Discussion Which genres Nintendo needs to try?

Grid-based dungeon crawler.

Maaaybe a hunting game, but I think it’s so hard to do while dodging the Gammoth in the room.

Halo killer First Person Shooter

Splatoon did not scratch the itch I needed it to back in 2012 and still doesn't, but a boomer shooter in a modern age would be right up my alley with callbacks to health paks and armor, and an ability to hold onto like eight guns at a time instead of just two.

That one too.

In my youth I often thought of Nintendo checking boxes with their takes on genres, but nowadays I only really want Nintendo to stay true to the creative process that gave us Splatoon, Labo, and Ring Fit. If new ideas lead to new genres that's great, but I don't see any intrinsic value to, say, "Cities: Skylines but Nintendo made it."

As much as i wish to think that splatoon should be a new genre, i don't see being clones.

I've always loved the idea of Sim City done Nintendo style where you're Pauline and you've gotta make New Donk City thrive.

I'd like a Nintendo roguelite too

I know the Star Fox reboot idea is overplayed, but I'd really be interested in seeing Nintendo's take on a 3rd person action-adventure shooter, and that feels like the best fit barring an entirely new IP (which would also be welcome). Was hoping the Splatoon campaigns would transition into that, but they seem content to stick with the platforming side of things which doesn't really do anything for me.

I've always been itching for a Telltale-style game, with all of the bells and whistles of dialogue wheels with timers on them, choices that actually means something, multiple endings, and character-driven drama. Now, I know that story isn't Nintendo's strongest priority, but I think people underrate how gameplay-oriented the Telltale-style actually is, with the intricate way the outcomes of the dialogue choices impact the narrative, and how the character dynamics changes and shifts over time. Like, strip away the characters and the story and you still have something 'mechanical' based on choices and consequences. Nintendo's design philosophy is something that could do a fun spin on those mechanics, and create truly interesting and innovative diagrams of those choices and consequences and how they play out and react with different elements. So I don't really agree that a game of this kind would be against "gameplay first, then a story that fits it".

And yes, while story isn't Nintendo's strongest priority, that doesn't mean that they're bad at it. I easily think that they could spearhead a project like this with BotW-tier presentation in regards to character design, cutscene direction and animation quality, all while incorporating a story as heartfelt and sincere as Wind Waker.

In my opinion, this is a surefire hit in the making.

MMO
Puzzle games (I know that Brain Age / Big Brain Academy exists) but you know something like Layton.
And as said above, stealth games (too bad that Aonuma's thief game was only hint at Link's Awakening).
Last but not least - tower defense games (they did Star Fox Guard as a free game with Zero and I heard it was good).

With the EPD expansion that's coming I hope they will do more of new genres but it seems like the usual EPD groups will be doing their stuff as usual. Remember the name Sakaguchi (one of Splatoon's 1 Directors/LABO Director) because that's the name you will hear a lot when next gen appears and his new game with (I hope) new genre as well. But generally speaking they can turn existing genre into something that plays and looks different than anything (see Splatoon) so they can "reinvent" some other genres too.

I like your ideas, Lukas.

Would be interesting to see their take on a Roguelike.

I really expected them to go all out with something like this thanks to the Joy-Con. Something that could be played while both players hold the system would be very neat.

I had an envisioning of the next major 2D Mario having a multiple 'campaigns', with one dedicated to single-player, one for two players, and one for 3-4 players.
With some sort of control mechanics (throwing, bouncing on each other, bosses that need teamwork) for each, or even situations where only when Luigi or Peach join do they get special moves required for platforming puzzles.
And you need to beat all campaigns to unlock special levels, or something.

It would be pretty cool and unique and fix a lot of the problems I have with New Super Mario Bros (design compromises for 1-4P making it never feel properly designed).

Game would have to include online play.

Hire me Nintendo.

Nintendo MMO would be so good when you think about it. Give it some unique artstyle that would work with different characters and support it for years just like they are supporting Splatoon (but more frequently) and Tour. People find it laughtable due to their online but otherwise I find the idea really compelling.

I doubt they would ever do it, because they wouldn't want to openly step on Capcom's toes, but I, too, would love to see what they could do with a Hunting game. Take an established franchise (StarFox? Dragalia Lost?) or a brand new IP, and just give it that "Nintendo touch" that might actually do wonders for pushing the genre forward a bit. Everybody else is still stuck chasing after Capcom and MH, after all.

They should take Dragalia Lost and turn it into their Diablo

I love this idea, too. In a world where Dreamcast-style PSO is a fleeting memory, Diablo 4 won't likely hit until the Switch's successor, and Team Ninja's masocore games don't come to Nintendo at all, I could definitely go for a nice loot grind action-rpg!

Last but not least - tower defense games (they did Star Fox Guard as a free game with Zero and I heard it was good).

It's easily my favorite take on a tower defense style, and I would love to see more like it. If it weren't for the fact that releasing a StarFox spinoff instead of a proper game would probably go about as well as Fed Force did in a drought of Metroid content, I'd wholly endorse Nintendo giving Slippy another game.

Funny enough I can see Splatoon taking on the Monster Hunter approach. Fighting down big sea creatures with friends. Maybe next gen.

The idea is there with Salmon Run and new bosses but it would be perfect, just made it on open sea with you and team on boats and such, just like Wind Waker but Splatoon style. You arrive in some type of "Splatoon dungeon" huge type level and then there are bosses, you need to solve puzzles, platforming etc. You need to help each other. There are always multiple of these levels and it's up to you in which order you want to clear them. That would be perfect for a spin-off coop game.

The artwork for Salmon Run next week gave me some of those vibes (also why the name Next Wave isn't used in actual game lol).

