Yeah, normally I think a lot of the things regarding Nintendo is very much absurd hyperbole. I even think the 20 I am paying a year is more than fair for NSO (which I like and use a lot), cloud saves, and the 99 games.

But this is..... give me an option without the DLC at a lower price! I will literally buy the DLC straight out because I had planned to buy the DLC and want to keep it.

Every so often Nintendo will walk back on something - remember the original plan was to have 1 or 2 rotating classic games a month? Then they backtracked.

I really hope so.
Don't worry, your tagline is still correct. NSO is fine. It's NSO + Expansion Pack that's more... erm... questionable.

I can't justify that price. When the NSO first came, I waited to SNES to justify the price.... this expaqnsion pack requires at least 3 more systems to justify the value...Sorry I will pass. Unfortunately this is going to succeed

I have a family plan, covers me, wife, kid. And then I have 5 people attached to it that don't pay because I was not gonna charge them 3 bucks for 34.99 a year. Now I may have to clean house lol

Eh if you're going to grab the AC DLC anyway, the price is well justified already. If not, wait for more systems to come as you said and it'll balance out.

If they keep adding other systems without bumping the price; then I'm fine with this price increase.

If they keep bumping the price with each system added; then I'll complain on Famiboards but still pay for the upgrade.

There would have to be a substantial upgrade like Sega Saturn Panzer Dragoon Saga big in order to justify another price increase.

Seriously though. I can't see a third tier coming unless they are adding stuff like Switch first party games.

My hope is that DLC for first party Nintendo games are routinely put up for free on the expansion pack like the Animal Crossing one and with the increase in money Nintendo can get third parties to agree to have their old games release on the virtual consoles.

Shall someone make a separate thread with discussion on just the games/N64 higher resolution details? Maybe someone with keen eyes could spot what resolution these are now running at? 😁

Nintendo is getting blasted for this lol. I hope they take the price down by ten bucks, that seems reasonable.
At the end of the day. No one has to pay for anything so raging folks online isn’t gonna do anything about this lol.

Only way you could see something is if hardly nobody subscribes but that’s not happening.

Nintendo is doing the opposite from Sony where $70 equals €80. As an European I can't complain about this pricing, but sucks if you live in America.

Well, maybe not. Cause I can see AC diehards just playing for the DLC instead of renting it. And then just keep the regular 20 a year plan

So..... not a defense, just an observation reading here... since $20/yr is fine for some people (myself included) but $50 is too much... can the Fami-gods create a network on here where 4-8 strangers (whom otherwise cannot find other people to join) can get together on a family plan? I feel like that would be a wonderful purpose for this forum. Please and thank you.

this seems like a good idea, although im personally not interested in n64 and genesis roms, i havent really played nes and snes stuff on the switch tbh. But i bet there will be people interested here

I haven't seen ANYBODY interested in this with the current price, and it's not necessary so a good portion of the general public won't buy it. The audience for this is extremely limited.

... why?? The games are already on the eshop and 9/10 people are more excited for 64 or Gameboy lol

Yeah, I honestly don't understand why Nintendo didn't just go with N64 and GBA, much more interesting package that way. Sega already sells their own collections as you said.

Unfortunately, the Sega collection on the eshop sucks :( I was so disappointed in the emulation quality on that one. They should have had M2 do it.

Either that or they need to come out and assure that there will be more consistent updates to the NSO with the new pass.
That’s what’s holding me back. I will likely get it for the animal crossing DLC (though might want that permanently seeing as how some of that stuff changes your island). I want more reassurance on future releases before spending money.

MUSHA, in the Genesis collection, goes for ~$300. Not Saga level, but still pretty pricy.

Yeah, the video looked noticeably better.

I still can't believe it's not 50 euro's usually nintendo does a us dollars is euro conversion or worse. I do feel worst for my aussie and canadian mates. That 99 price tag looks crazy.

I can't believe this would be a hot take, but if Nintendo had announced back in 2017 that their online service would cost $50 per year (or $80 for a family plan of up to 8 people), then for a potential price of $10 PER YEAR would get:

-Access to Online Gaming and Services, including Cloud Backup

-58 NES Games

-49 SNES Games

-16 N64 Games

-14 Sega Genesis Games

-More games to the above services to come in the future

-Free promotional games (Tetris 99, Pac-Man 99, Super Mario Bros. 35, etc)

-A DLC campaign for Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Would people still say this was a bad deal?

Um you don’t need NSO to watch youtube, you should just drop to an individual

I dont need NSO to watch youtube sure, but that's not the issue per say. The issue is I cant play digital games on my Switch (secondary) at the same time someone (my daughter) is watching youtube on the Lite (primary) if I dont have a family account.

Honest question, where can one find more information about specifics?

I might end up getting the AC DLC by itself, but my friend wants to share the new expansion pack with me with a family plan.

How does that work? Will it matter who has the main account? I wont't be getting anything from the DLC rental, since I'd rather buy it, so would it help my friend more if he got to be the main account?

Ordered my N64 controller after Wario64's tweet before I saw the pricing. Was expecting my family plan to bump to $50 or maybe $60 at the most. Won't be pulling the trigger at this cost unless they outline future updates and added value.

In related news: anyone want to buy an N64 controller? lol

^^^^^^ people are wild

Licensing costs are likely the main reason why the expansion price got a huge price hike.

Getting Sega and MS/Rare on board with NSO did not come cheap.

Honestly, if this is the case, to me Genesis and Banjo are not even close to worth this price hike. They should’ve put the GameBoy lineup in there for a much more moderate price hike instead. Oh well.

