Played BOTW for the first time last year, got Skyward Sword HD for Christmas, and decided to play through the rest of the mainline 3D Zelda games for the first time before TOTK. Made it with just a few days to spare lol, just beat Majora's Mask 3D tonight!

Here's an album of my completion, if imgur decides to like me enough to display it properly lol.

In order: BOTW, SS HD, OOT 3D, TP HD, WW HD, MM 3D

Also, very excited for my first Fami-Badge!

Finished another run of Oracle of Ages. I've played this game maybe a dozen times in various incarnations (it was my second game on the GBC, after Pokemon Gold), but it never fails to bring a smile to my face. Fujibayashi's influence is evident in the world design, with seeds of the "everything is a dungeon" philosophy from Skyward Sword being planted here. The overworld design is tight and dense, and the dungeon items allow the player to work their way through it in a fairly linear but nonetheless satisfying way. There are lots of "a-ha!" moments where sights that have teased you for the entire game become crucial for progression after acquiring an item. The dungeons themselves are puzzle-heavy, which is no surprise given the game's focus, but the 7th and 8th still trip me up in spite of how many times I've been through them.

Despite being a fairly linear game, Oracle of Ages has a pretty good randomizer that I highly recommend. It's very satisfying to break the game's otherwise immaculate structure, and it reveals just how well designed the whole experience is.

Minish Cap is good. Minish Cap is so good.

It may not have a lot of dungeons, but its overworld is so dense, yet compact enough to not make exploring a chore. I'm constantly going back and forth to explore it of my own volition, I'm taking advantage of most of my inventory in both the overworld and in dungeons, and I'm having an absolute blast going for 100% again (I'm in the period of clean-up before the final dungeon, so no worries about me beating this one on time!).

I gotta gush about the presentation, too. Minish Cap is a gorgeous game. Beautiful sprite work, great use of scaling and rotation effects (in particular to sell how massive some of these creatures can be while small), wonderful looking tiles, it's the total package. I also love the soundtrack. Fantastic instrumentation, which can sometimes be an issue for the GBA. Not here, though! Got some amazing dungeon themes, especially dungeons 4 and 5, and the sky theme is exhilarating. It's been a joy replaying this one, even if the final push to do all of the Kinstone fusions can be a bit much.

Did I do mine right? I did talk about my playthrough in general if you want to check my history.

Breath of the Wild remains so much fun and joy, after all these years. The choose-your-own-adventure model and game design is fucking addictive.

Great to hear so many people digging Minish Cap!

Minish Cap seems to be a popular choice, I suspect it's due to the NSO Expansion Pass availability. Can't fault anyone for it - fantastic game all around!

Did I do mine right?

Yes, of course :)

Finallly finished my Master Mode run of Breath of the Wild. I put it on hold for years because I wanted to play the older Zelda games first before continuing it. Channelling the past Links while exploring the castle made the experience more exciting.

It’s almost the end of an era for BOTW but I don’t feel sad about it. Playing this game has been one of the most fulfilling moments in my adulthood. Now I’m ready for Tears of the Kingdom.

I don't think I'm gonna be able to finish OoT3D in time but I have been enjoying it.
I just got to being an adult in game. If I didn't have work I could probably knock out this game in time for sure... but we'll see. I'm still gonna play at least until ToTK comes out anyway.
It's been a super cozy experience to go back. And its my first time playing the 3DS one as well. I threw on the 3D for the first bit but turned it off eventually cause while its neat it I found it a little off putting when the camera runs on it own in certain scenes to show stuff off. Namely the first time where it zooms around while Navi is trying to find Link. And then when you go for that ride with the owl off of Death Mountain.

Also I hope this media link works. I made a thread in twitter but I haven't tried to add an image or anything to a post here before so I'm unfamiliar with the tools.

I actually managed to beat Cadence of Hyrule!

fun game, a little confusing, ridiculous plot, bad cutscenes

which I think overall means I had a great time!

