Nintendo might really luck out in the end with the chip shortage and the timings of their consoles releasing. Sony will have to fall back on selling games on PC because of the effect the shortage will have on console sales.
that's not why they're pivoting to PC, nor is it gonna help them. they are just using it for more exposure and a little bit of extra revenue. Sony will be fine as long as they keep selling what they put out

Switch is already the 5th highest selling system of all time in Japan and is coming up fast on #4 (PS2) and #3. (3DS) It's basically guaranteed to be at least the third highest selling ever there in lifetime sales.

By contrast, while PS1 and PS2 both sold over 20 million in Japan, PS3 dropped to just over 10 million, and PS4 is going to fall short of that again, having stalled out at a little over 9 million. The big question now is whether PS5 will continue this decline. It was tracking ahead of PS4, but at this rate it should soon fall behind it.
PS4 had a comparatively slow start (specifically trended lower than PS3's first year and a half) and had no viable competition in the console space for about 4 years and then bottomed out very shortly after Switch arrived on the scene.
And based on this chart from earlier (all glory to hiska-kun over at Install Base for the graph), the streams are about to cross again and PS5 will again trend lower than PS4.

When combined with the suggestion that a not-insignificant number of PS5s sold in Japan are due to scalping and reselling to non-Japanese buyers, it doesn't look good.

Also feel like it's worth mentioning that, even though handhelds are usually treated as separate entities from home consoles and rightfully so perhaps, at the end of the day they are just another video game system a consumer has to choose from with their limited time and money. And Nintendo had the GBC/GBA during the Playstation 1's life. In Japan, all that's been relevant as competition for the Switch since it's release in 2017 has been what little 3DS and PS4 sales were left (which was not an insignificant amount, but still).
That's fair.

And it was Pokemon time. So I think the GB was doing too well.

This is a ridiculous conspiracy theory. NPD are not "anti-Nintndo". They are not delaying their release of data to make Nintendo look bad. That is absurd.

I don't do conspiracy theories and I didn't say anything about them trying to make the Kings "look bad".

However, there is an obvious gaming media agenda trying to to make a certain something look like they're doing what they're not.

I would rather not go there. This is a thread that focuses on sales and data, not the media and biases.

Could a mod please lock this thread?

I can lock, but traditionally these kinds of threads stay open until the next set of numbers release. I’ll leave it up to you as the OP if you’d like it to still be locked.

Well this is the Week 49 thread. We're now waiting for Week 52. I usually wouldn't request a lock but I think this particular thread about Week 49 has run its course. (I probably won't request any other thread locks).
