Discussion Market consolidation: where does Nintendo stand?

Nintendo is more likely to buy up developers rather than publishers. They're not really looking for IP unless it would be mission-critical to their success (ALA Monster Hunter).

Securing long-term partners like Mercury Steam and Platinum (if would they be willing to be offer platform exclusivity) should be Nintendo's top priority.

If we go by what Nintendo says and the way it acts, getting Platinum on board wouldnt be all that that weird tbh.

Nintendo does not buy studios for IPs, but people. Platinum has lots of great developers but no valuable IP.
Platinum is a long term partner and Nintendo seems to like too funding their games.
If Platinum is actively looking to sell, Nintendo could do a NLG and secure them to continue working with them.

Of course the above really depends if the management and devs are ok with such acquisition. Otherwise, I bet Nintendo will just try to get some of their head figures.
Lets not forget Yamagami loves Platinum. If Nintendo is on the race to buy them, it is probably him moving the strings on the back.

Nintendo’s concern shouldn’t be getting IP’s (and they don’t show that). As devs are being bought out you’ll have less and less partners to work with. Nintendo already has too many IP’s they don’t have time to develop. Internal growth is all that matters.

We may get to the point where Nintendo will allow Gamepass on their hardware, but that could be very far away. Because Microsoft will have so much to themselves and they’re not done.
I find this to be contentious because the only way this is even possible is for either Sony or Microsoft to acquire literally everyone, even then I am not sure if that would be true. If they are acquired by say Embracer or Tencent then they could still work with them. Indies are another avenue for Nintendo to work with.

At this point Nintendo only has a few strategies available. Internal growth and growing and/or partnering w/indies to be either exclusive or exclusive first on Nintendo’s machines. I expect Nintendo will become more aggressive in headhunting talent in JP as well.

I’ve said it before, in the doomsday scenario that all the big third party pubs are bought up, there wouldn’t be much Nintendo can do anyway except continue to expand internally and partner with indies.

But of course I find this doomsday scenario unlikely to happen anyway. Maybe Nintendo will lose a couple of key supporters. Sure. But it’s not gonna spell the end for them.

It’s why I have always said that they should also look into other avenues of the market like mobile & PC to start building ip or promoting their brand through high quality spin-off type games. For instance:
-mobile: Subspace/WoL mobile game that plays somewhat like Project X Zone
-PC: Federation Force multiplayer pve game

What about Wayforward? They’ve made games for Nintendo, they’ve made successful series that did well on Nintendo systems, they can survive without Nintendo IP - unlike HAL or IS, they’re established and generally reliable. They seem like a much more natural fit than many of the other devs listed and not just an IP purchase.

Edit: I did not realize they did that Bakugan game.

I do think they need to expand their mobile efforts, but then I look at something like Mario Kart Tour and I have to think if it actually contributes meaningfully to the performance of console Mario Kart. FE mobile is raking in dough but that's because of it being a waifu/husbando gacha thing, not sure if it also translates to more sales/mindshare for console FE.

Wayforward would be a good get, actually. They'll probably need to work with Nintendo for a while longer before Nintendo considers them, though.

Serious question tho, is Monster Hunter mission critical? I'm kind of 50/50 on that. It definitely adds a lot of value to Nintendo, but it's not like the 3DS era anymore where Monster Hunter (and the now practically defunct Yokai Watch) were selling more units per game than Pokemon. It's a very popular and important series, but I can't imagine a scenario where Nintendo would absolutely need it.

I think their strategy with mobile has always been flawed for the simple fact it was a side maneuver to get investor’s off their back.
What they should be doing is taking advantage of the platform not for promotion but just to make good games & expand the brand. As we see with the MCU for instance those who watch the movies don’t necessarily buy the comics or vice versa but it does increase the mindshare of the overall brand. To that end they should try doing something Street Pass on mobile or a Four Sword/Triforce Heroes Zelda game for mobile.

To put things in perspective, Luigi's Mansion 3 sold 3 million more copies than MH Rise and NLG cost Nintendo less than 10 million dollars.

Capcom would cost billions. Granted, they have other IP, but no... the juice is not worth the squeeze. Not even close (as much as I'd like it from a fanfiction perspective).

I get what you're saying, but in the case of Marvel for example, while the mindshare of their brand does increase, their comic sales have been awful. Which is to say that, if their mobile efforts won't significantly contribute to the sales/popularity of their console games, then I can understand why Nintendo has no interest in paying more attention to the mobile market. They're massively successful as it is, after all.

Street Pass would be amazing on mobile! I'm thinking they could also put stuff like Brain Training and Wario Ware on mobile.

I guess I’m also thinking of what company, if they were looking to be bought, would Nintendo actually stop and think about buying. And which company might decide they want to sell.

It goes without saying that not everything in the multimedia apparatus is going to feed into each other equally or even at all. So I still think they would do it but, the question would have to be how much do they want it to contribute. Though I was thinking of their diversification plans to further source the money they get from different places.

Style Saavy would be another one but there are plenty that they could do. I was thinking more spin-offy or ip that is super dead like Ice Climbers. That or new ip like Dragalia Lost.
