Matchmaking still needs work going by the experiences here and my own. Played for an hour without a single win. That's weeeeird.

The 2 tricolor matches I played were fun at least. Hammerhead is very different than Sturgeon, this time it felt very difficult for the attackers to win given how open mid is.

Things that happened when teaming up with a friend for an hour and a half:
-Anytime "not enough players" appeared, I got kicked out of my friend's room
-When the maps updated, I got kicked out of my friend's room
-4 communication errors despite living in the same city with good internet
-Not a single Tricolour battle despite being a twosome

This is my friend's first Splatoon game and while she did enjoy herself generally she was also annoyed. Really hope they hear feedback about the Tricolour matchmaking especially.

Universal currencies

Gold (money) can be used to buy headgear, shirts, shoes, and locker items from Hotlantis, the general store. You can also spend 5,000 gold at the Shell-out machine (the gumball gacha machine in the Lobby) once per day for a random reward. Any subsequent uses of the Shell-out machine that day cost 30,000 gold. Days reset at 8PM EST.

Experience points are won from any type of non-Salmon Run or Tableturf battle and are used to level up your character, which unlocks lower weapon costs as well as earning you Conch shells (only during Splatfest).

Catalog points are for earning rewards from this season's catalog, which go up to level 100 and will be reset in three months for next season's Catalog.

Tableturf points are like Catalog points but for the Tableturf reward system. As of now the level cap is 50. Currently I'm TableTurf 33. Thanks to that, I have a unique end-battle pose that I haven't seen used by a single other person in the game this far.

Splatfest-only currencies

Clout is points for your Splatfest team. Clout is one third of the winning criteria used for judging the winning Splatfest team.

Conch shells are a Splatfest-only currency you get by leveling up your character with EXP, or by leveling up your Catalog with Catalog points. Conch shells give you one free use of the Shell-out machine. They are also used as one third of the winning criteria used for judging the winning Splatfest team (the final third is popularity).

Sea snails, not to be confused with Conch shells, are also a Splatfest-only currency that you earn for participating in Splatfest after Splatfest is over. Sea snails are a very valuable currency to be given to Murch in order to add Power levels (ability slots) to your gear, and to reroll existing abilities on your gear.

And finally, Festival shells, not to be confused with Sea snails or Conch shells, are another Splatfest-only currency that increase the odds of your team entering a 100x or 333x Splatfest battle, in which your team's resulting clout is multiplied by the respective amount. You earn Festival shells by winning 10x Splatfest battles, which occur rarely and randomly.
Can someone threadmark this? Please

With how ultra-well Splatoon 3 is doing in Japan, and with how Nintendo are making big pushes into non-game stuff, there HAS to be a Splatoon anime in the works by now, right?
They can't POSSIBLY not make a anime by now

Jeez, is anybody actually having any fun or is Splatfest just miserable for everyone but me?

Loving it! Haven’t gotten to play as much as I’d like because we have a couple of friends from out of town visiting, but it’s been a blast.

Haven’t gotten a tri-color battle yet though.

I wonder why they won't let us do friendly tricolour battles. If I select tricolour battle and end up in a team gear friendly match with 8-players, they might as well turn it into a friendly tricolour one right?

I had fun on Team Fun. Became a Fun Ruler even.

I had minimal disconnects, very short wait times (couldn’t even charge my special in the test range half the time), had a welcomely less frequent but still solid amount of tricolor, and got cut throat but fun matchmaking. Basically everything worked as it should. I totally believe everyone else’s experiences in this thread, but uh yeah nothing bad happened to me…

Same. Not a single disconnect. Short wait times. And I play exclusively over wifi too.

Also, this is the best Splatfest theming for the plaza yet. Wow they really made it come alive. Love playing at night and makes me wish the game at all times reflected real world time and we’d get stages during the day, dusk, and night.

That’d be super cool. Definitely had some tonal whiplash when I was playing during the day and it’s night out lol.

For real, the bridge map with the ferris wheel in the background is too lovely to keep for just Splatfests. Would love it if the game was on some sort of day-night rotation.

Finishing up Gear Ruler +2 without a single Tricolour. I think my Inkling is cursed.

Still had fun though, had about a 70% win rate with my N-zap, it's so good at painting and taking down enemies.

Hey, remember when the grand majority of the player base was like, "Tricolor battles sucked! I'm sure glad they'll be less frequent now!"

Haha, welp.

Jeez, is anybody actually having any fun or is Splatfest just miserable for everyone but me?
I do feel like we're more...on edge? I feel like it's a combination of the servers being more jammed than usual (and the longer queues and disconnects that follow), the team based aspect of things, and the better players who would normally stick to ranked now playing Turf War mixed with more casual players here for the event and rewards leading to a wild medley of...well, this. I don't think this a Fami exclusive feeling either.