@Irene Here's my entry to the vehicle contest!

tinglesbattlebus.jpg

BEHOLD! Tingle's Battle Bus. Tingle is back, and he's wreaking havoc and sultry tunes across the land of Hyrule in his state-of-the-art flying bus/warship/concert venue. Piloted by his three loyal minions, the Battle Bus is outfitted with: 8 cannons; three high-end speaker systems; a row of fairy-based lights to keep you alight and keep you alive; and a spike trap to crush all those in front of you. It can both fly into the air via cutting-edge hot-air balloon tech, and roll on the ground like any other car. Whichever way the bus goes, all shall know Tingle's beauty. All shall know his rage.

If Link completes his side-quest (i.e. 'raise a million rupees') then who knows. Maybe one day he will be able to pilot the bus himself...

OBJECTS USED:
  • Wood Logs (10)
  • Cannons (8)
  • Wooden Wheels (8)
  • Fairies (5)
  • Speaker Systems (3)
  • Hot-Air Balloon
  • Spike Trap
I don’t know how to come up with a vehicle when the clear winner has already emerged

VEHICLE: Zelda’s Biblically Accurate Fuck You Machine.
alright… I can’t go down without a fight

kbWCtu1.jpg

meet Zelda’s Biblically Accurate Fuck You Machine

not wanting to go through the guardian + ganon hijinks again, Zelda built this vehicle to lay waste to anybody who fucks with her stuff

she used some dodgy glitches to duplicate items and access crossover / real-world components, building the craft from:
  • UFO x 1
  • Guardians x 2
  • Sephiroth’s Wing x 4
  • Dirty Master Swords x 7
  • Mr. Coco’s Arms x 2
  • Malice Eyeballs x 7
  • Olympic Torches x 2
she intends to build a horrifying fleet of them — but this one’s just a proof of concept!

@Irene this is my vehicle contest entry!

Note: Crossover items only from games that have acknowledged the existence of Zelda (she beat Sephiroth four times in Smash to rip off those wings and used her Splatfest clout to avenge Amelia Earhart)

And that's Minish Cap done as well! I had completely forgotten how to fight Vaati so I got my ass thoroughly handed to me at first. But once I figured out what I was meant to do it was much easier.

I need to go back through with the DLC characters and try out the new music as well. Somehow this one clicked with me more than necrodancer in terms of rhythm. Probably should give that one another shot as well.

Playing through Minish Cap for the first time continues to delight. The next step isn’t always quite so clear though. There are seemingly a lot of moving parts that my completionist brain wants to engage with rather than speeding through it in time for totk!

The inspiration that carried forward to Skyward Sword from a shared Director is super clear though and so cool to see.

Okay, so some minor adjustment to the event. The Vehicle Contest will be extended, and will end on the same time as the event ends, 12 AM on May 12th! There really is no real reason for it to end on May 11th, so with the hope of maybe getting another entry in, it will now end at 12 AM EST on May 12th.

Can I join the party 😱

Of course!

you may have a week on your side, and the superior vehicle, and my vote because I laughed so hard, and near-certain victory…

but the real reward is the weird shit we photoshopped along the way!

Really cool video featuring cinematic shots of Breath of the Wild. It's a nice way to look back on the game one last time before setting out on our new adventure!

I wonder, tomorrow the reviews will come for tottk. Does those reviewers did had enough time to judge the game?
I really wonder if they needed to rush playing the game and write a review for it. Because I think this is a game where you have to take your time for and hope it will not impact the scorenif they needed to rush it.

Where is it.

Where is it.

I have one more Kinstone Fusion to go. Link has all of his upgrades besides the postgame exclusive Mirror Shield. All the heart pieces. All of the new moves and upgrades to the moves. Maxed out wallet, quiver, and bomb bag. Remote bombs. Every figurine.

Where the heck is the last Kinstone Fusion???

EDIT: WE DID IT, GAMERS!!!!!!!!!

And of course I had a pile of stuff drop on me at work so have to do some tonight. Tomorrow night might be cutting it close to complete ALBW, but I will try. Not too far away at least

Unfortunately, since I had final exams these past few days to study for, had to go to work to cover hours for my long vacation next week, and the fact that I leave for NY tomorrow (attending the midnight launch event with my friend), I'm a bit sad I won't be able to finish SSHD in time before the event here ends. I may not get the cool TOTK Link badge I really wanted to advertise under my name, but in spirit, I've already acquired it.

