Steam the current status of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (official PC support is ending January 1, 2024)

as you might have heard, Valve recently dropped Counter-Strike 2 a few days ago. but rather than it being a traditional new release, the game has completely replaced Counter-Strike Global Offensive off the store. hijacking basically every aspect from the achievements to the user reviews.

Valve has generally tried to make the transistion simple by ensuring all of your progress & inventory is carried over, but also having access to the original version would have good for preservation purposes.
and Valve actually did this, albeit completely buried with zero publicity. there's a "beta" branch hidden in Counter-Strike 2's Steam library options labeled "csgo_legacy" which is an untouched copy of GO as it was prior to 2's launch. the official servers are down, but community ones can still be made, or you can play offline with bots and through LAN.

Valve's only acknowledgement that the branch even exists is part of a support article that was uploaded today. explaining that Counter-Strike 2 will not get support for Mac or 32-bit Windows. and promising refunds on the Prime Status Upgrade for anyone still using those platforms.
Counter-Strike 2 represents the largest technical leap in CS history, and our goal is to continue to develop Counter-Strike for years to come.

As technology advances, we have made the difficult decision to discontinue support for older hardware, including DirectX 9 and 32-bit operating systems. Similarly, we will no longer support macOS. Combined, these represented less than one percent of active CS:GO players.

Moving forward, Counter-Strike 2 will exclusively support 64-bit Windows and Linux.

If you are unable to launch Counter-Strike 2 with your current hardware, you can access a legacy version of CS:GO. Support for this version of CS:GO will end on January 1, 2024.

I can't run CS2 because I run DirectX 9 or a 32-bit version of Windows. Am I eligible for a Prime Status Upgrade refund?

DirectX 9 and/or 32-bit Windows users are eligible for a Prime Status Upgrade refund if their purchase was made on Steam between the announcement of the Counter-Strike 2 Limited Test (March 22, 2023) and the launch of Counter-Strike 2 (September 27, 2023).

CD keys, gifts, and accounts with bans are not eligible for a refund.

I can't run CS2 because I play on a Mac. Am I eligible for a Prime Status Upgrade refund?

macOS users are eligible for a refund if most of their CS:GO playtime was on macOS and they played CS:GO on a Mac between the announcement of the Counter-Strike 2 Limited Test (March 22, 2023) and the launch of Counter-Strike 2 (September 27, 2023), regardless of when they purchased their Prime Status Upgrade.

CD keys, gifts, and accounts with bans are not eligible for a refund.
all well and good, but it still feels rather unusual to see the game get 100% replaced like this. though it's not the only title this happened to, Overwatch went through the same process.

as an aside. it's also worth bringing up CS2's current status on Windows 7, considering Valve's rather questionable move (owing to the current PC landscape of the launcher being practically required to run basically any major game released after around 2010-2012) of ending Steam support on the platform next year.
reportedly the closed beta surprisingly worked without issue on the OS. but the final release has made changes to Valve Anti-Cheat that have caused the game to more-or-less only work offline. there are allegedly ways to work around this, but it's not recommended due to the potential of them tripping up said Anti-Cheat and causing a ban.

then there's the matter of the console ports. which fit into a more unique preservation niche as they never gotten any of the updates the PC version had.
the PS3 version had it's servers killed thanks to GPDR and Sony refusing to let Valve (both it and Portal 2 on the same console used a console-based offshoot of the actual Steam servers) update the game so it legally fits within that law.
but the 360 version technically still works online. the servers are perfectly fine, and the game is backwards compatible on the Xbox One/Series. but the problem is that the game was part of the initial delisting wave of 360 titles back in January prior to the impending full marketplace shutdown, and the title isn't even purchasable on the Xbox One marketplace now.

as such, all versions of the game are now currently locked in this limbo. the PC build is heavily buried and requires configuring to access, while the console ports are completely lost forever.
