TotK is still CLIMBING UP. What a beast.

We're seeing some of the effects of the PS4 decline with Atelier opening higher on Switch than on PS.

Yeah, obviously FF17 will be an open world Ubisoft-like after this failure to grow (With FF16 not only not growing but seemingly shrinking the series)

If open-world FF17 again doesn't grow the series, I think the series is done as a AAA offline franchise. You need to consistently hit 10-15m if you're spending AAA resources on an offline game.

Good numbers for Atelier Marie. Also the gap between the switch ver. and the PS5 is huge this time and the ps4 ver didn't even make it to the top 10 (still I expect about 2k sales there).

Just for fun comparing it to the Plus version (which is the version is based on), the plus version managed 27,175 sales on the first week, but then again the market of 1998 was very different and there was no digital ver, which taking in account I believe they did manage to sell about the same

FF16 is such a baffling gaming on a conceptual level. They decided to both follow trends by associating the game with game of thrones style (which blew in their faces since after the last season game of thrones everybody hates it) and not follow the open world trend by making a character action linear game which is a genre with less appeal than jrpgs. And also they decided go full exclusive and not release on pc at launch where they add the biggest chance to grow the franchise. It all feels so backward.

"Game of Thrones" like is still very popular as shown by the new HBO show and how popular Attack on Titan was until the very very end.

And I guess they thought that FF16 would be comparable to God of War Ragnarok in structure and combat without ripping it off directly, but they may have wanted to rip it off more directly.

Dragon Quest 9-ing Final Fantasy 17 will be the last bastion.

preferably, they find a way to make it for Drake as well, but that's probably off the table as long as they still have those super high budget aspirations

Also, it was pretty weird FF16 was conceived as a linear action game when... They already have a linear action game high budget Final Fantasy sub-series in the FF7R series.

Obviously FF7R has a very different combat system, but it still has some similarities.

Ripping off Elden Ring/TotK etc with way more cutscenes is the obvious next step, but I think Square doesn't think they're good at open world design (which is suggested by how bad Forspoken and FF15's world design is)

FF17 probably won't release until 2029 at the earliest so it will probably be PS6 so it seems weird to be talking about the Switch 2 in that situation.

What does it mean to DQ9 FF17.

if FF17 is gonna take that long, I wonder how they intend on maintaining the franchise. I guess it would be as good time as ever to do original Final Fantasies with lower budgets and focus on expanding the IP into other genres and segments again

Dragon Quest 9 had create-a-character and cooperative multiplayer. ended up being the best selling DQ game

even had action combat before outcry in japan got them to change it

when described like this, it sounds a lot like Final Fantasy 15 Comrades

Maintaining the brand before FF16 sounds super easy?

Major releases

FF7R2 1H 2024
FF14 expansion 2H 2024

FF14 expansion 2H 2026

FF7R3 1H 2028
FF14 expansion 2H 2028

Moderate releases:

FF7 Ever Crisis 2H 2023 to 2H 2024
FF9 Remake (assuming this is a Trials of Mana like effort and probably from those devs as well) 1H 2024 to 1H 2025

Small releases:

Final Fantasy Tactics Remastered 2H 2023 to 2H 2024

Fill the empty slots from 2025 to 2027 with remakes (I would guess FF9 devs do FF6 next), GaaS experiments, and other spinoffs.

I can't wait to see how Pikmin 4 is gonna glow.

Also I think FFXVI is doing fine. It's at almost 400k physical alone in Japan, with digital it surely already passed 500k, and the bulk of the sales are the US/EU numbers. It's gonna sell less than XV(well that's one of the best selling SE games of all time and I'd think it took more money to make than XVI) and it's not gonna take the franchise to a broader appeal, but it definitely is gonna pay itself and make a lot of profit.

this pretty much highlights the problem, IMO. expansions and remakes, but not new experiences. they're not going to do much to draw new people in, which is what SE needs to be doing for Japan right now. Final Fantasy Origins was a good start (quality notwithstanding), but they gotta do more. they could really use stuff like World of Final Fantasy and Dissidia (the psp ones)

I'm sure you'll see a new spinoff catastrophe like FF7 The First Soldier every year or two like how Capcom keeps releasing GaaS failures like RE multiplayer and Exoprimal.

