State of the market
June 2023 U.S. consumer spending on video game content, hardware and accessories reached $4.7B, a 9% increase vs YA. It was the 2nd highest spending ever achieved in a June month, trailing only June 2021’s $4.8B.

Year-to-date consumer spending was flat when compared to the same period in 2022, at $21.8 billion.

F2hyoKCawAAKP8p

Hardware
Video game hardware spending increased 22% vs YA, to $454M. This is the highest video game hardware spend for a June month since the $617M reached in June 2008. Double-digit percentage growth in PlayStation 5 spending offset declines in spending on Xbox Series and Switch.

PlayStation 5 was the best-selling hardware platform in both unit and dollar sales during June 2023. Consumer spending on PlayStation hardware reached its highest June total since 2008, while unit sales were the highest achieved since June 2010.

PlayStation 5 continues to lead the 2023 hardware market across both units and dollars.

Software
Diablo IV was the best-selling game of June, instantly becoming the #3 best-selling game of 2023 YTD. Four other new releases appeared among the top 20 best-sellers, including Final Fantasy XVI (#2), Street Fighter 6 (#3), F1 23 (#15) and Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life (#17).

Launch month sales of Street Fighter 6 more than doubled those of Street Fighter V (February 2016). Street Fighter 6 enjoyed the highest launch month dollar sales for a Head-to-Head Fighting game since the April 2019 launch of Mortal Kombat 11.

Mobile
Sensor Tower reports the top 10 games by U.S. consumer spending in June as: Candy Crush Saga, Roblox, Royal Match, Coin Master, Monopoly GO!, Gardenscapes, Township, Pokémon Go, Jackpot Party - Casino Slots, and Homescapes.

“Spend trends in June 2023 were relatively flat compared to June 2022. Between Gardenscapes, Township, and Homescapes, publisher Playrix now has three titles in the top ten (by consumer spend) in June,” said Abraham Yousef of Sensor Tower.

“Also moving into the top ten, Scopely’s Monopoly GO has been on a tear since its April 2023 release with June 2023 consumer spend up 56% MoM (month-over-month)” - Abraham Yousef, Sensor Tower.

Accessories
Accessories spending during June increased 14% when compared to a year ago, totaling $214 million. June’s top 4 best-selling accessories in dollar sales were PlayStation 5 DualSense gamepads, led by the DualSense Edge.

The PlayStation 5 DualSense Edge remains the best-selling accessory of 2023 in dollar sales..

PS5 had the second highest units sold for Playsation hardware since June 2010 which was 426K and it must have been higher than 398k in June 2011 so PS5 units were between 398k and 426k, this was a big increase over May which was estimated between 250 to 275k. I will add this additional info to the OP.

Source: Welfare

Edit: Welfare originally didn't include PS2 units, When you add PS2 to PS3 + PSP hardware numbers in June 2010 and 2011 then this gives the PS5 a range of between 406k and 487k for June 2023.

I know this is primarily a Nintendo focused forum but, why haven't the Xbox sales improved as the years went by? I mean, I don't have the numbers, but it appears that it is selling even worse than the last couple of years. Meanwhile, the PS5 is flying off the shelves and even the old Switch is still outselling the Xbox.

They've not released games tgat had any impact on the console in the past 2 years. Most of the sales are pushed by gamepass and third parties games but without some killer apps they won't take any market share from sony.

Switch is the anomaly here making Xbox look bad. Switch should’ve been riding third since at least 2 years ago but it just refuses to hit that retirement home.

Regardless of the Switch's continued success, Xbox sales are decreasing YOY which shouldn't be happening at this point in the console's life.

Maybe there’s only so much money to around. Removing switch from the equation would maybe make people consider buying the Xbox more? I dunno

  • Missed the boat on hardware supply
  • Missed releasing major first party games to sustain interest in the platform
  • Missed major deals with third party games (for either exclusivity or co branding) to sustain interest in the platform
  • Barely marketed the hardware, software, or brand
  • Generally focused more on growing subscriptions over hardware growth (but ran into the same four problems already mentioned even there)

I think Phil Spencer hit the nail on the head when he said they lost the worst generation to lose with the PS4/XB1 generation. Xbox is just in a hole that they can't climb out of quickly now that folks have established digital libraries.

I don’t think that’s the answer for why sales are declining YoY in the third year of the platform though, that doesn’t indicate stagnating interest (which Spencer’s statement would imply), it indicates declining interest. That requires further active fuck ups from Xbox’s side to happen.

PS5 is doing crazy numbers. The Spider-Man 2 + a Slim model combo is going to do even bigger numbers later this year.

That's fair, they have plenty of other things working against them right now as well.

Sony has been pretty aggressive with price cuts and discounts. I think they put the God of War Bundle on sale in June in the US and some European markets have already seen sales on the PS5. But the funny thing is that Nintendo still hasn't had a price drop for the Switch. Hell, I think the Zelda OLED is $10 more than the standard one. So it's impressive that sales have kept up and a price drop is still always something they have in their back pocket to boost sales even more.

Congrats to both Playstation & Switch. Xbox is disappointed as always. Year to date (YTD) TOTK at No.2 behind Hogwart is fantastic ! But I'm curious why Elden Ring YTD at No.14 ? I thought it sales since early 2023 will be massive compared to just launch Diablo 4, Final Fantasy 16 & Street Fighter 6 ? So meaning Elden Ring sales is bad ? Both Hogwart & TOTK miles ahead of Elden Ring in YTD sales

Elden Ring released in Feb 2022, sales were massive in the same time frame last year.

