Discussion With Super Mario RPG HD existing, is Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door remake in trouble?

I know this rumor was very flimsy anyway, only being reported on by a random on this site, and zippo (who is notoriously unreliable).
So how we feelin’ about the TTYD rumor, era? Surely the next Paper Mario game is coming in 2024. But for Switch or SwIItch?

Wouldn't the fact they're willing to fully remake RPG mean it's MORE likely they'll also remake TTYD?

The Next Paper Mario is a Peach game unfortunately. I myself enjoyed Super Princess Peach back in the day (T'was my first DS game) and 100% the game through and through several times.

Sounds like a good candidate for NERD's GCN emulator.

Could easily see that and F-Zero GX getting the SMS and Pikmin 1 & 2 treatment.

That’s not what Intelligent Systems is working on. There has almost surely been a Paper Mario in development since Origami King. They arrive every 3-5 years.

Yep, Nintendo saw all the good buzz around SMRPG and decided to scrap the TTYD remake to focus on making SMRPG2. The next Paper Mario will take after Origami King.

Didn't Nate also say a Paper Mario remake was coming?
I guess releasing two RPGs close together isn't really a problem since they're already releasing three Pikmin games within a month now.

Nate clearly beside himself, vomiting over the idea that they confused a remake of Paper Mario with a remake of Super Mario RPG

:p

I doubt a remaster/remake of PM:TTYD made by company A impacts the odds a remake of Super Mario RPG probably made by Square is happening.

Probably not. But it's going to be interesting to see if this will result in a revival of the Mario RPG alongside Paper Mario doing... whatever they feel like

Paper Mario is not a huge seller, there's never a guarantee of getting another one. IS could just as well be working on something else and leaving Paper Mario on hiatus.

There will be other remakes, even after the Switch 2 has been released, which will not only keep the schedule going, as the Wii U ports have done, but also allow us to concentrate our ambitious development efforts on the next console without abandoning the huge installed base of the current Switch.
There are tons of possible candidates, and not just on Gamecube but also on 3DS, as demonstrated by Luigi's Mansion 2.

My point is that just because we didn't get Paper Mario TTYD this time doesn't mean he'll never come.

Nate Drake said he heard a Paper Mario is being remade….that’s good enough. I doesn’t mean it has to come anytime soon

For all we know they'll pull a Pikmin and shadowdrop a TTYD port alongside the Super Mario RPG release, mirroring what they have done with Pikmin.

I mean, we still got a Paper Mario on every console, even WiiU. So I'd wager it sells "good enough"? Origami King sold around 3 million, which isn't too bad for a Mario spin off?

Eh, I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss it. Nintendo clearly mining the early 2000s for easy releases and people dismissed plenty of rumoured titles that turned out to be real just because they didn't appear at the first possible reveal window. Everybody 1-2 Switch is seeing the light of day over 18 months after it first leaked here and 12 months after it became mainstream knowledge through VGC.

I'd wait and see who's making the Peach game first. If that turns out to be EPD x Intelligent Systems, a Paper Mario remaster may well be a way of keeping that series in the limelight while giving the Paper Mario team a turn at something new. One thing this forum should have learnt from the last few months is not to be too definitive about ruling things out, given we had the June Direct with a major Nintendo title for the second half just yesterday and many people insisted that wouldn't possibly happen.

I suspect that the Peach game is the real culprit. That smells like the next Intelligent Systems game in lieu of Paper Mario

I believe the TTYD HD exists, it’s just clearly a 2024 game now.

Also, OP, where are we lol.

Yeah, if Pikmin 1+2 got shadowdropped yesterday, then I could see F-Zero being September's shadowdropped game. Probably also means WWTP coming 2024 Feb/Sept and TTYD could be dropped in June to split them up, or if WWTP are a combo pack like Pikmin (lol) then TTYD might come February

If anything it should reassure the "Nintendo will never dare to re release a good Mario RPG like that with crazy OC" crowd.
It's just not coming this year, but I wasn't expecting it this year personally.
Was expecting F-Zero GX though, hopefully it won't be too long to be announced.

Yeah, if anything, I'm hoping these two games serve to give ammo to the notion that, yes, we desire more Mario RPGs, as a whole.

It'd be nice if some of the old AlphaDream crew just went "back home" to Square Enix and could start again with Mario RPG.

Yesterday's Direct proves that Nintendo will remake and remaster anything at this point.

Pikmin 1 + 2
Luigi's Mansion 2: Dark Moon
Super Mario RPG

I still think TTYD HD is a thing, and I have no reason to think that SMRPG HD would deconfirm it. I fully believe that TTYD HD would be shadow dropped in September or will be shown in a February direct as a early 2024 game.

It's good news for TTYD HD, since it's proof that the concerns about Nintendo homogenizing the OCs were unfounded

That was always clearly the case. We had mario RPG remakes in 2017 and 2019 (very end of 2018 in some regions) that kept all the original character designs largely untouched.

It also doesn't mean anything for a new game regarding what they'd be allowed to do with characters for the same reason.

Nintendo should continue the SM RPG franchise and bring in paper mario again, rather than splitting the genre with Mario and Luigi being more RPG while Paper Mario becoming something else.

The whole reason Paper Mario existed was Square falling out with Nintendo.

It hurts the notion that it'll happen soon (like, within a year), but it's a good sign overall.

Hope TTYD HD isn’t the next Mother 3 lol

That said, there’s no hurry for TTYD HD. They can drop it during the next Direct. September or February. Maybe even July of next year, since the game was released a July

All SMRPG does is make me more confident that TTYD HD will retain the original characters with minimal alterations; when it happens of course. Doubt it shows up this year at this point; even if it were a simple Hagi port ala Pikmin and not a higher scale remaster / remake ala Metroid Prime (I believe in the latter scenario personally) I don’t think they’d shadowdrop it ahead of SMRPG.

I mean we got Pikmin 1+2 shadowdropped. To me it only means they have a handful of Game Cube remasters to release. Paper Mario The Origami King sold very well on the Switch, Nintendo is fully remaking SMRPG, Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door already having smoke and being a legacy GCN title makes it one of the most likely games to be part of the GCN remasters.

If its a remakester it might take longer to come out, if its something like the Pikmin games they could just drop TTYD whenever, they clearly didn't mind dropping them a month before 4 comes out, almost feel like virtual console updates.

I think the strategy for GameCube releases is clear. Remaster or HD glow up is preferred over a full remake, and these titles can be launched digitally on day of announcement with physical package coming 1-3 months after as to not have to delay for manufacturing/distribution timelines. I can see this continuing on for a while with their other GC titles pretty routinely. So I would say it’s safe if it’s real.

Like others, I think it will be a simple remaster that comes out next year to fill out a calendar. It won't be a remake though, in all likelihood.

I don't think it's a case that one makes makes the other mutually exclusive.

A big factor is also the question who is developing the Peach game. If IntSys is behind the Peach game I can see that a new Paper Mario for 2024 is very unlikely and an outsourced TTYD remake would make sense for a Paper Mario gap year.
