Embracer Group has today entered into an agreement to divest Gearbox Entertainment, for a consideration of USD 460 million (SEK 4.9 billion) to Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (“Take-Two”). The proceeds from the deal will, upon closing, significantly reduce net debt, earnout obligations and capex. Embracer retains selected companies, including Gearbox Publishing San Francisco (to be renamed), with the publishing rights to the Remnant franchise, the upcoming Hyper Light Breaker and other notable unannounced game releases.

The meteoric out-of-nowhere rise and almost immediate subsequent explosion of Embracer is gonna make a fascinating Gaming Historian video in 20 years

Anyway, this probably makes the most sense in terms of buyers. Always seemed a little weird to me that Gearbox hadn't already ended up under Take Two or 2K given how big the Borderlands franchise has been for them

This always made sense given Gearbox is best known for Borderlands and 2K have the publishing rights for the franchise, plus with the movie coming out 2K were no doubt keen to fully lock that IP up. Hopefully it brings Gearbox stability.

There's also a 'What If' timeline where Embracer did get all that Saudi money and they did end up producing games for all the IP they had hoovered up. What a timeline that would have been.

The sheer amount of stress and redundancies inflicted on staff over Embracer’s ludicrous campaign and implosion has been disgusting. On top of the industry already laying off thousands of staff. Still, I hope a solid portion of those now unembraced get back some element of stability in their professional lives without constantly wondering which new place their job will be sold to tomorrow, with or without them.

I was just wondering earlier today how many indie studios are gonna be created from these layoffs. Some of these companies seem to be laying off whole small teams worth of people at a time, and I'm sure in several of those instances the affected people kept in contact and went "wait, what if we just..."

I think I heard about it happening maybe once or twice, but I wonder if it's possibly more.

Me: Loves Borderlands.

Also me: Has, still up to this day, Borderlands 2 expansions, TPS and Borderlands 3 in the backlog.

I think this is for the best. I've got a lot of strong feelings about modern Gearbox and their output (most of them negative) but at least they're given security with Take-Two instead of the constant fear with Embracer.

Be sure to dive in. The expansions for 2 and Pre-Sequel are all excellent, and 3 has probably the best gameplay in the series despite the horrendous story. If they can course correct on the story while building on the excellent gameplay for the inevitable fourth game we're in for a treat when it comes.

This is probably the best possible outcome for Gearbox.

And a reminder I should get back to that franchise at some point.

Yep, I know they're pretty good. It's just.. that the proper mood never quite comes, you know? I hate it.

I can only find an article from a banned source but it looks like Gearbox is being hit with layoffs today.
