Retro an (official) build of Mega Man Soccer containing a proper ending has been found, over 30 years later.

yes, the original game rather notoriously would cut back to the title screen when completing the single-player modes. but evidence was always there suggesting this wasn’t meant to be the case.
the credits were found in the game’s data back in 2010 (possibly earlier, the link is to CAPCOM’s official blog discussing the TCRF article which was made that year.) but aren’t tied to the single-player modes, instead being accessed through a convoluted set of steps that are impossible to do as they require Dr. Wily to be unlocked as a playable character (which itself is tied to the aforementioned lack of ending.)
partial data for the actual ending was eventually found, and there exists a 2018 rom hack that properly restores it.

but this “SAMPLE VERSION” shows the decision was made at the very last minute, as completing the final fight against Wily plays the standard cutscene of the opponent getting “recruited” for your team.

displays a special password that skips straight to the cutscene.

then plays the rest of the ending like normal, only skipping the scene where Wily’s base explodes.

curiously the convoluted credits “Easter egg” isn’t implemented in the build, even though an earlier version of the text is stored in the data.
and as the tweet notes, the build has full multitap support. allowing up to 4 players in a single match.

This is great. This game was very hard for me as a dumb kid, and I would give up the very existence of Strikers for this to show up on NSO.

The game has no ending or credits? That feels like a mistake than an intentional culling, but then again if it was surely there'd have been a reprint. Unless the game bombed or something and Capcom didn't feel it was worth it.
