Fun Club I love when video game worlds feel real and immersive, but one thing that always takes me out of that immersion is when there are no bathrooms.

How long until dril shares this thread?

I don’t disagree, but how many people want to go waltzing into a bathroom to just look around.

Best video game bathroom is definitely Facility in Golden Eye.
I just need to know the bathroom is there. If I know for a fact the bathroom isn’t there, it ruin my immersion.

No I’m not okay

Think about Digimon World and how your pet can and will shit anywhere

What I’m saying is, anything can be the bathroom if you try hard enough

I know this is a joke post and I shouldn't take it too seriously, but there's an obvious, well-known reason why most developers omit bathrooms even in otherwise "realistic" game worlds: bathrooms were already perfected in The Sims and nobody wants to risk a comparison they cannot possibly live up to
Nah, it's because bathrooms have mirrors, and no developer in their right mind wants to put a mirror in their game

I’ve been meaning to go back to Dragon Quest Builders 2 for a while. With how it’s water tiles work, I’m sure I could build a whole RPG town with a functional sanitation system…

Bathrooms are too next gen for the Switch's hardware. With the coming of the Switch 2 later this year, though, I expect bathrooms to be heavily featured in first-party games.

if your animal crossing house doesn't have a bathroom then fuck you
That's why there's a lake right in front of my New Horizons house. I like to poop out in the open. It fertilizes the soil and it gives my trees and flowers a lively hue. Does it count?

I absolutely get it, I have the same issue with the fact heroes never change clothes, especially with the Final Fantasy series (I have no idea why this series in particular).

They walk and run for weeks through woods and swamps, carry an inventory as big as an IKEA store, fight giant monsters with heavy weapons... and NEVER change clothes! The stench on these characters must be so unbearable, that's all I can think of when I play...

If you've not played Control there are bathrooms everywhere. And very occasionally there are secrets in them. And I am with you, that I start to wonder, where do these people poop!?!

But halfway through Control I started to say to myself WHY AM I SPENDING SO MUCH TIME IN THESE BATHROOMS?!?

You got bathrooms in the dorm rooms of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, and even an all-gender bathroom in Kitakami Village's visitor center! Progressive!

Important preface: I don’t want to see anyone using the bathroom. That’s not what this is about.

Pretty much all living creatures on earth have to get rid of bodily waste. That’s just a fact. When I see a video game location, like someone’s house, or an office, and it’s lovingly realized and laid out to be a believable place, I love it. I love when locations in video games feel real. HOWEVER if there’s no bathrooms, I’m sorry but it’s not going to work for me. It just isn’t.

Like, look at most Zelda games. Architecturally, the houses in Zelda games are all lovingly laid out. There might be a little kitchen, a table, a sleeping area. They tend to feel very “lived-in.” Except there’s barely any bathrooms! Completely takes me out of the immersion.

The reverse is also true: If I see a video game location that makes sure to include a bathroom, I’m like “now THIS could be a real place.” Love it. Makes the characters feel more human and less “puppets in a puppet show.”

Am I the only one? I can’t be, right?

Reminds me of how in a lot of movies and TV Shows, the characters are never using the bathroom, and even if they are, it might be for something else than relieving themselves.

And you think to yourself, "At some point in the story, these characters had to have been using the bathroom."

Remember the TV Show "24"? How often, let alone how many opportunities did Jack Bauer have to drop a deuce? He's out there saving the world, and suddenly nature's call come in, "God damn it. I'm torturing this guy right now! I can't leave to use the shitter." I'm surprised he didn't shit down someone's neck to get information out of them.

While the immersiveness of Hitman is... debatable (good focus on "real places", bad focus on making it's NPCs behave like anything other than AIs following their specific scripts - however its a stealth game so like, it's... fine?), they do score good in terms of adding rooms for bathrooms and toilets.

Hitman specifically also has a reason to make sure those are present - you can non-lethally poison NPCs/targets in the game, which causes them to start puking up in the nearest toilet (usually leaving them unguarded). That way, you can get the drop on them and drown them in the toilet or knock them out.

What do you think all those indoor pots are for?

For me, it's light sources. Ever since real time lighting became a thing, I'm noticing where light comes from. Even if the lighting is baked, I expect to see plausible sources of light in games.

For example, in Skyward Sword, the houses in skyloft has no light sources but the windows, the rooms are not plausibly lit. But with BotW and TotK, rooms are now filled with plausible sources

Nah, it's because bathrooms have mirrors, and no developer in their right mind wants to put a mirror in their game
There are modern solutions for that with ray tracing. Even persona 3 reload is using it

Super Mario Sunshine had bathrooms complete with toilets. In the hotel at least. I did find that pretty fascinating and appreciated the idea that these weird tree and snail people needed toilets too.

Had a delightful couple of encounters in the toilets of the Imperial Fortress in Baten Kaitos.

that one soldier enjoying what was presumably a porn magazine, who fights you for interrupting his me time, and then the soldier squatting over another toilet who loses his balance and knocks himself out when you open the door

I'm sorry, I was going to contribute with the conversation with my usual Crash Bandicoot hyperfixation with a piece from Crash Twinsanity, but unfortunately, my memory failed me and it isn't quite as I remember...

You see, in this particular scene in the game, I thought Dingodile was sitting on the toilet while reading (Shakespeare, his favorite); One of those old-timey wooden bathrooms seen outside of shacks..

But turns out, the shot clearly shows a whole little cozy hut where he was living temporarily in the same iceberg where Cortex built a lab. So no, my favorite franchise can't be that immersive.. I can only recall one scene in Mind Over Mutant where Cortex comes from the bathroom, but nothing was properly shown! 😥
