The June 18 Nintendo Direct broadcast unveiled Too Kyoo Game’s brand-new RPG The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy. The long-awaited collaboration between Danganronpa series writer Kazutaka Kodaka and Zero Escape creator Kotaro Uchikoshi is set to be published in early 2025 by Aniplex. The despair-filled game’s announcement has been met with an overwhelming response from fans of both creators, but it seems the project had a rather rocky start, as revealed by Kodaka.
In a recent interview with Famitsu, Kodaka, who is the director and scenario writer for The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy, reveals that development of the title started 6-7 years ago, right after Too Kyoo Games was established. The game was initially supposed to be published by another major publisher, but the project went through “numerous difficulties” and ultimately fell through.

I mentioned in the thread that I was mixed on the title, and from online chatter seems like I am not the only one. My guess is that the game (along with all their other projects) was gonna be published by Spike Chunsoft, but they probably saw RainCode as a safer bet that THL (name is too long).

I want to learn more about it and hopefully they turn out an unforgettable experience.
 
I don't get why they thought it was a smart thing to do just right after their first big(ger) game was successful (i assume?).

Could've gone for another project or two to gain some stability before doing such risky moves.
 
Pivoting to tower defence is definitely a risk. I'm a great fan of the Nonary/Zero Escape Games and Danganronpa but I have no interest in the new one because I don't like tower defence games. I'm surprised that they feel like there's a big crossover between people who like murder mystery visual novels and tower defence games.
 
In some ways, I do get wanting to go all out to realize a vision you have, but that's definitely concerning... I hope it pays off for them, I've liked Tookyo's output so far for the most part.

Y'all better buy this!

I'm there no matter what these guys make. Both Kodaka and Uchikoshi said they're very involved with this game. You just know this is a game they're very serious about, I have high hopes for it. I really hope it'll do well, they have a great team behind it.

For those concerned about the genre: it's too early to say how it'll play exactly. It could be potentially a top tier strategy game. But it could also be a strategy-light game, kinda like 13 Sentinels. We don't know. But we know we have some of the best people behind the scenario and writing for this.

I hope Nintendo does their part and help Too Kyo to promote their game. They picked Switch console exclusivity, Nintendo needs to reward this choice with a full blown marketing campaign. One that similar to what Fae Farm got.
 
I hope they'll get the gameplay right. Danganronpa wasn't exactly known for its high quality non-VN segments, most of the minigames were kinda bad, with the breaking points being 2's hangman's gambit and the casino minigames of V3. Worlds End Clubs platforming was similarly really cheap and lackluster.

Going head first into Tower Defence as the primary loop (although the trailer seems to also imply a use of the VN format for its class trial equivalent?) is certainly a bold move. If I were them, I'd have stuck with the VN format, both Uchikoshi and Kodaka are much better/reliable as VN writers.

Well... I hope it isn't a lot of debt because even as a huge Danganronpa fan, I don't really think this is going to sell super well.
 
Kodaka and Uchikoshi collaborating on the story and world makes this an easy day one for me. I’m there for whatever they come up with.

Hopefully it'll launch alongside with the Switch 2 and maybe even be a launch title for the system, similar to Super Bomberman R

I'm SO happy I'm not the only one having this issue!! You definitely phrased it more gently that I would have though... a lot... LOOOOOT more gently, I'll stick to that xD

Maybe this is a joke going over my head, but I'm not sure how much Fae Farm should be propped up as an aspirational example

Jus based on the layoffs and game cancelation that Phoenix Labs announced last month, they don't seem to be in a particularly good spot themselves

Nintendo pushed the game super hard, to the point most of the YouTube ads I got was Fae Fram directly from Nintendo.

It started out pretty well, rose as high as number 2 on eShop. But failed to have long legs as way too many similar games were out there. Tbh, I wouldn't connect the hardships the studio having to Fae Farm's sales performance, the studio also has gaas Dauntless that they still support. It might have its population dropped sharply.

In all seriousness, I agree these designs didn't look great. But as someone with negative interest in Danganronpa, I've actually always sort of admired the character designs.

Characters have distinct faces and bodies, and they have design elements that actually relate to who they are, like the inventor girl's goggles and wispy smoke-like hair. I don't love the art style itself, and I've never heard anything remotely appealing about how the characters are written, but that they don't fall into the same wannabe fashion designer trap that plagues damn near every other "anime" game makes them stand out really positively to me.

In fairness, I can think of a few examples of focusing on outfits actually being done really well, like NEO TWEWY or Persona 5. But the standard is a generic character wearing either something bland or laughably ridiculous, which is cluttered with meaningless details like boot flaps and extra belts and zippers that don't do anything either way. The designers seem to all have the same way of doing things that focuses almost exclusively on clothes and maybe hair, which just wasn't and isn't the way character design has historically worked anywhere else? It's a really bizarre and all-consuming 21st century trend that I've never seen anyone else comment on. I always assumed it came from Final Fantasy due to Amano and Nomura's famous tendencies and its prominence in JRPGs especially, but I have no earthly idea really.

I tried Rain Code last year, and again this year, and I just don't enjoy it that much. I don't know what it is, but it leads me to believe that the danganronpa saga wouldn't be for me. That should steer me away from this game, but...

For one thing, this doesn't seem to have any of the investigation/trial elements. And, more importantly, I'm a huge fan of Uchikoshi's games. I'll probably get this on day one because of that. Hopefully this game does well enough and the team's financial situation improves.

I really enjoyed Danganronpa and Zero Escape, but the constant objectification of the female characters in Rain Code prevented me from enjoying it, and have left me unsure whether I want to commit to another game from them. I'll probably wait for reviews and take it from there.
