I think the big story this week is Ishin PS5 only underselling the PS4 version by about 4k units

The Octopath II Switch/PS5 split isn't surprising.

60k huh? Switch is slowly climbing back to where it was. That 80k to 55k back in January was a pretty sharp drop.

So many PS5s? All being scalped for sure according to trusted Twitter sales analysts. I can't imagine anyone in Japan wants one after the O X fiasco. Yakuza keeps underperforming.

The full price remaster outperformed the original release by over 50k and this is without digital sales.

01./00. [NSW] Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe <ACT> (Nintendo) {2023.02.24} (¥5.980) - 189.031 / NEW

02./00. [WII] Kirby's Return to Dream Land <ACT> (Nintendo) {2011.10.27} (¥5.800) - 136.811 / NEW

By the way the Metroid Prime remaster releases physically on March 3rd in Japan so it should show up in next weeks charts. Only in North America did it release last week.

Despite the much larger audience than in March 2018, still well below star allies though; which was at
[Gematsu First week:] [NSW] Kirby: Star Allies (Nintendo, 03/16/18) – 222,031 (New)
[Famitsu After ten days, i.e. the rest of the counted month of launch] 01./00. [NSW] Kirby Star Allies <ACT> (Nintendo) {2018.03.16} (¥5.980) – 317.961 / NEW

At their current pace, in 5 weeks Pokemon SV will cross 5 million and in 7 weeks Splatoon will cross 4 million, both in less than a year. I assume they will both get a spike when their expansions drops.

Also I think I am gonna need to mute famitsu sales on twitter. Fanboys using this thing for narratives and its just annoying.

Didn't expect it to come close to Star allies or Forgotten Land, for a remaster with a new game price tag it sold extremely well.

Huge drop from the first with Octopath Traveler 2.
I honestly think Square is going just a bit overboard with HD2D titles.

They are probably really cheap and easy to make nowadays though. Considering how much they are able to put out.

Oh, no, Famitsu has put the dark, underground Ryu ga Gotoku right next to the bright, family friendly Pokémon! They have ruined EVERYTHING!!

Those Switch Famitsu rankings always make me want to listen some Sister Rosetta Tharpe.

I prefer this version to the one from Sam Cooke. I said what I said.

Genuine question: is there a reason PS5 is suddenly selling so well? There doesn't seem to be any exclusives for it. I don't see the point yet, despite the awesome tech.
It’s available for the first time in years so people who haven’t been able to nab one are now doing so. It is still also being heavily scalped for overseas markets, but I think that will wane as stock in all countries improve.

As for “why is PS5 selling with few exclusives”, honestly I feel people just want to upgrade for upgrade sakes, and many are viewing multi platform titles as next Gen ones that need new hardware.

Also glad to see Kirby doing well. I picked it up and I’m having a good time with it.

The real shocker is it's even below the Live-A-Live remake, which was

[NSW] LIVE A LIVE (Square Enix, 07/22/22) – 71,137

Should have kept it exclusive and let Nintendo have more of a hand in advertising.
If you add the PS4 SKU it's probably above LAL, we'll know for certain soon enough. (well PC is a thing too, no matter how small, it is a growing market in the region)

OT declined because it was always going to, exclusive or not. The novelty has worn off. The only thing that can pull off the numbers of the first Octopath is the DQ III remake, due to the strength of the brand and the title in question alone.

Square Enix brilliantly decided to release 3 HD-2D titles back to back within a year, a declining sales curve was the most obvious outcome.

I do think word of mouth for Octopath 2 will be strong. Honestly, it’s the best JRPG I’ve played in years.

Hmmm SE should sell the HD 2D tech to Nintendo I think.
There's no tech to sell. It's just an artsyle realized through Unreal Engine.

And what games would you have Nintendo make with it by the way? There aren't exactly going for faux pixel art-retro vibes for any of their new releases.

If HD 2D is exclusive to Nintendo, we can get SMRPG and Mario + Luigi return with it.

I mean I wouldn't hate it! Especially if they were to do something different with it, like SacriFire.

It's just that Nintendo themselves aren't doing anything resembling this style. You don't need exclusivity for it or anything else, just interest in actually doing it.

I hope Octopath II is able to sell out its initial stock. at least it didn't tank like Theatrhythm. I blame S-E for not having a great marketing plan for these games though, good or bad a lot of their projects seem to tank lately and now that's starting to seep into Team Asano's success.

Kirby sales are amazing though, Japan is really loving the pink puff ball lately.

Kirby always sold a lot of merch, the switch really made it feel like the games finally match the pedestal the merch sales put kirby on
The games have been selling really well in Japan for quite some time now, both 3DS entries passed 500k at retail for exemple but it is true the switch has pushed the sales even further.
