Q: Regarding information security measures, KADOKAWA was recently attacked and was unable to broadcast Nintendo Direct on Niconico Live Broadcasting.
There was also a story about an insider leaking information on YouTube.
I would like to know what kind of investments you are making and what measures you have in place regarding information security.
A: We have become aware of the specific issues pointed out through media reports and other sources.
We work with specialist companies to diagnose information security and take various other measures.
The company has introduced information security management as part of its internal information security system, and is also working on continuous education for employees.
Bird is cooked it seems

This reads more like a response to the Kadokawa fiasco than to "Pyoro leaked the Nintendo Direct" to me
This.

Pyoro is probably not that noteworthy for them compared to the Kadokawa breach. And Pyoro was just someone who could get into the Nintendo listings just before they got announced, not because of some insider(source).

This.

It's a very coincidental timing that this statement happened shortly after they stamp out whatever method Pyoro was using if that wasn't a concern for them.

They're no doubt also concerned about the kadokawa thing but it isn't one or the other and evidently they wanted to take action against direct leaking too, which makes sense shortly before they'll have a new console and its lineup to announce.

I desperately want Nintendo's next movie collaboration to be with Scorsese and De Niro. I want it to be a retelling of the actual company history of Nintendo. Just imagine the Casino 'Cheater's Justice' scene re-made to show how to spot leakers.

I do not endorse what Robert De Niro does next. Content warning for the full video.

Please watch the movie, though.
But not at work.
Again, content warning.

To be honest, while it's fun to get leaks, especially when it's hardware related. I could do without software leaks. I love those moments where out of the blue Nintendo is like "Now here's an Eternal Darkness reboot we're working exclusively with Capcom on"

I think if I heard "Nintendo is working with a well known Japanese Developer on rebooting Eternal Darkness Franchise" say a year before, and then small leaks kept on getting out my hype is tainted.

However I absolutely live for hardware leaks though.

The what fiasco?
As stated in the first half of the question, Kadokawa (a Japanese media conglomerate) had a massive data breach. As part of them recovering from the breach, the video sharing site NicoNico, which they own, had to be taken down for a few days for the next month or so (which is why the last Nintendo Direct only aired on YouTube over in Japan).

On the general subject, is there a dedicated thread or area of discussion for all the Q&A questions? Not sure where to look for the unofficial translations until Nintendo gets around to it

I went to GameStop today to pick up a couple preorders, and the store manager told me that the new Direct games still aren’t in the system for preorder. Apparently, the store’s Nintendo rep said that Nintendo of America employees weren’t aware of the games that would be announced in the Direct; that information was only made available to employees in Japan. This rep told the manager that American employees were caught off guard by the Direct’s reveals, and that they had all assumed there would be more announced in the Direct than what they were told in advance.

Interesting to see Nintendo cracking down on leaks in a variety of ways.

I’m starting to wonder if this is also why they’ve started divulging less information about the development teams on their games of late. With ransomware attacks increasing globally it would make a lot of sense to not highlight partners until after release in order to lower the risk of them being attack as opposed to the HQ itself. Especially when people are WFH more than a few years ago and security is going to be laxer as a result. All it takes is one employee falling victim to an attack and suddenly you’ve got a major problem on their hands.

EDIT: This also had the effect of giving leakers fewer targets to go after too. I imagine it’s not that hard to scrape employee information out of social networking sites and go from there. Or to probe their websites for information that isn’t ready for public consumption yet.

Whoa, the next Nintendo Direct got dark all of a sudden....

this is probably untrue, the content lab knew what would be in the direct.
The global cut of the direct is also different from the Japanese one.

Pyoro leaked a game that's in the Japanese eshop because that game was one of the few that went up on the eshop.

I must say, watching the Direct this time round without spoilers for the first party reveals beforehand was more exciting.
Agreed. The only thing that wasn't too surprising, but surprising at the same time was Zelda. I think it was PapaGenos that was hinting at a new 2D game with playable Zelda before the Direct.

Good. Frankly, I don't understand leak culture to begin with. Game announcements and trailers are exciting on their own, I don't need cryptic teases and insider drama to keep me interested.

That’s the best way to do it. Less people know the less can leak.

Agreed. I don't know how many people were told what games would be in the Direct but honestly I think the ones editing the Direct's are the only ones needing to know, and of course the people who work on the games in the Direct.

I agree. The only people who should know what’s in the Direct is Takahashi, anyone who needs to work on the direct or those who have their game in the Direct. I wouldn’t even tell furukawa

Honestly I enjoy following the leaks. I liked following Pyoro honestly, mainly because Pyoro would confirm or debunk rumors. It was great knowing ahead of time also if a Direct was happening. I don't know how much this will impact finding out about Directs ahead of time.

This is it. I want to know the Switch 2 has been delayed until 2025 so I don't get carried away or hyped over nothing. I love hearing tidbits about the system and putting together clues like a really shit, slow detective. But ultimately, I don't want to know what it's called or what it looks like ahead or any of the games coming, because I want to be bowled over by the reveal presentation where they give me everything I've ever wanted.

I still remember everything around watching the Switch reveal. I don't remember where I was for any leak, and I remember so much less clearly last year's Direct that got leaked in it's entirety.

🌃 knowing what games are coming out ahead of time is just kind if boring. The only leaks I really care for are stuff like the poksmon gold spaceworld demo or other pre release material I guess. Always liked behind the scenes f3autres on DVD special editions

Direct dates have been leaked from other sources in the past before, and more importantly, Directs air at a regular cadence so it’s always easy to have reasonable certainty about when a Direct will air (weeks 2 or 3 in February, June, September). There are breaks in the pattern sometimes (we might get a Mini instead of a full one for example) but the pattern holds well enough that we don’t need to rely on Pyoro to tell us.

It'd be nice if companies didn't have to spend extra resources and time and money to ensure things don't get leaked, but unfortunately we can't have nice things.

I agree, plus some folks have taken leaking to a nigh cultish level; leakers have followers that defend and kiss up to them until their dying breath, and the leakers themselves are almost always complete narcs who happily feed off of that attention.

Waiting patiently for games to be revealed normally is the new hip thing to do.
