I will never get over this graph. It ought to be in business textbooks some day.

This hit console's worst year was its first? And its second worst year its second??? inset this one in the "economic impact of COVID-19" chapter

Yeah it is quite rare of a console to peak in it's fourth full calendar year, it normally peaks in it's second or third. It is the same trend worldwide as well not just in Japan.

Pokemon SV is just crazy. Hardware sales are disappointing, Nintendo definitely needs to come with a Switch 2 soon or end up in a Wii situation.

Perhaps full calendar year is doing the work here, but PS4 peaked in its fourth year, and I think PS3 and X360 even later, although they were buoyed by Move/Kinect. But I think it became quite a bit less rare since the HD period.

Nintendo doesn't seem to care to push Switch or not rn. They seem happier selling less at full price than offering actual discounts or price drops. It's probably the first time in awhile they haven't really pushed to get the more casual players with insane deal. I don't even see the lite on sale and it didn't do that well...

Hard to see hardware sales as disappointing when it's doing significantly better than anything else this old ever has.

It's hardly a Wii situation when the console could still double what the Wii did in its 5+ year.

Yea, less than 20% down year over year for this week is not “it’s a rounding error” but it’s also not “watch out for that cliff!” territory either. Those are still good numbers for a system that’s almost 6 years old

PS4 actually peaked in it's 3rd full year. For Nintendo it is very rare though, The DS is the only other Nintendo platform to peak worldwide in it's 4th full year.

Switch still outperforming 2019 hardly counts as disappointing, from where I'm standing.

Some very, very strong software performances, too.

Switch sales being the third highest year ever is "disappointing" because people need to latch up onto some narrative as to why Nintendo should release new hardware right now. Anyone who is saying that the Switch could end up like a "Wii situation" probably has no clue what that actually means and they are just parroting what other people have posted online. The Wii and Switch situations are completely different and the reasons for the Wii U not doing well go well beyond not releasing it a year earlier.

More than double, the Wii shipped 3.99 million in it's 6th full fiscal year and Nintendo forecasts 19 million this FY for Switch.
I prefer to compare with more similar time periods, but the result is still more than double. That 19 million is forecast for Switch quarters 21-24. For Wii, those quarters were 7.82m.

For Japan specifically it's even more pronounced. Looking at the Famitsu numbers for the Wii period that approximately matches Switch's age in 2022, it fails to hit 1 million.

Pokémon's success is deserved despite everything. I hope GF never goes back to being afraid to trust their players to be able to play their game.

Switch will easily reach another 20 million units sold per year (it's 4 straight years). Currently at 10.79 millions after 3 quarters & in this 4th quarter (holiday quarter) can get around 10 million units sold. So, now at 114.33 million + 10 million in 4th Q = 124 million units total as per end of 2022

I don't think it will hit 10 million, it is tracking down a little bit in Europe and Japan year over year and in The US NPD it sold close to last year in November but October was way down. Last years Oct to Dec quarter was 10.67 million so I'm thinking 9 to 9.5 million. If it hits over 9.5 million it would be a pleasant surprise.

So it's achievable because just need minimum 9.21 million units to make 20 million units sold this year

if I had to give awards for the year, I'd give publisher of the year to Pokemon Company for being able to release two major pokemon titles. and biggest disappointment to Microsoft, because I though MS could have done much better

17. [NSW] Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion – 12,606 / 61,133

20. [PS4] Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion – 8,865 / 62,346

24. [PS5] Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion – 6,878 / 61,400

Switch version of Crisis Core is where the legs are confirmed, unless they have stock shortages of the PS4 version. Certainly looks like the PS4/PS5 sales are front-loaded.

PS games generally seem to lack legs in Japan compared to Switch games.
They only stay in the charts for a week or two while many of Switch's charting titles are years old.

Yeah folks have a tendency to say "Nintendo NEEDS to release new hardware" when what they actually mean is "I WANT new hardware."
The Switch and Nintendo are doing just fine, superb even.

It's fine to want the next system, but some people are too eager to try to downplay sales because they want the Switch replaced ASAP.

Every Switch thread turning into begging for a hardware revision is so transparent, while Nintendo is like:

Mario Party Superstars still turning in decent numbers, should be the second best selling Mario Party very soon.

Regional Software Shipments

Switch must be close to selling the most software of any platform ever in Japan with 175.08 million as of 30th September 2022.
From the fiscal year data it is easy to work out Calendar year software sales and compare to Famitsu which of course lacks digital sales.

Switch software shipments per year (Japan)

2017: 9.81 million
2018: 20.52 million
2019: 27.01 million
2020: 41.53 million
2021: 44.32 million
2022: 31.89 million from 1st Jan to September 30th.

2022 needs 12.44 million software shipments from 1st October to 31st December to be Switch's peak year and with Pokemon Scarlet & Violet contributing around half of that by itself it should easily happen.

I don't know what PS1 and PS2 did, but here are Nintendo's claimed Japanese software shipments. SNES, DS, NES still to catch up with, but at going rates it might be on top at the end of calendar 2023.
Oo5SEIA.png

EDIT: Put Switch against those three through ten years and the lack of early NES/SNES data makes it more funny than useful, but it's definitely easy to see how Switch software has gained ground on DS.