And that's Minish Cap done!

Still a great game, even if the final Kinstone hunt was a little tedious. 100% in a small but dense world makes for an enjoyable sub-20 hour experience, perfect for a handheld game. Bring on Tears of the Kingdom!

@Subrosian Link Great thoughts! I've always found Seasons to be a little...odd...from a structural point of view, with a few of the dungeons and big setpieces (the return visits to the Temple of Seasons and the date with Rosa, off the top of my head) not sticking the way they were probably intended to. The dual map system is interesting, though, and the items are probably objectively better than the set in Ages (one in particular lets the latter down), but I still find Seasons just an "ok" game compared to Ages' dense brilliance.

It's interesting trying to trace Fujibayashi's influence from here to Breath of the Wild -- all of his games have lots of new ways to interact with the world itself, and the "overworld as dungeon" philosophy that was touted in Skyward Sword is present if you squint hard enough.

I'm doing my own replay of Ages, so I'm curious to hear your thoughts on that one as well!
Just one day before, but did it! I beat it, with the only exception of the Maple's heart piece - I've been grinding for it for like... what, four hours? Five? I want to beat DKC2 before TotK, so I decided that enough is enough and went to Ganon instead. That said... what a game, I simply love it. In fact, I think I've only beaten Hero's Cave on Seasons, but never on Ages! I always get struck on the color tiles puzzle and, because I knew that from beating Season's counterpart, having a ring wasn't motivation enough for my younger me, but in my mind I was sure I already did it - until I realized that wasn't the case. And so, surprisingly for me, I had some content left, so I'm incredibly glad I tried this and finally really beat it more than 20 years (and 15+ runs?) later!

It's an incredible game, even though story fells way too short even to Zelda standards (although still miles better than Season's, where is non-existent) - but the game itself? Oh my. People talks a lot about the dungeon trilogy from Skyward Sword, but dungeons 5-8 are consistently highs, and overall this game have, I think, the best 2D Zelda dungeon pool ever. And, oh, Hero's Cave. Whenever people talks about Oracles they tend to say two things: they're not like Pokemon Red and Blue, and playing both unlocks a secret ending and boss fight. But I think that the greatest thing the linked games offers is Hero's Cave. It is tough, like, punishingly tough. I think it has the best puzzles of any Zelda game - just because it is a postgame dungeon, in which what tests is your intimate knowledge of every item and game mechanic. And I think that is simply amazing. I spent six days with this game: three on the base game, two and a half with Hero's Cave and half with that heart piece, and I think that says it all.

You also point out that the items are worse than Seasons - even though I kinda agree, specially with that one item, I think this game throws away one of the major criticisms for Zelda: the lack of use of items outside its dungeon. No matter what dungeon I was in: I constantly needed to use every item I had collected. Even the overworld makes use of them in a lot of different scenarios. And talking about tracing Fujibayashi's roots: it didn't ever struck to me until now, and they have their differences, but when I went to that island... like, lol, Eventide? this part of the game in which you shore on an island and you are stripped of all your items and you have to solve the challenge it imposes you to obtain them back?

When I talked about Seasons I said this run made me realize even more that it was on the bottom half of the Zelda games - but Ages? I've completely fell in love with it even more. This should be considered, no doubt, one of the best Zelda games ever. And it being the first propper Fujibayashi's Zelda game (with Oracles being a kind-of remake of the first Zelda) it is absolutely astonishing.

Finished Master mode, woohoo
I...forgot to take picture during cutscene but you can see the little star beside the save file name :)

Ok so I didn't think I'd make it but I decided to stay up late and finish Ocarina of Time 3D.
I beelined it a bit so I missed some side quest stuff but there was still lots I'd forgotten about. Especially the end segment with Ganon's Castle. I completely forgot the sages build a bridge and then there's a bunch of rooms to go through.
So weird.
Anyway I hit credits and here's my tweet for it! So glad I finished it before Tears of the Kingdom came out. It was a fun trip to take.

