Reviews STAR OCEAN THE SECOND STORY R | Review Thread

Gamespot (8/10):
Star Ocean: The Second Story R strikes a good balance of retro and modernity with its throwback visuals and new combat mechanics.

Destructoid (9/10):
Star Ocean: The Second Story R recaptures all the otherworldly wonder of its PlayStation predecessor. The rough edges of the original are now smooth to the touch, and the enhanced visuals amplify that classic pixel art aesthetic in a way that few remakes pull off. It’s a thoughtful snapshot encapsulating RPGs of the era, retaining all the passion and whimsy I remember so fondly. I loved this look back at Star Ocean‘s past, and I hope this marks a new beginning for the series’ future.

GamingTrend (7/10):
Star Ocean The Second Story R is a wildly inconsistent package, with the ending portions falling off greatly in quality, but still a mostly fun game. Battle and its surrounding systems can have a lot of variation depending on your party and how you choose to play. However, it lacks polish in many areas making it very difficult to want to finish.

Wccftech (9/10):
Star Ocean: The Second Story R is, hands down, the best entry in the series, and one of the best remakes ever made. With the excellent combat reworking, massive slew of quality of life improvements and impressive 2D-HD visuals that make the game's simple yet engaging story and charming characters even more enjoyable, Gemdrops has set a very high bar for classic JRPGs remakes that will be very difficult to top.

Push Square (8/10):
Star Ocean The Second Story R is exactly what it needs to be: a faithful remake of a classic PS1 RPG that greatly enhances the experience for both new and returning players. A wonderful visual overhaul combined with numerous quality of life improvements and expanded battle mechanics make this a borderline must-play for anyone who's looking for an old-school adventure. Although the underlying PS1-era design does still have some rough edges - particularly in the storytelling and combat balance - it's hard to knock such a well crafted revival.

Nintendo Life (9/10):
In a year overflowing with outstanding new RPGs, Star Ocean: The Second Story R is among the very best of them. This revival of a PlayStation classic does a thorough job of mixing modern game design and artistic elements with old-school sensibilities to make for one of the most impressive RPG releases of 2023. A lengthy, player-driven story, thrilling combat system, gorgeous new visual style, and remixed soundtrack all come together to make this one of the easiest recommendations we can make to any RPG fan. If you're even vaguely interested in picking this up, we'd encourage you to do so as soon as you can; Star Ocean: The Second Story R is comfortably the best entry in this series.

Atomix (90/100):
Star Ocean: The Second Story R is much more than a visual remake of the PlayStation classic. Gemdrops reworked a lot of the gameplay system and also aded tons of quality of life improvements that resulted in a better game than the original. A 2023 surprise, no doubt.

RPG Fan (92%):
I can't think of a remake of a game that feels more definitive than this one. All fans of the original deserve to play Star Ocean: The Second Story R, and so does everyone else.

Press Start (9.5/10):
Star Ocean: The Second Story R is a tremendous remake. It gives the original game a visual overhaul that is simultaneously modern and nostalgic. But it doesn't stop there. It breaks open the mechanics to offer much more depth without destroying the spirit of the original. It's far and away the best way to experience one of the best Star Ocean games and one of the best RPGs ever made. If you're a fan of the genre, you owe it to yourself to check out The Second Story R. It's an absolute gem of a game that's endlessly playable and effortlessly stylish.

CGMagazine (8.5/10):
Star Ocean The Second Story R is a lovingly-crafted remaster of a golden age RPG that offers a replayable and approachably complex adventure.

Spaziogames (8/10, Review in Italian):
Seeme like Square Enix has finally found a way to give value to its enormous catalogues of great JRPGs: after Live a Live and Tactics Ogre Reborn, Star Ocean Second Story R marks the third successful entry in this newfound current of remakes. A great journey for both veterans of the genre and newcomers.

PSX Brasil (9/10):
Star Ocean: The Second Story R is a great remake not only of an excellent Action RPG, but of one of the best and most influential games of the golden age of JRPGs. With a unique and pleasant look, considerable novelties in its gameplay that will keep even long-time players engaged, and several quality-of-life improvements, Star Ocean: The Second Story R is a must-have for fans of the genre.

Siliconera (9/10):
Star Ocean The Second Story is among its best games in the series, and I believe the R release cements its role as the strongest entry.

Checkpoint Gaming (8.5/10):
Star Ocean: The Second Story R serves as a reminder from Square Enix that this is an RPG property not to be ignored. On offer is one of the most enjoyable of its genre I've played in some time with a heartfelt story, colourful cast, and a wonderful fusion of both fantasy and science fiction goodness. The quality doesn't end there, though. Deep leveling and specialistion systems make for meaningful refining of your party, becoming more self-sufficient the further along you get. This complements some battle encounters that are deeper than many other RPGs on the market, always keeping you on your toes. One or two quality-of-life additions that could've been better implemented aren't a worry for long when you also consider how gorgeous the world of Expel really is, with its characters popping off your screen. A killer title to convert newcomers and satiate longtime fans, this remake is one for all and all for one. Star Ocean forever.

