StarTopic The Legend of Zelda series |ST| Or: The Legend of Groose

To this day I'm still pretty amazed that Groose is not Ganondorf.

I know a lot of people like Demise, but when I started Skyward Sword, the fact that Groose has red hair, is super muscular, doesn't like Link and knows Zelda, I was expecting him to be contaminated by evil and that he would become the first incarnation of Ganon/Ganondorf.

I'm sure Nintendo thought about it too but it's a shame they didn't do it :(
I never liked that idea. Groose is this archetype of a goofy school bully who develops a heart of gold and becomes a hero in his own right, willing to let go of his love for Zelda for the sake of the world. Ganondorf is a cruel king of thieves raised by witches who sought power after surviving in the harsh desert. I'm not convinced trying to establish some connection would benefit either character.

He evokes the idea of Ganondorf, draws from some of the imagery and relationship just enough to form a connection in the audience's minds and lightly fills some of that antagonistic role*, but ultimately takes a different trajectory.

A potential route to consider this would be that Ganon is a manifestation of Demise and Ganondorf was merely his conduit. Ganondorf, as an individual, perhaps, wasn't fated to this role and could have become something other than this Demon King, but that's the path he took and it opened a foothold for Demise's curse in that time.

In the end, they possess some, especially superficial, similarities, but to actually turn Groose into Ganondorf through some evil contamination would do disservice to the actual character of both.

*Basically, he's Ganondorf if Ganondorf were merely a school bully in a new The Legend of Zelda: Persona game.

That there was apparently a "Restoration Patch" for Majora's Mask 3DS that I... wish I had learned about earlier lmao.

But yeah, here it is (in case you all can't see the hyperlinked text above):

...Also, what's a Citra?

Welp, time to learn that next...

I recall hearing something about this at one point, and it sounded like it might have some welcome updates.

I kind of wonder what tweaks we might find I Nintendo were to put together a The Legend if Zelda: The Hero of Time collection/revamp. The two games function well as a duology and, as I have considered Majora's Mask my favorite 3D Zelda game, together form a prime Zelda experience. It would actually make sense to lean into those being two parts of one thing.

I'm pretty sure that's a particular genus of (sub-/)tropical fruit-bearing tree.

But also an emulation program to play games this side of 3DS, I guess. Could be that too.

It's an emulator, for playing 3DS games on PC and Android.

The Restoration Patch has instructions for how to play on a real 3DS console or on an emulator.

Playing with Citra lets you ramp up the resolution, use an external controller and make use of the HUD mod included in the patch.

Holy shit, that's the best "realistic" Zelda has looked in, well, forever.

Looks just like how it was in Melee.

I do, but I always saw how it could play out in a different, more interesting way.

Groose, as good a guy as he turned out to be, was still very much "the unlucky friend" who was just a a side char in Link and Zelda's story. The "Third Wheel". Easy to believe that once everybody comes down to the surface, he elects to lead a portion of the population that's fine settling in the desert, and plant the seeds that would be the Gerudo tribe. Because he just didn't want to "get in the way" and be as far away from Link and Zelda as possible.

Unfortunately, that spirit of regret and longing to be reunited with "who and where he always belonged" would be inherited by his descendants. Regret that would be fostered as full-blown jealousy and rancor by the era of Ganondorf's rise, and when Demise's curse would manifest in its most capable form.

Ganondorf's "I coveted that wind" speech in WW was always pretty tragic, but especially in light of the recent developments in the series, I couldn't help but think about what if this relates to his (possible) ancestor's regrets. It's the one thing about G-dorf's agency being subsumed by "Demise made me do it!" that I could see myself liking a lot.

Eh, in general I'm not convinced by tying Groose to the Gerudo, who I see as just this other ancient civilization in Hyrule like the Shiekah who already resided on the surface and simply did not appear in Skyward Sword's Hyrule. If Groose was a 'progenitor' that just raises more questions about the Gerudo's allegiance to Hyrule, their nomadic lifestyle and religion, their all-woman population, etc.

Absolutely vibing with BOTW on my third playthrough, this time non Master Mode and really just focused on doing a three heart playthrough before taking on the Master Trials and DLC. I must beast mode my favorite Zelda before its sequel arrives!!!1 πŸ˜‚

What a fucking stellar game. An all-timer. LEGEND. :ROFLMAO:

I am once again asking you to watch this video or at least listen to it in a separate tab:

You know what? Never mind.

sorry I can't do this for 2 hours. I feel this needs a content warning for being "one of those" youtube videos where the dude constantly swears for no reason, inserts a million low quality meme pictures, makes crude jokes and talks like and edgy tween the entire time. any genuine retrospective/analysis gets lost in the shuffle. I turned it off after less than five minutes. this isn't a good showpiece for video content about zelda.

there's better out there

Yesterday I started over in BoTW. I played nearly 70 hours when the game first came out but never beat it. I only did one of the divine beasts. It's been so long but I don't even know what I was doing the whole time at that pace, lol. It's not like I was going for 100% shrine completion or korok seeds. I was just vibing, I guess!

that's the game. you start going in a direction and see what happens. I spent like 120h and I'm still missing a quarter of the shrines.