Welfare from InstallBase hardware estimations for June 2023

PS5: 420K
NSW: 350K
XBS: 230K

Compared to June 2022

NSW: 400K estimate
PS5: 277K leaked number
XBS: 260K leaked number

This lines up with Switch and XBS being a bit down and PS5 being massively up.

PS5 is rock n rolling this year. With Spider-Manc 2 out, Sony are going to have a glorious year sales-wise.

A lot has been said in reply to you already, but also, MS should've focussed way WAY more in certain exclusivity deals with publishers and developers for original content. And maybe not the big boys, but like Platinum (if they are willing to work with MS after Scalebound that is, however, even Platinum has a price hehe)) and maybe SEGA. Now they seem to be betting on Starfield, but that's just one game.

Also, their marketing has been absolute HORRIBLE. I haven't seen any commercial whatsoever of the system in like years?

I guess Xbox is still smarting from the losses from the Xbox One gen and the changes they've made just haven't been able to turn things around fast enough.

Its likely the effects of the Activision deal won't even have an impact until the next gen unless this gen goes a whole decade onwards or something.

And heck, how can they benefit when all these compromises they had to make to get past govt. regulation will inevitably slow down the exclusive profits from this deal?

Hot take or not I'm gonna say it... This is the last generation with an Xbox console. I think it's previous obvious by now that people simply don't want Xbox consoles. I bet that Microsoft would follow Sega's steps and become just a publisher.

I don't think its that people don't want Xbox, but it seems more that the industry just can't handle 3 consoles.

I don't think we've had a single gen where one of the big 3 is smarting in someway while the other two aren't at least in more beneficial conditions.

It's times like this where its important to stand out with what your console offers. And Microsoft just haven't provided that. Gamepass is too little too late to make up for the Xbox One fallout.

They're still licking their wounds, but it would take either an astronomic investment from them or an astronomic fuck up from Nintendo or Sony for them to break back in.

Has there been a high profile Xbox exclusive since Halo Infinite? I can't think of one. There have been some seriously high quality first party games on GamePass since then - Pentiment and Hi Fi Rush immediately come to mind - but it feels like Microsoft simply haven't any sales driving titles for a prolonged period of time. I'm sure Forza is excellent as ever, but it's also obvious Forza alone as a reliable fixture isn't enough.

The contrast with Switch and PS5 since the start of 2022 couldn't be clearer. The former has had a really strong and consistent slate of exclusives, including five titles that have surpassed 10 million sales (Pokemon Legends, Switch Sports, Splatoon 3, Pokemon Scarlet/Violet, Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom). PS5 is hitting its stride with ample supply and stuff like Horizon, God of War, Final Fantasy XVI and Spiderman 2 are there as the major exclusive sales drivers. With PS4's success giving Sony an advantage in moving users over to PS5, it also means Sony get more mileage (versus Xbox) out of multi-platform titles.

I don't think the situation is irredeemable for Microsoft, but they need Starfield to knock it out the park and they need to have more major titles to follow that up with in 2024. The US should be a strong market for Xbox, so seeing the console stall there should be concerning for Microsoft. Starfield looks set to arrive when they really need it.

Xbox doesn't have killer apps that sell hardware, the other two platforms do.

Tale as old as time in this industry.

Time will tell about whether their acquisitions will eventually pay off, starting with Starfield in a couple months.

Nope (and they even retroactively ruined Halo Infinite).

The important thing is to establish a steady cadence of games with Starfield, it can't just be a one and done, or we will get a repeat of what happened in 2021, where Xbox got some strong games in the last quarter of the year, but then had no follow up games to capitalize on the new momentum.

Starfield looks to be a great game and a big seller. But will it just be a Smash Melee situation? A system seller, but the big fish in a small pond?

Imagine if Nintendo's new system is a big seller following the release of Starfield, how does that impact the momentum of the Xbox? Can it withstand hit after hit from the two sides of Sony and Nintendo?

If your hypothetical situation would be reality, then I feel it's safe to say MS would be pretty fucked.

However, the want to cultivate Starfield as a franchise, so they probably have some sort of plan in place to roll out more within that universe on Xbox. I feel this is important to do pretty soonish for MS, since Spider-man will drop in september too so if Starfield would be a succes, it would still be overrun bij Spider-Man, is my guess.

So in order to keep the wave of Starfield succes going they need to pump out regular content within that universe. Not sure how they are going to do that.

They do have Hellblade II for next year, wonder what that is going to do.

This just further entrenches my opinion that backwards compatibility is a must for the next Nintendo console. Phil Spencer was right in saying that Xbox lost the worst generation to lose, Xbox One vs PS4. People are invested heavily in their digital libraries and are unlikely to jump ship.

Nintendo needs to make the transition as smooth as signing into your Nintendo account and putting in your microSD card. Keep people in the ecosystem and investing more and more money.

I'd say it's more that the success of the 360 was the exception to the rule and can largely be attributed to capitalizing on Sony falling face first with the PS3. The original Xbox mostly coasted on Halo and online multiplayer, and even then it only sold marginally more than the GameCube.

PlayStation (and now PC/Steam) is simply too dominant outside of the anglosphere for Xbox to increase its hardware market share. There are countries where the majority of the gaming population has never even heard of Xbox.

the main problem is that Microsoft is not releasing contant first party games for Xbox Series X/S, last year they barely released games for the console, PS5 e Switch is a success, because Sony/Nintendo is releasing constant good first party games for this consoles, we dont see this on Xbox side.