Mannnnnn tonight needs to get here already, going with some friends to a local game store about 40 minutes out for a midnight launch

Okay so... I will not be able to finish ALBW. I got majorly stalled the last few days and now have 3 dungeons left, (including the final one) and motivation is waning.

However! I am pulling out a plan B and will beeline through Skyward Sword instead, having only the three dragons questline left on my latest file, which won't take as long. But! I also kind of sort of want to just chill and hype with energy drinks and music until TotK releases. (And not let playing interfere too much with mod duties)

Will I be able to get a badge? Dun dun dunnnnnnn...

So weird.

For the longest time, as a kid, I had no idea why you'd need to rescue all six sages just to build a damn bridge. I was like "Why don't they just make the bridge straight away?!" Then I thought that the medallions were maybe all part of a spell to make the bridge.

I started playing through Zelda II last night in preparation for TotK (ok not really) and almost immediately regretted it lol can't they patch it so text shows up all at once? Not have someone on a typewriter filling the text boxes. This time I will power through it though....or take the easy way out with the SP version. We'll see.

So even with abusing the hell out of the rewind function and copious amounts of walkthrough perusing (who the hell is going to find that mirror otherwise?), I did not/could not dedicate enough time to get through Zelda II: Link's Adventure in time - unless I pull an all-nighter - which is not going to happen.

giphy.gif

Was rough going at first but found the groove and started really enjoying it. Just cleared the Island Palace and got the raft last night.

Anyway, that gave me this Fuse idea for a shield that would be truly unstoppable (only read about the jump/slash technique today so just pretend that doesn't exist).

Also, the only way to travel:

(though I forgot the rules and there may be a little over 10 cucco's in that vehicle...oops)

It unfortunately doesn't qualify as it is, but you can always make it with less cuccoos + add name, description and explanation if you have the energy for it.

Nice fuse though!

Well, basically, I just copied Beedle's Shop from Skyward Sword.
Then I added some fins to lower wind resistance.
And this racing stripe here, I feel is pretty sharp.

I literally finished Majora's Mask when the post started and I almost forgot to share the credits screenshot haha, definitely one of my favourite Zeldas!

So I decided to not speed through Skyward Sword before the event ends. Feels like rushing, and even if it isn't technically against the rules, I don't really want to just rush stuff for the sake of the badge.
So no badge for me.

Still, Skyward Sword is such a fantastic game. I love it so much. It truly is a game that follows the kind of active game philosophy that was later perfected in BotW - Skyward Sword really keeps a beat, and places so much emphasis on its gameplay and how Link interacts with the dense environments via all kinds of motions and actions. And they did a spectacular job with SSHD - The Wii version always felt a bit flimsy, but SSHD is just perfection in its controls, and the slight vibration in the joycons that comes with every sword hit is so damn satisfying. Tactile bliss.

The dungeons, likewise, are stellar all across the board, and really encompasses and excels at the "puzzle box" approach, where everything is interconnected and where components interact with each other in ways that makes the puzzles feel like such a joy to solve. Here's my ranking:

1. Sandship
2. Sky Keep
3. Ancient Cistern
4. Fire Sanctuary
5. Lanayru Mining Facility
6. Skyview Temple
7. Earth Temple

There truly is nothing more I love in the world of games than a 3D Zelda.

Managed to get through ALBW in time:

PHEW, talk about racing the clock.

Minish Cap is finished, my first run through it! Full impressions to come somewhere sometime else because it’s totk time baby!

TLDR: Wow, perhaps my favorite 2D Zelda. ALBW would have been far less impressive a play for me had I realized how much it was inspired by this (esp. all the 3D stuff in the Sky Dungeon). That, on top of the Skyward Sword-like overworld design, the Botw Shrine/Korok-like Kinstones… this was definitely ahead of it’s time! I got lost in side content yesterday, hence the mad rush today. Rewind mode came in handy as I bee-lined through the last three dungeons, whewwww.

Thanks for the challenge, @Irene… I’m ready for totk!