I just want to say:

I think the best thing Zelda can do in the future (hopefully in TotK, but any future game could work too) is to have more moral grayness. I'd genuinely love to see supposed "friendly" characters doing questionable-but-not-outright-evil things to achieve their goals while showing more of the bad guys having a sense of honor.

I know we've had glimpses of this such as the Gorons fighting Link in TP, Hilda's plot to save Lorule in ALBW, or the older Zoras' resentment of Link in BotW, but I'd love to see more than just glimpses. It would add a level of depth to the world of Hyrule.

Yeah, I know that morally gray fantasy has become in vogue, but Zelda has a lot to gain by following the trend rather than bucking it.

Quick BOTW sidequests question as I continue to wrap up my time with the game, trying for a three month before before ToTK.

Mild spoilers about sidequests so I'll spoiler tag...

In Kakariko Village and Gerudo Town, there's a meta reward for solving all the townspeople's sidequests. From what I remember it's the last sidequest in Kakariko involving the shrine ball thing behind Impact, and the Lightning Helm in Gerudo. Those two I've done. But are there other meta sidequests like that? That only unlock after solving all the towns issues? I suppose I did one in Tarrytown too with the wedding. So I'm wondering if I'm missing a major wrap-up sidequest like that in another town like Hateno, Zora, Goron or Rito. I did reunite Kass with his family in Rito Village.

Just a hint would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for any help!

Thinking about the next 2d games.

I’d love to see Oracle games remade in the same art style of LA remake.
Everybody wants a new original 2d Zelda so that could be an opportunity to release a third original one based on Farore. Like the one that was scrapped in the past.

Giving this thread a bump because I thought Zelda Fami might like to see the newly digitised Link's Awakening player's guide.

There's a lot of art there - not in the art style of the game itself (see the Japanese box art!), but closer to the art that I think external contractors provided for the original NES titles. I actually always liked art like this - would be fun to see a Zelda game with a kind of hand drawn, washed out, 80s/early 90s fantasy vibe.

Hey, I just did that ball quest for the first time last night. I too am on a wrapping things up run before TotK!

Can't say I know of any more meta quests like the ones you mentioned though.

Man is it just me or is A Link Between Worlds somewhat underrated whenever people are talking about the best Zelda games? For my money it's peak top down Zelda, and sits easily alongside Majora's Mask & BOTW as my favourites in the series. The entire game just feels so tightly designed so that almost every minute of gameplay is a treat. The wall-merging mechanic felt like it was explored to its fullest extent - it never left you wanting more, and delivered some of the most enjoyable and well thought-out puzzles in the franchise (I love when puzzles make me feel clever for solving them). The item renting mechanic just worked. They managed to find a risk/reward system that not only gave the player freedom to tackle whichever dungeon they wanted in any order they wanted, but also allowed for the collection of rupees to stay meaningful and satisfying throughout a play through. They even managed to make game overs feel punishing in a souls-like kind of way, where you would lose any items you were renting, so that it drove the player on to want to collect enough rupees to buy those items outright. They integrated fun little mini dungeon challenges into the game; the only prize for completing these little challenges was rupees, and in most Zelda games that would feel bad, but due to the extra importance of rupees in this game they were as satisfying as anything else in the game to beat. There was just so much packed into this 15 hour romp that it's practically begging you to 100% it, and then replay it again on hero's mode, and then again but this time make it a 3 heart challenge. I only played the game for the first time last year, so I'm not exactly clouded with nostalgia when I say this, but DAMN - 10/10 TLOZ at its finest. GOTY 2013 no questions asked for me.

it's just because everyone has played the alttps and ocarinas and winds wakers and they had 20-30 years to sit on that feeling and albw just barely turns 10 now and is trapped on 3DS in handheld ghetto without the "oh my childhood!" and "unique story" bonus that OG Link's Awakening gets.

Kicking off the thread with OoT gushing and essay linking, good stuff.

I implore people to watch this one as well. It takes video essaying and makes it art.

I didn't realise that this had finally spun off into a dedicated Zelda documentary channel.

Absolutely wonderful :')
Also a fascinating insight into Nintendo in those days. I never would have imagined that Nintendo in Japan would have taken the American localisation so seriously for some reason

Nope I'm 95-ish hours in on this new replay, done all the divine beasts, got the master sword, I'm missing 34 shrines, and I got plenty of quests including DLC quests left. For the past week or so I've been stuck in a place where to give myself enough time for the sequel I want to either stop here or rush to beat Ganon. I've been in the castle but just looting and messing around.