Digital Chumps (9/10):
Star Ocean The Second Story R may well serve as the blueprint going forward if Square Enix or any other developer wishes to remake games from this classic era of RPGs. An unquestionably gorgeous art style uplifts all modern touches, breathing life into a 25-year-old game.

87 from 15 reviews on MC so far. i'd say if this stays above an 85, that's a pretty good showing!

think this'll get to 50 reviews?

(Damn is making review threads such a pita.)

Game sounds great. A wonderfully realized remake project which not only goes all out with QoL features but also expands significantly on the original, reworking and deepening several gameplay elements.

All of the pre-release material was showing a ton of promise and it looks like Gemdrops really delivered here.

Wonder what kind of conversation this might kick-start between SE and tri-Ace if it's also successful commercially. Remaking SO1 (again) in 2R's style? (Yes, please). Or heck, developing the next mainline Star Ocean with 2R's retro visual identity? Don't think tri-Ace would be too thrilled though it's definitely an intriguing scenario.

Dang, those are some nice reviews

I know basically nothing about the original, but I'm for sure picking this up at some point

Really enjoyed the demo (the first 3 hours or so of the game). Looking forward to continuing the story

Good scores, still need to play the demo. I'll probably pick either this or SMRPG to play in December.

Hey so it seems that the game is complete on the cartridge. The only thing the download is for is extra languages. Japanese and English are on the cart.

For the US release? I see that required download graphic and run every time. I had this game preordered for a while, but now I'm confused.

Do I need to buy the EU version with the big 12 on the box?

i can't find anything to 100% confirm this but, on the back of the packaging it does say download of 3GB - the whole game on eShop is nearly 12GB. so, it does seem like at least the entire game doesn't need to be downloaded.

So does the US version require the download to play? If not maybe the Japanese version has English text and audio? Trying to figure out which version to get.

Sorry for the late reply, just needed to confirm.

Per the NA Square Enix site it says "Internet connection and download required to access additional languages and bug fixes."

Great! It looks like the game turned out as good as the previews promised. Will be my next game after Mario Wonder.

Another quality release incoming. Hope this does well, sales wise, would love more of the back catalogue (from both Squaresoft and the Enix sides) to get this kind of attention and for Gemdrops to do them.

no idea what I’m getting into with this game but super excited. too much to play tbh but the rest might have to get parked - I really want a handheld jrpg rn

amazing! thank you for further confirming.

seems the worry was largely unnecessary.

You're welcome! I understand completely as I had the same concern a week ago. I dug a bit deeper and found this too. It's not ideal for everyone that is non-English or Japanese speakers but it's fine enough.

If you want, there's a thread that covers the announcement of the game and numerous fami-members talk about the original game and what is new / improved in the remake :).

Oh for me it’s a bit of a treat to go in blind so I don’t mind. I just never played the original. Was happy to see a solid meta when I woke up, and that’s pretty much enough for me.

I really hope this sells good. Tales of Symphonia remaster reached #4 spot on eShop, and this amazing remake deserves a similar success much more than that broken remaster. We need to change Tri-ace mind about the direction the series have right now: No more bloated high budget games and more of... THIS!

I also hope reviews alone make Square want to bring SO3 and 4 to Switch too. It's been around 20 years since I finished SO3, would wanna go for that again. I know it has its haters but I liked it.

do I need to play first departure to understand/appreciate the story to the fullest?
Not really, all the games happens in the same universe but each story is self contained, there are some easter egg and callbacks but nothing that will affect the story of the game

So I'm pretty sure the Switch physical version is sold out on all retailers here in the US.

My Amazon preorder isn't showing a release timing right now. Welp! I don't mind, I have other games to play at the moment.

edit: Just reeeeally low stock. Managed to get one of the two remaining at my nearest Best Buy. Rip Amazon!

Picked up my copy not too long ago and decided to download the update so it can be ready to play later tonight and it ended up being 833 MB. Unless there is a bigger one in the wings for later I think any concern about that can be laid to rest.

Picked up my copy from JBHifi yesterday. I had it preordered, but despite that they spent about 10 minutes searching for my preorder, only to come up empty handed, and ended up giving me the single copy they had that wasn’t on preorder.

Oof.

Reviews are better than I expected based on playing the demo. It felt inconsistent to me.

Played around 2h30 on PS5 and... what a blast it is.

Disclaimer : like a lot of modern RPGs (oh hi all Yakuza games !), there is a LOT of dialogue especially in the first hours but as soon as Claude and Rena joins to get to Krosse, the massive dialogues take a bit of a break.

Also : do not hesitate to check the Fast Travel map because it shows where time limited events are available (most of the time it is private actions you can activate anytime by pressing Square / Y on Switch / X on PC with a Xbox Controller).

I'm going to Krosse and can't wait to finally access to the Skill Guild ^^.

Played some on my OLED Switch earlier today and it's a real nice looking game.

Also laughed a bit when I saw the disclaimer on the back of my copy, that if I didnt have basic reading ability I probably wouldnt enjoy this game lol.
Maybe it's on more games but the first time I see it

Some people really don't like games when they have to read a lot. More common then you'd think.
