I would have expected seeing higher sales for SMT5 in Japan.

The PS5 sales is surprisingly low, but we can assume it has sold 500K-600K copies worldwide from the recent posting, which is pretty good.
But for a rerelease it seems good, also it's only been in store in 3 days.

If OG Switch is outselling the PS5 version at 2:1 then Switch 2 vs PS5 versions of multiplatform RPG franchises are going to be an utter bloodbath in Japan.

The PS5 sales is surprisingly low
It’s only low because the overall sales are low. Switch versions generally outsell PS5 in Japan by varying margins.

True, but i was expecting maybe 80K in Japan, but the Switch version outselling the PS5 version is crazy to see.

This really brings the question how the PS5 and Switch 2 sales will differ, since most games will be playable on the Switch 2, Having FF9 Remake or any mainline FF not arriving on Switch 2, would be weird, especially MH.

Not surprised that Switch has the best sales of Shin Megami Tensei V Vengeance. It apparently did really well worldwide. Last know number for SMT V we had was 1m for Switch some time in 2022?

But ouch, Monster Hunter Stories apparently soft floped.

Yea, this why a number of us are expecting many of these projects that are skipping Switch of late, Visions of Mana, Persona 3 Reload, Metaphor, will receive Switch 2 ports fairly early on.

And this is why I follow JP sales threads. As someone who largely plays games from Japan on consoles, it’s a good way to get a sense of which way the winds are blowing in terms of where development resources are going.

In this case, I was really hoping for the PS5 version to sell higher physically than Switch, mainly because this probably wouldn't entice Switch owners who own the original. However, this is similar to the case of Persona 5 finally going multiplat, so I'm not really surprised.

PC and Switch doing a lot of heavy lifting for JRPGs. SE managing to avoid both platforms for a lot of their releases is really funny in hindsight.

I read somewhere (IB?) that the half million number for Vengeance is shipped, not sold.

As I posted in the Vengeance thread the worldwide sales numbers probably go Switch>PS>PC>etcetc>Xbox. I'm actually really curious about the sellthrough numbers at this point, because I had a big cadre of people I know IRL get the original release of V, but they all seem to have passed on Vengeance... including me. 😅

Because PlayStation got way westernized for the japanese tastes for quite a while, Sony don't feel like a japanese company anymore, this might explain why Japan don't care about it now.

Switch version outsells PS5 version is "normal" but I am more surprised that PS5 version outsells PS4 version now by 3:1. It took 5 years to do that, but still it is about the time.
top 30

20-40% stocks for all version. A pretty good estimation I guess.

Really just the big budget stuff (which usually has Sony money behind them). PC is also notoriously not as big a platform in Japan so their screwball strategy with the platform is somewhat understandable.

But Switch? As long as you don’t care about the big budget releases, they’ve been keeping it well stocked between remasters and lower budget projects. Like I think there’s less than 10 titles that are still stuck in PS4/PS5 land at this point and I’m fairly confident they’re going to be porting most of those for Switch 2 as easy projects to get to market and familiarize themselves with the hardware.