For what it's worth, I'm enjoying myself, but I feel like I'm losing a lot more than usual, and there's a part of me that's eager to go back to Ranked. But I'm also in a place where I actively want to learn and understand Ranked moreso than the previous games, so take that as you will.

Yeah, the whole game needs adjusting when it comes to playing with friends and communicating with other players. They make it so hard that the incentives to keep playing are just not there if you're not already very much into it.

Have barely had chance to try the splatfest, only been able to do one match and if it ends before 12 my time that's probably all I'll have been able to do which is a bit sad. I did win at least.

Guys… for real, has this game been hacked? Some people using blasters have a fire rate much faster than normal…. It’s really strange…

I’m 99% some people have hacked this. They are shooting too fast.

There's 1 reported case of someone hacking, but it's more likely you might have been seeing a clash blaster or a rapid blaster, or someone lagging.

Alright, exactly 20 turf wars into the Splatfest. No tri battles yet, but it's a good time to take stock and see if it's been as bad as I thought.

Tally:
4 wins, 16 losses.
18 kills, 95 deaths.

This is absolutely miserable. I'm usually average or better at shooters. I almost always enjoy them. But each Splatoon game has a very specific way of making you feel utterly and totally incompetent. It's a shame because I love everything else about the game. But knowing I'm just fucking up other people's days by not being able to hit air... I'm out.

I’m having fun, but boy do I feel like a scrub. yes I am trying to git gud but please let me play with other scrubs until I do

Yup… that weapon was clash blaster.

Totally broken.

Not only the shooting goes too far, but the fire rate is out of this world. Totally broken weapon.

You can get to a higher ground and just spam.

What the hell. Splatoon 3 is very unbalanced right now.

I hadn't thought that matchmaking might be to blame, but... yeah. Why am I playing against guys so superior to me?

The tough thing to realize is that how much turf you yourself ink is irrelevant, really. It's all about who gets more kills. The team with a better KD ratio seems to always win. I usually have between 1100-1300p in inked turf but it never matters because I usually have 5 more deaths than kills, so I'm out of the game way too long. I can get 1400-1500p inked turf, and we still end up with only about 800p and lose 60%-30%.

I'm having a blast, the only reason I stopped is because my arm was beginning to hurt due to the covid vaccine booster.

From what I recall the clash blaster has a short range. As long as you're not heading straight at them you should be able to pick them off.

Yeah, the tricolour battles were a significant part of the advertising, and I've just finished up my first splatfest (no time left to play) and I didn't see a single one.

That's really shitty.

It's one of the weakest weapons in the game, with an extremely slow kill time and very bad range/painting capacity/movement

And Splatoon 3 is one of the most balanced games out there.

I started playing today, and I came across two tricolor battles in my first hour.

Then I hope onto in the Internet and apparently this is a rare thing? Huh.

Edit: I did pick Team Fun fwiw, so maybe that's it.

First impressions are decent though on the whole! The first Splatoon really hooked me but the second was more of a casual thing - though I still bought and loved the Octo Expansion - so I'm hopeful the third entry will hook me a little more.

Do you ever have an amazing run, like 7 wins a row, and then get dabbed on immediately closing the game? Because I do.

Y'all aware they did this, right.

tl;dr they realized Tricolor Battles weren't balanced in the Splatfest World Premiere, they didn't have time to implement fixes in time for this one, so they just made them rarer. It's likely going to be easier to get into one by the next one.

Somehow got 3 10x battles in a row, but still no 100x battle yet this splatfest

They shouldn't have done that. The problem with the demo splatfest was that Sturgeon was too tilted towards the attackers due to mid's raised platform, not that it was played too much. Hammerhead is much better balanced so people would have enjoyed playing on it at the same rate that they did in the demo. They overcorrected and made the problem worse.

It's not balancing it being played too much, mind you. It's "they need to take the mode out back and rework it, but there was no time to do it before this Splatfest". So instead of just not making it available until they finish reworking it, they just made it rarer so it doesn't contribute to splatfest results too much.

The problem wasn't it being played too much though, the map was just bad and not fun to play on. Hammerhead is good so it's a shame it's being wasted.

They should have just made Tri-color wins worth more for the team at a disadvantage if the results were that unbalanced. It's the new mode, everyone wants to try it, many can't. I gave up trying.

This is ridiculously helpful. You da best, poop.

I had a 14 wins run where my trustworthy Splattershot Professional and it Feelsgoodman. Angle shooter is a trash sub weapon though. The crab is cool, as long as you learn to keep your distance.

Aerosprays have it rough in this game; not only is their weapon one of the weakest, but Nintendo decided to disrespect them so much they gave them a suicidal special. The sploosh-o-matic is a bit disappointing so far. I liked it in Splatoon 2. Here, not so much.