I was never expecting just a tenner like most people. Was expecting around 20 and in Europe its what we got. I will bite as there's plenty of enjoyment to be had for €20 extra playing N64 and Megadrive games for a year. Doubt I will renew after the 1st year though.
Would assume nearly all worthwhile N64 games would be out by then.

A 150% increase in the US must be hard to swallow though.

I would say the complaint would be spending $50 just for online, while other companies offer the same service but with free monthly games. No matter how you slice it, the current offer is a bit too small to justify the tag. That said, assuming nintendo expands this premium service to other DLC expansions, this could be more palatable.

I hope that there are nook miles quests to guide us through this new content, and that the new phone tutorial app is smart to adjust for existing players and isn't a nuisance telling us the basics

Also I kind of wish v2 came out now ahead of the DLC... this is a lot to sink our teeth into at once LOL

A few thoughts:

1) They're adding 3rd party games from major companies here (Konami, Rare, the Strider license, Sega, etc) which is something that never happened on the NES/SNES apps and will take profit-sharing to accomplish. I bet that's an indication for the future direction of their strategy and also a bit of a reaction to all of the various eshop collections creating a bit of a messy state for retro sales. I would not be surprised at all to see this slowly morph into a retro "gamepass"-style collective package offering as time rolls by, but it will definitely take a while to get there.

2) The Animal Crossing DLC being included seems like a way to get a quick revenue stream and userbase on day 1 which can help work out further licensing deals. I'm sure many people will just throw in the extra $5 for the upgrade based on the fact that they were planning to buy the AC DLC anyways - this way Nintendo can start to float projections and make some investments based on that rather than needing to work out the full incentive structure for blanket subscribers beforehand. There isn't a huge reason for them to try bundling that otherwise as I'm sure it would have sold very high on it's own regardless.

3) I have a feeling that they'll keep doing value-adds at strategic moments to both increase and retain that userbase. It wouldn't surprise me at all, for example, if the gameboy platforms were added about a year from now along with another key DLC inclusion for a popular game to bundle in a different audience. They don't need everyone to think that this is the best package of content ever put together - they just need to get this up and running and add later. This will have the added bonus of creating new buzz at each announcement, and creating a perception that "it's an even better value than before" for newcomers. Moving forward they can probably incentivize separated userbases to try out alternative titles based on inclusion of elements/bonuses/dlc that requires base game purchase as well. In other words, I think Nintendo is probably looking at this as the beginning of cultivating a subscription audience more than it is a content sale.

Honestly, I probably wouldn't have bit into this if it was just N64 and Genesis, but my current online family plan has three separate Animal Crossing users - each with their own console. All will want the AC DLC. So it seems like it will actually be a cost-savings to just buy the family plan online upgrade here and get that for all of them....seems like a pretty good deal for that scenario.

You’re forgetting why most peeps pay for an online service, for the online, which Nintendo is never up to date on. Their online service structure isn't good. Especially when compared to xbox and playstation the fact they are in the gaming market and are providing a service means they will be compared and should be compared to the competition. No texts, very gimmicky voice chat system, laggy online experience.

39.99€ is not a bad annual price. I still don't think I'll upgrade right now though... I love the N64 titles, but I have so much backlog on Switch that I wouldn't know when to play them.

I still think Nintendo needs to work on it though.... including more DLC or full games.

I'll buy the AC expansion separately.

Skipping this, this is ridiculously overpriced for the service they offer.

Actually...probably not. In a vacuum, I don't think $50 for NSO+Expansion is all that bad of a deal. But when you compare it to the $20 base plan, it comes out looking awful. And since I have the option to pay $20 for online and a decent collection of retro software, there's just no real incentive to pay an additional $30, at least right now (for me).

What the absolute fuck

I hope Dark Cloud is right and there's a bunch of extra perks Nintendo has yet to mention, because god damn.
Of course there will be.

When NSO first released, we paid $20/yr. for just the NES NSO app eith an incomplete roster.

As time went on, new games were added, as well as an entirely new system (SNES) and new games.

The same will happen with this new tier. For example, when Game Boy eventually ends up on NSO, I could see the base tier receiving GB/GBC and the higher tier receiving GB/GBC plus Game Boy Advance.

The intention is to introduce the paid tier first, and then follow it up with value add-ons. It's nothing new, and will "feel more fair" as time goes on

They also have been doing weekly game trials about monthly/bimonthly. So if you can manage to plow through those games, you are essentially getting 6 plus retail games for free a year (even more if you create Japanese accounts).

Terrible pricing, Im out. Not interested in paying this. Paying for online itself felt like a scam as I mainly play on PC. Im also not really much into AC anymore, which makes this feel especially crappy.

Greedy pricks.

What the hell? This is way too expensive. I don’t even own Animal Crossing, I don’t care about some DLC. I was really expecting a $10 increase, maybe $20 at most. I’m probably gonna hold off on this until it has like 40 games that I absolutely want to play.

Might still buy those controllers, although those are also crazy expensive, but damn I want them.

Wonder what people are gonna do in 6 months when Ninty announces Mario Kart 8 Deluxe — Expansion Pass (16 brand new tracks + story mode), added to and exclusively on Nintendo Switch Online — Expansion Pack

I knew Nintendo would keep creeping up the price of NSO until it was inline with Xbox Live Gold / PlayStation Plus; I just wasn't expecting them to take such a big jump with the N64/Genesis games.

I'm still expecting one more price jump either next year or the following to bring their yearly total to $60.

they really need more compelling software offerings for this service... not just old games that I frequently forget are there...
I do wonder if they'll start including more DLC as part of the membership.