(Also, FF7R is a sequel to Advent Children and is a fake remake though obviously this is pretty difficult to promote and it's not like this lowers the barrier of entry at all and it isn't going to expand the audience of Final Fantasy at all)

First Soldier was interesting at least. shame SE botched it. even Dragon Question has a battle royale and that's doing decently right now.

outside of the remakes, not-remakes, and whatnot, they have a quality problem. you look at Trials of Mana and Crisis Core Reunion, you know SE can put together a great mid-budget package that also looks great. but these are remakes and are hinging on the designs of their original versions. you look at their other, original stuff and it's pretty clear that they are struggling for quality. Asano does well, but they can't rope a new Star Ocean together to save their lives. Final Fantasy Origin was...something, Dissidia PS4 was nothing like the million seller previously (hey that sounds familiar).

just...get it together SE

Also, kudos to Koei Tecmo for cultivating and nurturing a fanbase for Atelier games on Switch. The first Atelier title on Switch bombed horribly; a lot of third party publishers would have been like "Welp, we tried; there is no market for this IP on this console. Bye!" Instead, they persevered and they have been reaping the rewards ever since.

Can you even make a mid budget, semi-original title that does well without somehow being an 87+ Metacritic hit.

Forspoken was very high budget, but didn't hit Ubisoft caliber (which is basically the level you need to hit to have a chance financially) and it was a huge failure that caused the studio to be demoted to support work.

I don't think Stranger of Paradise did well at all either.

While the sales were low for Lydie & Suelle in SW it was pretty much the same for vita (the difference was about 1k) and even the ps4 version sold lower than Firis (in the firts weeks at least). So it was more a combinatio of "Vita does not mean life anymore" and that people again was getting tired of the franchise (which resulted on creating another Arland game and updating the combat with Ryza) so it made sense they went full on switch development. I would even say the split in 3 consoles is what hurt that release and even KT knew it.

Nintendo is proving it to be possible. I'd argue they're better in tune with wider demos than most third parties and their AA games.

hell, SE themselves had some
and that's not counting the other Asano million sellers or the games that might have had high returns despite not hitting 1M

Trials of Mana is a remake as we were just talking about?

Octopath 1 did well, but that was released a while ago and it feels like there's been even more consolidation to big games since then with Octopath 2 doing much worse despite being viewed as much better.

Eh probably not because the franchise is one of the more significant in terms of merchandising and other income streams. Whether the single player franchise grows or not, which I think the jury is out on until 16 gets through it's holiday season and eventual PC port, it's probably still of significance to continuing making games in the franchise with a marketable cast of characters.

yes, but that was also a game that only released in one region before. same with Live a Live. if you want discount it, by all means, there're other examples to the point.

ultimately, games like Octopath and the like prove mid-budget semi-original titles do well without needing an amazing metacritic. it's not just SE here, but it's with studios like Konami and their Momotaro Dentetsu series, which hit 4M with their latest game. Sonic Frontier, which did well despite it's low budget. and more

People don't hate the 'Game of Thrones' style. The last season has its detractors because its quality was below the level of the rest of the series, but its style of fantasy/intrigue as a whole is widely loved and I'm sure consumers still want content in that vein. Even today, Thrones remains one of the most widely searched and watched shows years later.

The exclusivity is a bit perplexing. Sony's cheque must have been preposterous, but I think debates will linger on whether they are squandering the franchise's recognition in the long term for short term monetary benefits.

Ring Fit Adventure is almost at 3.5 million sales in Japan only ... yet there was never some DLC with new exercises/moves and/or a sequel.

Nintendo ... what the fuck 'r you doing?

Dropped by Bic Camera during my Japan trip this week, collected this intel haha.
The Switch section was teeming with people and there were tons of ads for Pikmin 4 all over Tokyo.