I remember the 2020 wishing from Splatoon team with Save Our Salmons and many people believing that Salmon Run spin-off was in the works and so many people were excited about that idea.

I'd like a horror ip by EPD or Hal because they can make some horrible looking abominations in their games, and extending that would be cool I guess.

Yeah, I agree.

Except if they made a Shenmue clone.

It’s not entirely new for them, but I wish Nintendo would make more rhythm games. Nintendo has released some excellent rhythm games in the past, like the Rhythm Heaven, Jam with the Band, and Elite Beat Agents games, and of course there’s Wii Music (which I personally enjoyed, as much as I wish they would have done more with the concept), plus some smaller titles like Dedede’s Drum Dash Deluxe and HarmoKnight, but we’ve gotten absolutely nothing in recent years. The closest thing would be Cadence of Hyrule, I guess, but before that there’s been nothing since Rhythm Heaven Megamix which was 7 years ago now. I guess Ring Fit Adventure does have a rhythm game mode, but it’s just a side mode. And I’m not counting Fitness Boxing, not only because Nintendo doesn’t own the series, but also because it just uses MIDI versions of existing mainstream music, not music from other Nintendo games or new music made specifically for a game, which is what I want.

It’s especially tragic because Nintendo has so much great music from various franchises that could be used in a rhythm game along the lines of Theatrhythm, but the closest they’ve ever done to something like that is Dedede’s Drum Dash for Kirby music, aside from them throwing a few songs into other games like Ring Fit Adventure’s rhythm game mode, HarmoKnight, Jam with the Band, and Wii Music. Okay, and I guess Cadence of Hyrule is kind of that for Zelda music, but it’s also not exactly the kind of rhythm game that I want. I want something more like Theatrhythm but with Nintendo music, or even something like Just Dance or Fitness Boxing with Nintendo music. Or, at the very least, I hope we get new installments of some of Nintendo’s existing rhythm game series like Rhythm Heaven or Jam with the Band…

I’d also like to see more party games from Nintendo that can accommodate an actual party. I’m talking at least 6–8 players; none of this capped at 4 players nonsense! It’s wild to me that Mario Party, of all games, still doesn’t really live up to its name after all these years—4 players isn’t a party, it’s two couples or a few friends hanging out. Of course we have the rare few games that support beyond 4 players like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but I wish there were more. WarioWare: Smooth Moves on Wii had an amazing multiplayer mode that supported up to 12 players, for example! I want more of that kind of thing! Many Wii U games also supported 5 players instead of the typical 4 thanks to the GamePad, but now that the Switch can have 8 wireless controllers synced at the same time, it’s disappointing that there aren’t more party games taking advantage of that and offering multiplayer modes for more than just 4 players. I honestly hope the rumored Everybody’s 1-2-Switch game actually does release eventually because it sure as hell sounded like more of a party game than most offerings on Switch.

Honestly, this would be very much up my alley. More so than mainline Splatoon, in any case ahahaha

As long as I can still do it all solo, if I wish, though!

Donkey Kong - rhythm / autorunner / rail shooter / starfox 64-like
Paper Mario - Slapstick / detective / adventure / pastiche
Mario Kart - rally / rogue like / fluid physics immersive sim

New IP - physical board game

Battle royale games.

The Tetris 99/Pacman 99 (and the forgotten mario 35) are really fun and it is actually a nintendo way to approach the formula but I would love to see more takes on BR.

As a splatoon fan I would love to have some kind of BR mode, but thinking of it is really hard to pull of.

Thank you! You took the words out of my mouth. I would love a true fps form Nintendo with local co-op multiplayer.

Wonder if it could work with Starfox cast and a setting like Jet Force Gemini.

No? Ok sorry, going back to my cave...

I have one more genre: souls like games.
Honestly, this is where I'd say Nintendo could just hit up Team Ninja to do the honors.

Give me a masocore game (see: Nioh, Strangers of Paradise) starring Fox McCloud and his team marooned on a hostile alien world teeming with wildlife, but the specter of one of Lylat's apparently many ancient civilizations hovers about and makes for increasing intrigue as the team delves in deeper.

SoP had some fun gun play for its job classes, and Team Ninja's upcoming Rise of the Ronin looks to continue that. So, I'd have every confidence that playing around with Fox's Blaster would be just as fun as having him do some melee.

Would be a better realization of the potential of Star Fox in KT's hands than another Musou, imo.

That was what i thinked about. Except for the star fox part.

Nintendo have done basically every genre out there, but there's one (and only one!) single genre that Nintendo have never developed or published a single great game in...

The shmup.

Now, Nintendo have attempted this before a good few times in their early days as a video game maker (Space Firebird, Radar Scope, Solar Striker, Donkey Kong 3, Space Fever 1 & 2), but all of these attempts have been pretty middling; even for their time. For whatever reason, Nintendo's world-class designers have just never been able to crack the code to make a really great shmup (We're not counting Star Fox or Sin & Punishment here, they're rail shooters; not shmups), it's the one genre that they've never really had any success with.

I'd love to see Nintendo finally break the curse and make a really good vertical and/or horizontal shmup! Would love to see what they could really bring to the table in this genre!

Horror. I need an actual horror nintendo game.

Nintendo have already made 4 of them (Eternal Darkness, Luigi's Mansion 1,2 & 3). We could even count Famicom Detective Club 1 & 2, Metroid Fusion and Metroid Dread if you were so inclined as well.

That's plenty already.

Only Eternal darkness is actual horror in it. Luigi's Mansion 1 2 and 3 arent horror for sure, and famicom is simply too small and unconventional to count, and while the metroid series may have some horror elements they really arent horror.
