Reviews Digital Foundry || Elden Ring Beta: PS5/ Xbox Series X/S First Look - Quality vs Performance Modes Tested!

ILikeFeet

Warpstar Knight

Our first hands-on with developer From Software's next major project, as offered in a generous network test. Limgrave is open for exploration on every console platform, a daring open-world twist on the Dark Souls formula. PS5 and Xbox Series consoles offer two modes to enjoy it - quality mode and frame-rate mode - each with distinct advantages. But can either truly hit a locked 60fps? And what of playing the PS4 Pro version on PS5? Tom investigates.

fun fact! this is teh first time I'm seeing footage of Elden Ring! :D summary soon
  • updated Sekiro engine
  • ray tracing will be at launch
  • practically Dark Souls 4
  • PS5>Series X, but this is a beta
  • framerate and quality mode
  • framerate mode is dynamic 1512p - 2160p
  • quality mode is 2160p, boosted shadow quality
  • Series S framerate mode is 1008p-1440p
  • Series S quality mode is 1440p
  • Series X/s motion blur is disabled on framerate mode, on both modes in PS5
  • visual qualities otherwise are exactly the same
  • One X has lower settings than Series S (which is the same as the higher end)
  • no system holds solid 60fps
  • PS5 framerate is 45-60
  • PS5 quality is uncapped, 30-40
  • Series X average is lower but same range in either mode
  • Series S is worse, 40-60
  • Quality mode is just over 30
  • PS4 backwards compatible on PS5 is a locked 60fps, lower visual settings and lower resolution
  • PS5 loading < Series duo by half
  • last gen video coming soon

Seems ps5 is overall better in this test build. Series X being more stable during fast movement/traversal tells me that it could have to do with optimization perhaps.

Seriously, what’s the point of doing a framerate test on a beta? It only server to create a false narrative.
They always communicate with the developers what they find, doing so earlier will probably help in bringing the Xbox version on par with the ps5

That’s a side effect. These videos are made for clicks and views, it’s not an idealistic attempt to help devs.

And from already knows the game isn’t fully optimized. That’s why it’s a beta.

not exactly a side effect, they do have direct contact with some developers and things have been explicitly addressed. From Software isn't one of them though.

but I'm on the side of, if they think it's presentable, then it's critiqueable

Frames drop from 60 to above 50 is hardly noticeable to the normal person. Into the 40s will definitely be noticeable. I hope they fix it up for launch.

It's interesting to see how the game runs in it's current state even if it's non-final code.

I wonder how much they'll be able to improve performance. Neither of the PS5 modes is good enough in this Beta in my eyes.

Elden Ring Beta: PS4 vs PS4 Pro vs Xbox One/X Tested - What's The State of Last-Gen?

As a cross-gen title Elden Ring's tech must scale to seven platforms - an unprecedented number that includes base Xbox One as its minimum spec. How does such a vast game world translate visually though? Equally, can the PS4 Pro and One X deliver a locked frame-rate, or is it swinging between 30 and 60fps? Tom returns for a second round of Elden Ring testing to find out.
  • no mode toggle
  • base ps4 is 1080p/30fps
  • uneven frame pacing
  • same settings between PS4/Pro/One X, lower than current gen
  • XBO 900p/30fps, uneven frame pacing
  • downgrade over PS4
    • low foliage
    • low texture filtering
    • low shadow quality
    • low AO
    • enemy animation update at 15fps in one instant
  • PS4 Pro is 1800p, reconstruction is used, half horizontal res
  • One X is 1512p to 1800p
    • dynamic
  • One X on average higher
  • One X resolution higher than Series S, lower quality settings than Series S
  • PS4 hits 30fps, stutter city tho
  • Bloodborne Part 2
  • same story for One, lower lows
  • Pro and One X are unlocked, 30-40; sub 30fps possible
  • Pro is over One X, probably due to the lower internal resolution
  • 19 seconds load from start menu on PS4 duo
  • fast travel, 22s
  • 22s/32s from start on One/X
  • 23s/40s fast travel
